Need some acoustic guitar songs

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Need some acoustic guitar songs

Postby Cathode Ray Sunshine » Sun Feb 01, 2009 6:08 am UTC

So, I've decided to pick up the acoustic guitar (and by that I mean that I'm finally going to put it to use after years of just laying there) and it reminded me of some songs that I really love that I'd really like to learn. Even if I'm not going to learn right away, I thought maybe some of you could recommend me songs simmilar to the ones I like. I'll list some :

Morbid Angel - Desolate Ways
Dark Tranquillity - The Mind's Eye
At The Gates - And the World Returned
At The Gates - Into The Dead Sky

Those are the few I can think right now. Sorry I can't provide audio samples at the moment. But those are the types of songs I'm looking for; sad, gloomy. I can't really express how those songs make me feel, there's just something to them. I also got hold of this program called Power Tab that I think will help me a great deal. Hope you can recommend me some good tunes.

I haven't listened to those songs before, but I'll see what I can do.

Just because a guitar is acoustic doesn't mean you should only play chords and such, you can play any song you can play on an electric on an acoustic, as long as there are enough frets (most acoustics only have 20 or 21, while electrics usually have up to 24). But since you're just looking specifically for acoustic songs, and I'm sure you already knew that, there are a few sad songs that use acoustic guitar that I can think of right now. (I'm too lazy to check my music collection.) American Pie is a classic, although it isn't too depressing, and it's all chords, it's still a good song to learn. The other few songs are from Arcade Fire's second album, because even though there's a lot of instrumentation in those songs, there's a lot of acoustic guitar in most of the songs. They use capos and (I think) alternate tunings in a lot of the songs, so you might want to get a capo if you want the guitar to sound exactly like the recording.
Hiya, I'm Kanavazk.

New Model Army- Caslen is what I first thought of when I listened to Desolate Ways, you'd have to work the tab out yourself though!
Is this a wok that you've shoved down my throat, or are you just pleased to see me?

Once you've gotten going I'd suggest some John Butler Trio.... not good to learn on though

The first few songs I learned on acoustic guitar were: Wish You Were Here, Norwegian Wood, and Folsom Prison Blues.

Any Bright Eyes. If you want to go the whole nine yards, you can cry while doing it. :P
Also, The Avett Brothers. It's fun to sing along with your playing, if that's your thing.

If you are interested in fingerpicking, there is some awesome stuff out there. Try "A Tender History in Rust" by Do Make Say Think. It's tuned strangely, but it is a super-fun song to play, and sounds great.

One last suggestion: The General by Dispatch.

The first acoustic song I ever learned was REM: Everybody Hurts. Dead easy to start on.

Try searching for Manuel de Falla, he does some good modern Spanish guitar music, you might like,
