They're still well-known in Australia, even though they split up and the band members are all involved in other bands now (best known is Pinky Peecroft and the White Russians). I didn't think they got very much exposure overseas at all! Most of their exposing was done here.

Yes, the guy from AFI and that other guy from AFI. Davey Havok and Jade Puget. :)

OBSCURITY = AWESOME.
totally.

Everyone needs to know about these bands:

Gideon Conn.
He is the MAN. Nice and catchy folky hip-hop, and he has this hilarious endearingly naive on-stage persona. Its hard to explain how awesome he actually is.

Alestorm
FUCKING PIRATE METAL!! I can't say much more than that. Oh, yeah I can: the lead singer wields a keytar. Fuckyeah.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip
This band is fairly "obscure", though they have been in the UK charts. Really clever and insightful lyrics meets great beats.

Munchbreak
Hip-hop that's FUNKY TO THE MAX. Incredible live, with full funky brass instrumentation, dual MCs and a turntable.

Sorry about the myspace links, but these bands don't have much more than myspace pages unfortunately.

The Southland - So obscure that they don't have youtube videos (at least that I could find). Some may know them from Scrubs, in which one of their songs was featured in an episode in Season 5. If you were wondering, it's the song Shadow which is on their myspace. Listen to it, its good.
Count Zero - Some Guitar Hero/Rock Band players may know them, but other than that, they are really obscure, but very good. They have a bunch of free mp3 downloads on their site
I'll probably come back and post some more later

Wow, good stuff.

I suppose I should be plugging my band here.
The Allusionists
We actually started recording like, last week, so we'll be adding songs soon. It doesn't help that most of our songs have 34345634 parts and there's only two people recording.

Greatest band of all time. I've seen them ten times. (I also did the Monkey Man video, if you've ever looked them up on youtube...)

They just canceled a bunch of shows they were supposed to play opening for Lou Reed, which would have been really insane. Too bad...

Pretty much ditto.. within several seconds of looking at their myspace I realised that they were playing in my town in a couple of weeks, so I went to see them and bought their album. Fucking genius, it is.

Oh, and Melt Banana are proper weird. I have one of their albums somewhere. What. The. Fuck. :D

Their early stuff is really insane, experimental noise. The last few releases (Cell-scape, Bambi's Dilemma) have more coherent songs, though it's still very far out there.

But they really must be experienced live.

The one I have (had?) is Scratch or Stitch, back from the mid-90's. Might check out their newer stuff to see if they've progressed much. Oh, another similar Japanese band that I like, which is possibly fairly obscure depending on who you ask: Boredoms. (I say similar... they're nowhere near as, erm, screetchy, and recent albums are a lot more "psychadelic". But they're both Japanese?)

Try "Cell-scape" for some drasticly different Melt-Banana.

I think there was a period in the 90s when Melt-Banana were Boredom's standard opening band. Definately a connection there, anyways (aside from the Tokyo / Osaka scene difference).

I like the Boredoms' influence & side projects more than I like their actual music. Side project OOIOO in particular, is killer. (I live in Providence, and pretty much the entire underground music scene here can be traced back to the Boredoms.)

A recent band that's getting a bit into Melt-Banana's territory is "Limited Express (has gone?)". They're like a garage rock version of MxBx.

Also "Afrirampo".

I'd like to recommend Dan Potthast. He is the lead singer for MU330 and The Stitch-Up, but his solo stuff is also really great. He is one of the most energetic solo performers I've seen, and is just a blast to watch. Plus, I talked to him after a show and he's a really down to earth and nice guy.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=BdCvND9VKy4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fl3Aof6K9w&NR=1

Those videos are good, but they don't really do him justice. His cds are good, but I strongly recommend trying to see him live. He's touring with Zox and Streetlight Manifesto right now, and it was just an amazing show in general.

Django is not obscure! and while he did have restricted finger movement, he could use that 3rd finger... But, still, a very excellent musician. Have you checked out Bireli Lagrene?

Mark Allen Berube. Intelligent music.

