Lyrics that really speak to you

Postby PhantomReality » Wed Aug 15, 2007 4:16 am UTC

What lyrics REALLY speak to you to the point that you feel they must have been written for you?

Here are some of my favorites:

Led Zeppelin wrote:In the days of my youth
I was told what it was to be a man,
Now Ive reached the age
Ive tried to do all those things the best I can.
No matter how I try,
I find my way to do the same old jam.

good times, bad times,
You know I had my share;

Oasis wrote:Heres a thought for every man who tries to understand
What is in his hands (whats in his hands)
He walks along the open road of love and life
To find it if he can (but only if he can)

Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say
Chained to all the places that he never wished to stay
Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say
As he faced the sun he cast no shadow

As they took his soul they stole his pride
As he faced the sun he cast no shadow

Obviously a theme with mine. Fucking up relationships with the ladies. What about you guys?

I would like to post this entire song, but it is very long. Here is the chorus and bridge:

Eyedea wrote:We gotta learn to see the beauty in each moment in life
Everyone has different paths and we're seeking the light
The world is divided between peasants and kings
But the truth is everybody's looking for the same thing

Now I want you to know
The role you play is part of the whole
Without you it couldn't be, and I mean that with compassion
So if you ever need anything, I mean anything at all
I'm here for you; all you gotta do is ask man

I'm here for you, in the same way that you're here for me
Each person is an intricate piece of infinite
I feel that if you could see what I see
Then we as humanity could be free

I'm here for you, not for any self centered reasons
But because existence is interdependent and all's related,
Connected in its different manifestations of one single mind
You ain't isolated from the world even though it feels like that sometimes

If you care to read the rest, it is here.

Yay for Led Zep! I also like that intro to Good Times, especially.

Sean Kingston (Beautiful girls)
It was back in '99
Watchin' movies all the time
Oh when I went away
For doin' my first crime
And I never thought
That we was gonna see each other (see each other)
And then I came out
Mami moved me down South

You know what, fuck you Sean, I don't care who you are - even your mum probably hates this song.
He was born in 1990 and he says he went to jail in 99, you do the math Sean!

[/rant] - look I just really hate this song.

Led Zeppelin wrote:If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind [wo]man, I give you my all, Kind [wo]man, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

I'm listening to Thankyou right now!

I like the lyrics to Gallows Pole.
Here's the second half
Hangman, hangman, turn your head awhile,
I think I see my sister coming, riding many mile, mile, mile.
Sister, I implore you, take him by the hand,
Take him to some shady bower, save me from the wrath of this man,
Please take him, save me from the wrath of this man, man.

Hangman, hangman, upon your face a smile,
Tell me that I'm free to ride,
Ride for many mile, mile, mile.

Oh yes, you got a fine sister, She warmed my blood from cold,
She warmed my blood to boiling hot to keep you from the Gallows Pole,
Your brother brought me silver, Your sister warmed my soul,
But now I laugh and pull so hard And see you swinging from the Gallows Pole

But now I laugh and pull so hard And see you swinging from the Gallows Pole
Swingin' on the gallows pole!

Rhiannon is nice also.
All your life youve never seen a woman
Taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven
Will you ever win

She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark
And when the sky is starless

Oasis wrote:Today was gonna be the day?
But they'll never throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow
Realized what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do
About you now

And all the roads that lead to you were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
I don't know how

One of the few oasis songs that makes coherent sense and isn't just emotional wordflow. God what a cool band.

Vienna Teng wrote:strange how you know inside me
I measure the time and I stand amazed
strange how I know inside you
my hand is outstretched toward the damp of the haze

and of course I forgive
I've seen how you live
like a phoenix you rise from the ashes
you pick up the pieces
and the ghosts in the attic
they never quite leave
and of course I forgive
you've seen how I live
I've got darkness and fears to appease
my voices and analogies
ambitions like ribbons
worn bright on my sleeve

strange how we know each other

strange how I fit into you
there's a distance erased with the greatest of ease
strange how you fit into me
a gentle warmth filling the deepest of needs

and with each passing day
the stories we say
draw us tighter into our addiction
confirm our conviction
that some kind of miracle
passed on our heads
and how I am sure
like never before
of my reasons for defying reason
embracing the seasons
we dance through the colors
both followed and led

strange how we fit each other

strange how certain the journey
time unfolds the petals for our eyes to see
strange how this journey's hurting
in ways we accept as part of fate's decree

so we just hold on fast
acknowledge the past
as lessons exquisitely crafted
painstakingly drafted
to carve us as instruments
that play the music of life
for we don't realize
our faith in the prize
unless it's been somehow elusive
how swiftly we choose it
the sacred simplicity
of you at my side

I was really touched by a bit of Ben Folds:

Ben wrote:What if I'd been born
fifty years before you
in a house on a street where you live.
Maybe I'd be outside
as you passed on your bike.
Would I know?

