Songs From the 80s!?!?!

Note to Mods: I was considering posting this in Music, but I would rather have the General population be able to see it and respond to the survey question. By Saturday, it can be moved to Music if it spurns enough conversation....

So my close friends have a band. In fact, this is a band made up of some very talented college-level musicians, who, for the fun of it, are playing the cheesiest songs from the 80s. They have a full horn section, and at their last show they closed with "Take on Me." So why this survey? They won a battle of the bands at my college and will have the opportunity to open for a national act at our annual ValleyFest music festival. They asked a bunch of us to find out what people's favorite ridiculous songs were.

tl;dr--What is your favorite ridiculously cheesy (or not) song from the 1980s?

Thanks for the help!

Dexy's Midnight Runners- Come on Eileen. DEFINITELY. At my school's Battle of the Bands they had a ska band play that and it was amazing. Everyone loved it.

I, I just died in your arms tonight. Don't you love me, baby? Don't you love me, Whooooooaaaa! Last night a DJ saved my life. Last night a DJ saved my life from a broken heart. I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had. Take on me, take me on, I'll be gone in a day or two. At Club Tropicana, drinks are free. Relax, don't do it, when you want to go through it. How does it feel to treat me like you do? Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand. In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep, through the valley of fear. Hast du etwas zeit fuer mich, dann singe ich ein lied fuer dich, Von 99 luftballons auf ihrem weg zum horizont.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to rock down to Electric Avenue, in Brixton, and henceforth "take it higher".

OOH!! OOH!! China In Your Hand by T'Pau!

Other ones you need to do:
Boys of Summer, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Angel of Harlem, Caravan of Love, Happy Hour, Sledgehammer, One Vision, Mr Brownstone, Paradise City, Money For Nothing, Birthday, Handle With Care, Alison, Oliver's Army, The Mission Soundtrack (all of it), Brass in Pocket, Runnin' Down A Dream.

Or not. Do whatever you like. I don't care.

Humph.

I don't know if it is my favorite, but 'Nice Age' by the Yellow Magic Orchestra is a pretty solid '80s pop tune.

"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" It's no good without the cheezy synth line, though. And how can no one have mentioned THE SAFETY DANCE?!

Well spotted. This was solely because I refuse to acknowledge Uptown Girl's right to exist.

Poison's 'Unskinny Bop' just has to be in here somewhere, too.

Also, Life Goes On. I'm no metal fan, certainly no '80s hair-metal fan, but Flesh & Blood was one very decent album in that genre. The awesomeness that is the solo on this last song cannot be matched.

What song is that supposed to be?

And of course you have to know what started it all.

I was driving my Chrysler down the Atlanta Highway to the Love Shack when I spotted a woman on the side of the road. I said to her "get out of my dreams and into my car." We drove for a good bit. She said she was an uptown girl. I asked her if she'd like to spend one night in Bangkok with me for a chess tournament. She agreed that it would be another day in paradise.

As we were driving, we noticed a forest fire on St. Elmo's Mountain. I asked a couple of boys who were moonwalking away from it, and they both said "we didn't start the fire." They admitted they tried to fight it.

We finally got to the Love Shack with the tin roof. It was rusted. We sat down at the table with everyone else who was there. Billie Jean was the hostess. She claims the child is mine, but I know he's not my son. She served us rock lobster. I noticed a large pot of Jamaican Jerk Chicken on the left side of the table. I asked someone to pass the kutchie to me. After dinner we decided to dance the night away. Billie Jean then asked if someone would like to walk the dinosaur. Turned out she called her dog, who appeared to be hungry like a wolf, Dino. Sherry, my girlfriend, volunteered.

When Sherry got back with Dino, we had dessert. Billie Jean wanted to serve lemon meringue, but she didn't know how to get it light and fluffy. I told her you have to whip it, and whip it good. We ended up with candy, which is what everybody wanted.

After that night Sherry and I broke up. She drove me crazy.

I'm trying to picture/imagine 'Thriller' done with the horns :)
I want to say 'Fading like a flower', but that was 1990 (maybe 92?). But something by Roxette, perhaps "How do you do!" or "Joyride"?

If you want to do something really cool, try both parts of "Dancin'" (which combines a band stand and 80s rock n roll) from the Xanadu soundtrack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eEOFvBdD2k (The song starts at 1:48 if you want to skip the dialog - if you get a bit bored with the style, skip forward to just before 6:00).

IMHO the creepiest is Every breath you take.

The funniest is Weird Al's Eat it.

The one I want out of my head right now is Karma Chameleon.

It isn't even fair to bring that up. This is about the best cheesy songs of the eighties, not about songs that defy human comprehension. You're talking about a song that instantly makes anyone, in any situation, totally badass.

YOU'RE AT YOUR BEST WHEN THE GOING GETS ROUGH!
YOU'VE BEEN PUT TO THE TEST
BUT IT'S NEVER ENOUGH!
YOU'VE GOT THE TOUCH!
YOU'VE GOT THE POWER!
WHEN ALL HELL'S BREAKING LOOSE
YOU'LL BE RIDING THE EYE OF THE STORM!

...that song is going to be stuck in my head for the next few days...

Several definitive audible moments in the 1980s:

I'm a-livin' in a box. I'm a-livin' in a card-board box. Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake a tree. Lay a whisper on my pillow, leave the winter on the ground. Hush, hush keep it down now, voices carry. Shout, shout, let it all out: these are the things I was talking about, c'mon! We are living in a material world, and I am a material girl. VIDEO killed the RADIO STAR. She told me to walk this way, she told me to talk this way. I travelled the world and the seven seas: everybody's looking for something. Lenny Bruce is not afraid, Red, red wine. Stay close to me. If you're lost and you look - you will find me, time after time. I got my first real sixth string--bought it at the five and dime. Sometimes I feel I've got to (clap, clap) run away, I've got to (stomp, stomp) get away. We gotta move these refrigerators, we gotta move these colour TeeVeeeeeees. You spin me right round baby right round, like a record baby right round. Any way you want it that's the way you need it any way you want it (air-guitar riff) It's a nice day for a white wedding. My name is Luca, I live on the second floor. You could have a steam train, if you'd just lay down your tracks. It's as big as a whale and it's about to set sail.

By order of the prophet, we ban that boogie sound.

wow really? that makes the 90s music scene slightly worse than before... it's wikipedia though, someone could say The Who is an emo band that started playing in 2023.

also, in the vein of the B-52's

Juicy jungle gonna disappear, juicy jungle gonna disappear
you got an axe to grind don't grind it here
cause juicy jungle's getting smaller--year after year!