Lyrics for "Grandma Gave Me the Finger Today" (which is also my ring tone!)
I was skipping down the street
Humming rhapsody and blue
I had two weeks paid vacation
And not much else to do
It was a lovely sunny day
And I had not a care at all
So I thought of dear of old grandma
And decided to pay a call

I made a hasty pit stop at Juanitos taco stand
I got two bean burritos
One for me and one for Grand
I skipped up Maple Street
And rang the doorbell at her place
Then grandma stuck her middle finger right into my face

Oh, grandma gave me the finger today
She flipped me off much to my consternation and dismay
There nothing I could do and even less that I could say
Cause Grandma gave me the finger today

I was nearly catatonic
I could not believe my eyes
When she took the two burritos
And said what a nice surprise!
She got the Tomotio salsa
You can get at Taco Bell
Then she ate her bean burrito
And then she ate mine as well

Oh, grandma gave me the finger today
She flipped me off much to my consternation and dismay
There nothing I could do and even less that I could say
Cause Grandma gave me the finger today

I was baffled and bewildered
I said, How could this be true?
But she said, Dont take it personal
Its just what grandmas do.
I said, What about clean water, Grandma
What about clean air?
She said, Son, Im gonna be dead soon
So I dont really care

Oh, grandma gave me the finger today
With a twinkle in her eyes as she sipped her chardonnay
There nothing I could do and even less that I could say
Cause Grandma gave me the finger today

I pinched myself
And said this has to be a nasty dream
Id always thought that grand and I were on the same team
But she smiled and shrugged her shoulders
And told me I was wrong
Then hit me with a softball bat
And said now move along

I hung my head in shame
And slithered out the door
Thinking theres no rhyme or reason
In the universe anymore
I skipped away melancholically
And before I was out of sight
I heard grandma screaming
Get lost sonny! And dont forget to write!

Oh, grandma gave me the finger today
She flipped me off much to my consternation and dismay
There nothing I could do and even less that I could say
Cause Grandma gave me the finger today

Oh, grandma gave me the finger today
Not just to me, but to the whole U S of A
There nothing I could do and even less that I could say
Cause Grandma gave me the finger today

Grandma gave me the finger today

Lyrics for "I Wish that I was Gay"

Oh, I wish that I was gay
So Id have an excuse for dumping you
And that would validate the conclusions
That youve been jumping to
When you ask me what went wrong
I dont know what to say
The answer would be so much easier if I was gay

I wish that I was queer
Then itd be easy for us to be friends
And you dont wanna hear
My weak explanations why it had to end
Well, Im not really sure myself
But theres one thing thats clear
I know that you would forgive me if I was just queer

Its a statement I could make
A position I could take
To make this all real to me
But its bound to fail
Because sex with a male
Just doesnt appeal to me

I always feel so guilty for the stupid things Ive done
I just need justification for my selling you out
Wouldnt it be something if I had the realization
I was really homosexual, but I doubt I doubt it greatly

I wish that I was gay
Then both of us could sleep at night
Oh, what a happy day when Im no longer so uptight
We could both live happy lives
Til our separate dying days

When youd see how I would be
And then might hear you finally
With me right in your face
But Im afraid its not the case
God damn! Itd be so convenient
If I was just gay

If I was just gay

If I was just gay

If I was just gay

na, i haven't... but thanks for the recommendation

I don't feel like reading through 260+ posts... but I bet no-one has mentioned Worm Quartet, or penfifteen yet.

Worm Quartet is a techno-punk-comedy one man band. Take a look at http://wormquartet.com/

penfifteen is a local techno-rock-death metal-country-punk-rap-polka-folk-comedy one man band. http://www.purevolume.com/penfifteen

On penfifteen's PureVolume page, he only has How I Roll, but "A Pirate's Life", "The Word Song 2K5" and "Role Call 902" are good as well. I suppose you could try to contact him from his PureVolume page and harass him until he posts them or something, I 'unno.