And in a white sea of eyes
I see one pair that I
recognise

And Jonathan Coulton wrote:

Mandelbrot Set wrote:You're a Rorschach test on fire
you're a day-glow pterodactyl.
You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wire--
you're one bad-ass fucking fractal.

I dare anyone to do the hyphen thing to that last one.

Jonathan Coulton for the win! My sappy side loves "I'm Your Moon," of course.

They invented a reason
That’s why it stings
They don’t think you matter
Because you don’t have pretty rings
I keep telling you I don’t care
I keep saying there’s one thing they can’t change

I’m your moon
You’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

Let them shuffle the numbers
Watch them come and go
We’re the ones who are out here
Out past the edge of what they know
We can only be who we are
It doesn’t matter if they don’t understand

I’m your moon
You’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

Who you were
Long before
They said you weren’t
Anymore

Sad excuse for a sunrise
It’s so cold out here
Ice and silence and dark skies
As we go round another year
Let them think what they like, we’re fine
I will always be right here next to you

I’m your moon
You’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

Clutch - 24 Earth Years

I don't know, but I've been told I'm about twenty-four Earth years old.
and come my next birthday it'll be a quarter century.
I don't know, but I have heard a gnome from the old world say these words,
"Take a look what the cat dragged in; a red woodpecker and two of my kin."
Back in 1980, we played the AD&D.
That game was harder than the Elfstones of Shanara.
My character was baffling, a druid, wizard, halfling.
On top of that he was master of psionic powers.
Bring on the hordes, we have the sword
that smote the Goblin of Gygaxnor.
Pray that the sisters name us as victors
of the twenty sided die.
I don't know, but I've been told I'm about twenty-four Earth years old.
and come my next birthday it'll be a quarter century.
I don't know, but I have heard a gnome from the old world say these words,
"Take a look what the cat dragged in; a dead woodpecker and two of my kin."
Long ago in Middle Earth
a man could measure all his worth
by his blade and by his staff,
and by the runes on his epitaph.
Go mount your horse and ride up north
to seek the Baron of the Frozen Berg.
Ask for assistance in the resistance
of the twenty sided die.
I don't know, but I've been told I'm about twenty-four Earth years old.
and come my next birthday it'll be a quarter century.
I don't know, but I have heard a gnome from the old world say these words,
"Take a look what the cat dragged in; a dead woodpecker and two of my kin."
Saw Mazes and Monsters, Tom Hanks completely bonkers.
He spoke what he doth speaketh in Elizabethan.
Sad lad, he really couldn't handle starting from scratch on the very first level
But he died the death of a warrior.
A legend grows yearly by way of a local song.
The bishop and castle move in defense of pawns.
I'm rolling, I'm tumbling a twenty sided die.
A legend grows yearly by way of local song.
I don't know, but I've been told I'm about twenty-four Earth years old.
and come my next birthday it'll be a quarter century.
I don't know, but I have heard a gnome from the old world say these words,
"Take a look what the cat dragged in; a dead woodpecker and two of my kin."

Dream Theater wrote:Cut myself open wide
Reach inside
Help yourself
To all I have to give
And then you help yourself again
And then complain
That you didn't like the way
I put the knife in wrong
You didn't like the way
My blood spilled on your brand new floor

What would you say
If I walked away
Would you appreciate
But then it'd be too late
Because i can only take so much
Of your ungrateful ways
Everything is never enough

Sacrifice my life
Neglect my kids and wife
All for you to be happy
All those sleepless nights
And countless fights to give you more
And then you say how dare that
I didn't write you back
I must be too good for you
I only care about myself

In Flames wrote:It's not so much the pain
It's more the actual knife
Pretending the picture is perfect
I cut myself to sleep
I close my eyes for a second
And meet a fragile soul
I scream to to hide that I'm lonely
The echo calls my name

If I ever, if I never...
Make me understand the thought whatever
Make my see, make me pay
Make me understand you're there for me

Take a guess. haha

Edited to fix silly spacing, and to add a second song
Be considerate to others, or I will bite your torso and give you a disease.

Song I heard lately that I've since been hearing in my head constantly...

