Massive Attack - LP5

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Massive Attack - LP5

Postby 6453893 » Mon Jun 29, 2009 8:25 am UTC

I choose to believe the new Massive Attack album will be released some time this year. I know it's been promised since like 2006, but I trust them when they say this time, for real, it is coming out. What should we expect from the album? Is it going to be the biggest let down since Chinese Democracy? I'd like to be optimistic, but I don't see how this album could live up to expectations.

Could you change the title of this thread? It's a bit misleading for Autechre fans.

LP5 =

Hehe, you read my mind! I kept getting a bit confused with the title.

(though, well, we gotta admit that "LP5" is not an official title to that album, but neither is it an official title to Massive Attack's upcoming (?) album, but, eh...)

I know it's confusing. But come on, they named an album Untilted. They deserve it.

LP5 is the current working title of the album. Weather Underground was used for a long time, and may be the final title. But at this very moment they are referring to it as LP5.

It is, by the way, a double album. Double albums generally make me nervous.

Damn, there goes my chance of making a joke about the Autechre album :(

As for Massive Attack, Blue Line and Mezzanine are both terrific (and Protection wasn't far off) but 100th Window was a massive let down, albeit it was essentially a 3D solo album. And double albums don't worry me, but a gap of more than 4-5 years between albums does (even if Portishead did stomp all over that rule quite well last year).

At this rate it'll be almost as bad as the second Avalanches album for long-awaited albums in recent years that never seem to see the light of day.

100th Window has it tough because it came after Mezzanine. It was a good solid album with some killer tracks. It was just way, way too long and self-indulgent and devoid of hooks. Of course, if we look at their career so far...:

Blue Lines - Protection - Mezzanine - 100th Window - _______

They are kind of set up to have a third coming. Just like Portishead's Third coming.

I actually rate 100th Window very, very highly. The processing and synth programming are matchless, delicate intricacies that are far beyond t=anything on the previous albums. Possibly it's a production nerd's album, but I think not. Everywhen, for instance is an absolutely gorgeous song. If it is a double album, that might be because Del Naja and Marshall are rumoured to be working in separate studios on different material that they will ultimately combine. That might make for a huge number of tracks to sequence. I'm excited about the new album, but I'm patient. Massive Attack are one of the few groups I'd trust to be honing and perfecting their work, rather than procrastinating because it's poor quality.

And LP5 is confusing, yes.

They have already played more than twenty new songs live.

I have to say, I'm looking forward to this album. My brother introduced me to them with Mezzanine, and since then I've been tracking down as much of their stuff as I can.
