Singers Who Change Sex When You Vary the Pitch

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Singers Who Change Sex When You Vary the Pitch

Postby Clumpy » Fri Mar 13, 2009 4:37 am UTC

I was messing around in Acid Pro a couple of days back and found a song whose vocalist appears to change their sex when you shift the pitch three semitones (any more or less and it doesn't sound good at all). Check it out. I actually like the "female" version better than the original.

Do any of you have any other examples of this sort of thing?

Huh. I don't have any examples (I think I first heard Massive Attack's "Angel" at the wrong pitch and mistook the gender for that reason, but I could tell it sounded unnatural), but that song does work out pretty well.

You might also be interested in pitch shifting tools which allow you to control the so-called "formant" shifting independently of pitch. That can be a handy or even vital aid when raising or lowering vocals, especially to achieve an opposite-gendered effect. Might not work out as well when dealing with a full mix, though.

I was playing with down pitching Katie Perry's "i kissed a girl" on Monday to make her sound like bloke singing.
(stupid idea i know, but the best canidate some for it ever).

From memery i pitched her down 5. but added additonal down picthced tracks at 10 and 20 to the far left and right to fill out the sound.

Also speed the track up to shorten it and give it a more dancey pace (now my 3 year old daughter loves it)

I'll upload if anyone is at all interested...

I don't have any sound examples, but I saw a program on tv where they pitched Kylie Minogue's voice down and she sounded just like Rick Astley, and vice versa.

Fucking hell, the slowed down Kylie song is unbelievable. It's totally 100% Astley sounding.

Plus, her song was written and produced by the same trio who did "Never Gonna Give You Up," so the music is similar, too.

agree. that is funny, shame it doen't really work the other way - but then the pitching onthe vid is a few tones short. Might have to true pitch shifting without speeding the track up (one of the reason i think it fails as rick> to kyle)

THIS MAN...
I don't know what to say. He's pretty talented with his falsettos though, but he's hard to take seriously.

Whoa, that's the same guy that got Internets-famous for singing both parts of "A Whole New World."

It is confirmed that Bruce Dickinson changes into Bruce Dickinson singing higher notes if you change the pitch.
