Favorite Band that no one has heard of!

Postby aetherson » Thu Oct 18, 2007 4:32 am UTC

While there are similar threads on the fori....

So, I was recently driving through a city that I don't normally go to and was listening to the radio (as you do). I was shocked to NOT hear some of the bands that were being played on local radio stations in my home town.

So, post about your favorite band that isn't on main stream radio or video or that just hasn't QUITE made it big. But you think they should.

the intention of this thread is not to just plug your JHS bff's sototallykickassandtalented garage band.
I want to see stuff that is truly, jaw droppingly, grab you by the base-of-tha-skull and make you listen, good. But, no one else has any idea who they are.

For instance:
Ghostland Observatory: saw them at Austin City Limits a couple of weeks back. Duo made up of an androgionously sexually appealing (makes the entire crowd want to slither with him) vocalist (not unlike David Bowie back in the day) and a very talented, Fat-Elvis Cape Wearing keyboardist/ percusionist.

Ok so some of you may have heard of them...but you get the gist of it. Right?

Now let me know what you think my little monkeys.

Is that Loveless?

<edit> Yes, I do believe that it is. Anyone with an ounce of musical interest will be aware of Kevin Shields et al. </edit>

Flower Travellin' Band and especially their album Satori. They're fairly well-known in certain circles, according to Wikipedia, but deserve much more attention. AMG says:

Flower Travelling Band was Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin meeting Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath at the Ash Ra Temple. Simply put, they played grand, spacey, tripped-out hard rock with a riffy base that was only two steps removed from the blues, but their manner of interpreting those steps came from an acid trip. Flower Travelling Band was an entity unto itself.

I could list off just about any roots reggae band, but how about Archie Bell and the Drells? Some of you would probably recognize maybe one of their songs, but the band? When I grow up, I want to be a Drell. It sounds like something from a Sid and Marty Krofft show.

I much prefer finding obscure music by well-known bands. The other day, a friend was commenting on how anti-populist my music tastes were.

"So yeah, you like the Beatles, but you had to pick the song nobody has ever heard of to be your favorite."

At which point I started drunkenly screaming YOU KNOW MY NAME, LOOK UP THE NUMBER while my scouser friend started twirling about and chanting NUMBER 9 NUMBER 9 NUMBER 9.

Silversun Pickups - they toured this year with Snow Patrol, yet still suprising numbers of people have no idea who they are. They are awesome, that is what they are.

Red Riders- An aussie band which also toured with Snow Patrol this year. Wasn't overly fussed on them when I saw them live, but their album has come to grow on me.

Pink Hearse.

http://www.myspace.com/itspinkhearse They're an absolutely fantasic little horrorpunk band that I've seen perform in a tiny pub with eight people in the crowd and that have opened for Bella Morte in front of about a hundred people but no matter what and no matter how many there are in the audience, these girls put on a show and play the kind ofmusic that is guaranteed to get me dancing like a loon.

Pretty much all of the music I love is totally unknown round here. ):

Fionn Regan - Gorgeous acoustic artist from all of ten minutes from my house. Saw him live over the summer and I fell in love. Some of his songs have been on ads (thinking specifically of "Be Good Or Be Gone" on the Toyota ad) I urge you to listen to his stuff.
Guillemots - Avant Garde pop/indie group from England. I actually think they're quite famous elsewhere, but here they're virtually non-existant. They've got a really experimental sound going for them (playing guitar with a drill, using a tray as a percussion instrument) and the most important thing you need to know: their frontman's actual name is Fyfe Dangerfield.
Xiu Xiu - (pronounced shoo shoo) Hard to describe Xiu Xiu, but all I can say is they're really weird but fantastic.
Onoff - I've known about these guys for years and they're fantastic. They've got a v. Dead Kennedys-esque singer and their music is described as "Punk / Pop Punk / Ska".

And other good bands you should definitely check out if you're bored and in need of new music:
Minus The Bear
The Microphones/Mount Eerie (listen to The Moon, it's beautiful)
Let's Go Sailing
Kate Havnevik
The Bad Plus

Ok, they're not all bands, and they're probably well known everywhere else, but I'm bored and I felt like posting some music. Oh, and I'm sorry about all the Myspace links, but the player there tends to be better than the ones on the official site...

It kind of looks like my music taste is pretty mainstream. Maria Mena maybe? Amazing voice and very real lyrics. She's well-known in Norway but I don't think she is anywhere else.

Yay! They are seriously awesome. I bought the album RIGHT AWAY when it came out in July. I think the 10, or else it was the 31. Bad Religion was the other one that released right around then. Hmm.

Astonishing.

To continue my list of genres:
Post-hardcore: Alesana
Punk: Strike Anywhere
Psychobilly: Horrorpops
Emo-core: The Promise Ring
Art rock: Help She Can't Swim
Math rock: Fall of Troy
Melodic hardcore: Death By Stereo and Rise Against (RA is pretty popular, but they are my favourite band.)
Metalcore: It Dies Today and Ion Dissonance
Indie folk: Ingrid Michaelson (I am going to keep advocating her music until someone listens to me.)
Screamo: Daitro (This is French, but it is AMAZING.)

I could, um, keep going, but this list is getting pretty long.

(Yes. I am a genre whore.)

ETA a few bands.

Another plus for you... I already knew her, her stuff's been on Grey's Anatomy a few times and I'm slightly obsessed with their music, so I download every song (literally) that they play in the show. My friend also just saw her in concert, opening for Matt Nathanson.

My next recommendation is William Joseph. He's a pianist, and his is the only straight piano I ever listen to. His cover of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" is amazing, no joke. I may upload it for y'all tonight.

I was going to go see her a month or so ago in Chicago, but it was an 18+ show and none of my 18+ friends wanted to go. :(
But, yeah. I ran into her last November or maybe before then on MySpace. Fell in love with her music immediately. :)