Yes I have seen that movie, and I have seen them at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, Missouri twice. In their stage act, they rotate instruments and at the break between acts, they always say, "Drink more, we sound better after the break!"

Also, they have the greatest live drum solo ever. All 3 members play the same set with 2 sticks each.

Nice. They've been through Portland (which has a fair population of crazy* Russians) several times, but I've never gotten around to seeing them. :(

*Not that I think Russians in general are crazy. I just have fond memories of some security guards where I used to work, one of whom would go shooting in the woods on Wednesdays with his AK-47.

The Dear Hunter
Kiss Kiss
Sunset Rubdown
Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (ska)
Streetlight Manifesto (Glad to know there's some more fans out there)

Prototypes (French Pop)

More popular, but still unknown to most of the people I go to school with:
Tegan and Sara
Sufjan Stevens
Arcade Fire
Of Montreal
Minus the Bear
Eisley
Catch 22
The Format
Imogen Heap
Joshua Radin

Actually, they just signed with universal, I think. Johnny 5 is on a 12 Cents for Marvin CD- B-Load, song Yellow Raincoat. Kinda weird to watch a fellow band "make it"... especially when they opened for our Halloween show!!! hehe- I'm so happy for them, don't get me wrong!

Some bands (with links)

Fall of Efrafa - a band whose work is based around the themes of the book Watership Down. brings a lot of unique instrumental and melodic ideas to crust.
http://fallofefrafa.com/the%20fall%20of%20efrafa%20mp3.html

Thou - creating music that spans every facet of frustrated, angry music. the song hooves in particular does things no band is doing right now. this band is blowing up in all areas of underground punk/metal.
http://www.myspace.com/thouband

Syphilitic Vaginas - japanese punk like GIZM and Zouo with early black metal riffs. their records, while in small pressings, sell out in hours. nightly fighter has been my song for weeks
http://www.myspace.com/syphiliticvaginas

Capsule - the most technical a punk band can get while still being catchy as all get out. cobalt connection is string after string of hooks. i recently was a strip o gram in a coconut bikini top for this band when they played here on the guitarist/singers birthday. a cake, balloons, and pinata were destroyed in front of them in a small cellar...i think there's pictures online somewhere <.<

Deltron, I believe I have heard of that except under the name "Deltron 3030" and it was Hip-Hop. If your into more of a sound like Protest The Hero, Destroy the Runner is pretty good.

Stiffs, Inc. are wonderful. It's hard to describe them, just check them out.
I also like Baumer (very cute electronica, their song "Baumer vs The Red Baron" is very videogame-like in some ways), Kiss Kiss(lots of violins and strange effects) and Moss Garden(relaxing and Brian Eno sounding). If your style is more Motley Crue & the likes, check out Lipstixx 'n' Bulletz. Theodore Grimmare pretty decent as well. Mellow The Band(psychadelic) are a lot of fun to listen to, and so are Hobomolobo (punk/psychadelic). Sara Da Pin-Upand Coco Electrik are also awesome, as well as Deep Sleep.
For solo artists, I recommend Yelle (very cheeky and awesome French electronica), Luthea Salom(Folk Rock/Pop, very sweet) and Adam Heart(AWESOME glam rock). AND Nicholas Megalis.
Oh, and a more or less local band that is still starting out: Apple Pie.
I also love Animal Collective, The Decemberists, Yo La Tengo, Magnet, Fünf Sterne Deluxe(German hip-hop ahahha) and The Weepies, though these are actually quite well-known, I think.

Fun Fact: Two of the members of Freezepop are in Harmonix. Actually, looking at their Wiki, it seems most of the people in Harmonix are in bands too, like Lightning Bolt(!).

On topic, The Shizit. Imagine if RATM started playing hardcore techno. The Shizit kick at least 5 times more arse than that.

Opening for Genghis Tron was kinda cool. We (GT, Kylesa, my friend who booked the show, my band) all watched Eddie Murphy standup for hours and saw some raccoon and took pictures with it. I think one of the raccoon pictures is still on the GT myspace.
