I'm gonna throw Big Big Train out there. Not sure if maybe people from the UK have heard of them, but I think they're pretty damn obscure in these parts...

EDIT: this is just brilliant.

Here's a little band I quickly became obsessed with... rather unknown, kinda weird, these fellas use percussions in a quite unique way to create some pretty original music, which I totally dig :P

I don't know how well known this band is outside Australia but Karnivool are awesome! So are birds of Tokyo for that matter but I believe they are more widely known

I was just about to post the same band. They're great. I understand they're fairly well known Down Under, but no one where I live has ever heard of them. Check out this video if you haven't heard them yet: All I Know

Here's another one: Long Distance Calling. They're a German post-metal band that I've been digging lately. Most of their stuff is instrumental, minus the songs with guest vocalists. Here's the song that got me hooked: Black Paper Planes

I like your taste in music. I haven't heard of Etron Fou Leloublan and I'm going to check it out after this post. Early in the thread someone mentioned "Behold... The Arctopus", which is another great..."horror music" band.

I don't really know what's popular, so I'll just post a few that might be obscure. If YOU haven't heard of it, it IS obscure. Am I right?

Computer/Horror music
Venetian Snares

Rock music that actually has composition/movements/dynamics!
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum

These guys are probably big in Europe. I've never met anyone that listens to them.
Alamaailman Vasarat

Abel Ganz, their progressive rock song So Far is 23 minutes long. It has Celtic flute, Spanish guitar, synth solos, hard rock, classical, and probably more styles in that song.

I've heard of them! They're very good--definitely one of the better new psychedelic acts I've heard in the last year or two.

Also, for y'all to check out, Jeff Pianki is a decently talent indie folk singer/songwriter/guitar-player person. I don't know if he has an album out, but he's pretty good.

The Blue Van
I like their first album best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qLtwpyF-lw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USkV6d4VYLU
...but pretty much the only stuff of theirs people are starting to hear is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExOGqEEW-DU
I love them, but the stuff they did before being used on every other commercial on tv is better music. Just my opinion.

Keep in mind that bands can be obscure in some countrys while they're not in others.
I have some friends who thought nobody's heard of Primus. And that's true in my country.

I am a massive fan of Lo-Ball, Pauley Perrett's (Abby in NCIS) old band. All-girl rock bands may not have the best success rate, but these guys were awesome, I have as many of their songs as I could find on the interwebs.

YMMV, they're a local Baltimore band I've come to enjoy. Crazy progressive rock/metal up ahead!

Though when hunting down their albums, it doesn't help that there are 3 or 4 different bands with the name "Wayward" or "The Wayward," heh.

Has anyone listened to Depapepe? They're two Japanese acoustic guitarists.

I checked out Depapepe's Summer Parade, and it's pretty good -- There aren't enough "happy" guitar songs, IMO. Even the ones played in major end up being played with the Four Chords and having pointless lyrics anyways.

They're skilled, and their music is fresh and very entertaining, if not terribly memorable. Overall I'd give them an 8/10, they bring something new to modern guitar music.

[ME] from Melbourne awesome mix of mix of soaring vocals and melodic/symphonic metal. Could be described as a mix of queen and muse. They're still pretty unknown at the moment so gigs are real cheap and they even better live. They even did a free show at uni at the start of this year :)

Hey peoples

Not sure if anyone has already listed this band yet, but INDUKTI are an awesome band that are rather unheard of. They are a Polish band with 2 albums. S.U.S.A.R and Idmen. I prefer their later album Idmen (2009). Very Tool souding but also very unique with violins and a somewhat ethnic/world music sound in parts.

Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbrU2aJwplE

Also SNOT is a great band which I think are very much a forgotten band of the late 90's funk/rock/metal era. Such a shame the singer died after their first album.

On a lighter note Mike Pattons side project LOVAGE is really cool. I dont know too many people who are aware of it.

Les Claypools side project SAUSAGE is wicked as well.

I know everyone has probably heard of THE AVALANCHES but their first EP El Producto (quite rare) is definitely worth a listen if you can get your hands on it.

CLOSURE IN MOSCOW is one of my faves at the moment.

CHEVELLE is another awesome band who arent overly famous

And for anyone whose into JAZZ/FUSION I stumbled onto an old vinyl from a 70's band called BRAND X. Very technical and great sounding and believe it or not Phil Collins played drums with them before he started Genesis!!

My artist of the moment is Gold Motel. They're very upbeat and it makes me happy. Also check out The Hush Sound, a previous project of theirs. I'm new to both, but I'm enjoying them.

Two bands from the 60s/early 70s...
Cold Sun.

Yellowstone and Voice

More mainstream but still relatively obscure are the bands Love and The Pretty Things

I'm gonna use this space to plug an acquaintance's music. We went to high school in the same town and I'd see her around all the time. I'm kind of in love with the music. All she's got up on Youtube right now are cover songs, but they're worth a listen. She'll be releasing an album of all-original music very soon. Anyway, here are a couple of my favorites:
Poison
Good Morning Heartache

I'm sure people have heard of them, but I haven't seen Dokken posted anywhere on this forum, aside from a mention of Without Warning, which is a bad ass instrumental. They went platinum so probably doesn't fit, but one I'm pretty sure nobody's heard of: Pink Cream 69. Hair metal also, only 2 really cool songs: Signs of Danger and One Step Into Paradise. The singer (Andi Deris) went on to join Helloween.

Irish Coffee. It's a really awesome rock/hard rock band from the 70s (that recorded a record in 2004 as well), but it seems to be almost completely unknown outside of Belgium. Sadly, they have only recorded two albums.

Here Come the Mummies are a bunch of studio musicians who decided to form a funk band. They play in mummy getup (supposedly because to appear in person could breach contracts of theirs), have hilarious lyrics, and are incredibly tight.

Lions Lions, just found out about them yesterday (opened for a band I'm in love with). Awesome band from Boston

House VS Hurricane and Dream On, Dreamer are both bands from Australia that seem to be kind of big down there, but no one around here has heard of them (even those in the scene)...

Emery, very under the radar post-hardcore band

Bat on Fire, pretty big in the Detroit area, but no one knows who the hell they are anywhere else...

LightsGoBlue. Great little electro-pop-punk Duo from Kent, UK (no idea where that is xD). Very very good. Pick THIS ONE to look up!
