Favorite Band that no one has heard of!

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Yea, I guess their lyrics are too weird for the general public. I love them though and going to go see them soon.

No, but I'll definitely check it out once I get the chance. "Shut Up I Am Dreaming" is a recent favorite of mine.

Oh you certainly should, then. They're a tad more aggressive than Wolf Parade or Sunset Rubdown, but the album, Beast Moans, should certainly be in your collection.

Floater - been around for quite a while...unique sounding, and a little all over the map.
Pigboat - how can you not like a band with a song called "Johnny Cash Rides His Coal Car Through Purgatory"?

Okay, Menomena's already been mentioned on a very similar thread here (by Jauss) but they are so wonderful I must re-mention them.

Menomena is a local (Oregon) band and they do lovely pop/rock/indie/electronica stuff. Because liza's very poor at labelling music. Check out Wet and Rusting - I could listen to that song over and over. Muscle'N Flo and Rotten Hell are worth your time too.

(Arrives at thread) Hey! Lots of bands I've never heard of! Neat!

I should mention Dino Dimuro here, and not only because I have so many of his songs on my site (with his permission.)

Y'see, he's sort of the Marcel Proust of the home-taping scene. He's done several dozen albums, and they all document his life. At first listen to him in his heyday, he sounds a lot like Frank Zappa (and I think that's a good thing.) More recently, he's been a lot more mainstream-ish rock.

If you can get your hands on his Gower Street and Vermont Avenue pair, do. They document the LA riots that were happening around him.

(And if you turn up your nose when you see he did a song Terri Schiavo, know this: At the time that was going on, his wife was also in a coma.)

I feel really embarassed that I haven't recognized a lot of these groups. But then again, I'm mostly a prog fan, so I don't know much obscurity outside of that. But hey, other people like 65daysofstatic, woohoo!

But if we're going to be literal, I can't really give one that nobody has heard of, because almost everything I have I found out about from someone else on the internet. But then again, there's people saying My Bloody Valentine, Black Flag, and Joy Division, so maybe I shouldn't worry about that. Come on guys, anything that's on a major label or founded its own label or is drooled on by critics shouldn't be names. So whatever, here's a few, and I will be very impressed if someone knows all of them:
Taal
Sleepytime Gorrila Museum
Ahvak
The Paper Chase
DAAU
Not including Myrbein and Diablo Swing Orchestra because I haven't heard enough of them.

Some Australians may have heard of them but most people outside of Australia will not have. Therefore I submit Karnivool, an Australian Alt-Metal Band

Mirthkon - avant garde heavy metal band with a brass section
http://www.myspace.com/mirthkon

Gentle Giant - multi instrumentalist 1970's prog rock, very bearded

Gentle Giant are a second tier prog band. They never made it as big as KC, Yes, etc., but they're as close as you can get to being popular without being one of the big seven or a popular prog metal band. I know SGM are a fairly big avant group, but still ;-)

That other stuff is cool though. But that guy can't outdo Fred Frith. :P

One thing Gentle Giant could much better than King Crimson was vocal arrangements. Try GG's knots (yeah, from the R.D.Laing) versus KC's Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With, and I think GG comes out on top. Also, theirs predates the other by 25 years or so.

But then, you can tell from their band names that they had different missions in life.

(Edited to add: Fans of Fred Frith's solo stuff should Google for Hans Tammen. He had me at the words "Endangered Guitar.")

Well I wasn't making any comparisons of quality, although I'm not much of a fan of either, I was just pointing out that almost everyone who is into prog at all knows about GG. Tammen sounds cool. But you just can't top Fred. ;-)

Mott the Hoople.
Few people knew of them when they were around back in the 70s, and even fewer now. They did have a bit of success when David Bowie produced one of their albums and gave them a song. However, if you ask someone about that song, "All the Young Dudes", these days, people will say they thought it was performed by David Bowie, when, in actuallity, he just wrote it and provided backup singing. The band really is hard to classify and can only be said just to play rock music. Sometimes it was rock and roll, sometimes glam, sometimes metal, sometimes proto-punk (all the way back in '71), sometimes it was operatic rock (a year before Queen released Bohemian Rhapsody, Mott the Hoople wrote a 4 minute rock opera called Marrionette. Queen was the opening act for the tour for that album)

Then once again I'll advise you look into Beast Moans by Swan Lake...another band with Mr Spencer Krug.

For music snobism try experimental non-melodic jazz i'd say...

I'm currently again into 'Anima Sound System', a rather mainstream Hungarian band (sounds somewhere between 'The Herbaliser' and le peuple de l'herbe).
Not snobby at all, because Hungary just ain't, ...right?

No, I'm in the USA. I'm a fan of progarchives.com, and Taal is a moderately popular unknown band there (they're in print again, woohoo! Except Mister Green is still OOP and I don't want to buy it on iTunes :( ), and I heard of DAAU through the avant guys that I hang out with on that forum. They were just recently added to PA, so they came up in the avant megathread, and I downloaded them from emusic.

I might be being a music snob too, but I'm pretty sure that it's because they're fairly popular.

Shaimus...yeah, people who play guitar hero know this band. But there are way more music lovers who don't. I just really can't think of others.
