VIKING METAL

VIKING METAL

Postby UNC_Metalhead » Sat Feb 28, 2009 2:50 pm UTC

Anyone? Anyone at all? :D

It's hard to remember the names of bands I've heard before, but one decent example is Hammer Horde

I'm not sure; I'm much more of a fan of pirate metal.
But if anyone were ever to discover the meaning of life, all of space and time would collapse in on itself, and in the place that remained a large sign would appear saying:

Level 2.

I listen to Bathory and Amon Amarth from time to time. Good stuff.

I used to listen to the occasional Ensiferum and such, but the lyrics just get soooo hilariously cheesy that I can't listen to it without chuckling a bit.

Hell yes I love me some viking metal. And don't bag on the lyrics, most death metal lyrics are just as bad if not worse. :D
I tend to lump viking and folk together though, as there is really almost no difference, except for being on the heavier end of folk metal and the imagery/lyrics. You have to take all that genre stuff with a grain of salt anyways though, as there are bands like Amon Amarth, that have the whole viking image, but musically are much more similar to death metal.

My favorites are Ensiferum, Amon Amarth, Forefather, Bathory, Einherjer, Equilibrium, Fintroll, Heidevolk, Wolfchant, Moonsorrow, and Thyrfing.

Yeah their not bad at all. Great when their not channeling mid-period In Flames. When they are....

I also forgot about Turisas. Good stuff.

Looking over this has given me some thoughts as well.

Black metal. Anyone know some exceptional bands out there?

I mean you of course have Dimmu Borgir. And one that I also love is Chthonic.

Stop making up subgenres of metal. There's already too damned many of them as it is.

I love Vikings! And Viking Metal! I'm not sure if Amon Amarth is viking metal or death with viking themes anymore, but they are one of my favourite bands. I wouldn't say Eluveitie is viking metal though...

And then I go and reread novax6's post and I think "Oh, that's the same things I was just going to say, never mind then."

Except I don't lump folk/viking together.

see again, they have that whole viking theme, but musically definitely progressive metal. Tons of time changes, complex song structures, etc.

I love viking/folk metal. Probably my favorite band right now is Myrkgrav. You can download a torrent of one of their albums HERE. I highly recommend any fan of folk/viking metal to check it out.