Johnny Cash - I Hung My Head
Early one morning
With time to kill
I borrowed Jebb's rifle
And sat on a hill
I saw a lone rider
Crossing the plain
I drew a bead on him
To practice my aim

My brother's rifle
Went off in my hand
A shot rang out
Across the land
The horse, he kept running
The rider was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head

I set off running
To wake from the dream
My brother's rifle
Went into the sheen
I kept on running
Into the south lands
That's where they found me
My head and my hands

The sheriff he asked me
Why had I run
And then it came to me
Just what I had done
And all for no reason
Just one piece of lead
I hung my head
I hung my head

Here in the court house
The whole town was there
I see the judge
High up in the chair
Explain to the court room
What went through you mind
And we'll ask the jury
What verdict they find

I felt the power
Of death over life
I orphaned his children
I widowed his wife
I begged their forgiveness
I wish I was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head

I hung my head
I hung my head

Early one morning
With time to kill
I see the gallows
Up on a hill
And out in the distance
A trick of the brain
I see a lone rider
Crossing the plain

And he'd come to fetch me
To see what they'd done
And we'd ride together
To kingdom come
I prayed for god's mercy
For soon I'd be dead
I hung my head
I hung my head

Most of Falling For You (by Weezer):
Weezer wrote:Holy cow! I think I've got one here
Now just what am I s'posed to do?
I've got a number of irrational fears
That I'd like to share with you
First, there's rules about old goats like me
Hangin' 'round with chicks like you -but i do like you-
And another one: you say "like" too much

But I'm shakin' at your touch
I like you way too much
My baby I'm afraid I'm falling for you
I'd do 'bout anything to get the hell out alive
or maybe I would rather settle down with you

Holy moly, baby wouldn't you know it?
Just as I was bustin' loose
I've gotta go turn in my rock star card
and get fat and old with you
'cuz I'm a burnin' candle you're a gentle moth
teaching me to lick a little bit kinder
and I do like you - you're the lucky one
No I'm the lucky one

I'm shakin' at your touch
I like you way too much
My baby I'm afraid I'm falling for you
I'd do 'bout anything to get the hell out alive
or maybe I would rather settle down with you

Holy sweet goddamn, you left your cello in the basement
I admired the glowing stars and tried to play a tune
I can't believe how bad I suck, it's true
What could you possibly see in little ol' 3-chord me?
I do like you, and you like me too!
I'm ready, let's do it baby

I'm shakin' at your touch
I like you way too much
My baby I'm afraid I'm falling for you
I'd do 'bout anything to get the hell out alive
or maybe I would rather settle down with you

My Baby's Eyes

John Reese wrote:There are millions of stars in the sky, but none shine as bright as my baby's eyes
I only wish that I could see, with all the wonder and love that my baby sees
How it must feel to see things all new, feel there's nothing you couldn't do
Fly like a bird and feel free as one to, wish I could start over with you
I wish I could start over with you

Watching you grow and play and learn, I see things that I missed or lost in their turn
Doesn't matter though cause as time goes by I'm seeing it again through my baby's eyes
I'm seeing it again through my baby's eyes

What a great gift from heaven above, its like a second chance at childhood
Just want to take you wherever I go, so I can see it through your eyes like it was all new
Eyes shining bright, arms reaching for me, this must be like what heaven will be
This must be like what heaven will be, this must be like what heaven will be

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense

And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

From "Back for More":
Somebody’s makin’ a fortune
Selling emotions to fools like me... who
Relate to what their sayin’
Obsessed and can’t stop playing
No use in changing stations... no
Cause it’s everywhere on the radio

I'm one of those people that thinks every song is about me, so this one always makes me stop and think.

Modest Mouse, as pathetic as it sounds, it just reminds me of the good ol' times in college *sniff*.

Also Drive-By Truckers always grabs me with "A wife and Two children".

It makes me contemplative.

Contemplation is oh so bad some days...
To exist is to resist.

i wouldn't argue that modest mouse is pathetic. isaac brock knows his way around a meaningful song.

edit: let me add my own song to this:

Crass wrote:Tried to get me in the supermarket store,
Bought what I wanted, they they said "buy more."
Mountains of crap that nobody really needs,
Gaily coloured wrappers to suit assorted greeds.
They've got the lot, that's what they want you to think,
Read between the lines, you'll see the missing link.
Buy this product, pay for the crap,
Quarter for the product, three quarters for the wrap.
Be a happy family, like the people on the pack,
Pay up to the profit, and you'll never look back.

Oh yeah? Oh yeah? Well I've got it all up here, see?
Oh yeah? Oh yeah? When they think they've got it all out there, see?
They can fuck off, cos they ain't got me, they can't buy my dignity,
Oh yeah? Oh yeah? Let me tell you, I've got it all up here?

hell, i'm not even muhc of a punk fan, but crass's lyrics pretty much defined the mentality.
uhhhh fuck.

Serious imaginative love interest anyone? (Please don't laugh  )
It's fine until you notice that the related heart ache isn't imaginative at all, and that you can't really cry on anyone's shoulder because they consider it to be rediculous, pathetic, stupid, childish and quite adulterous.

Trespassers William wrote:I Know

I know i'll never see you
I know i'll never run into your body walking through the crooked streets
I know i'll never hear you
I know i'll never hear you like a sound that wafts inside from outside there
I know that if i waited
i know that if i wait a thousand days will lie wasted with thoughts of you

My love i've pictured this:
Your violet eyelids opened to say "here's where you've been"
Your lips open to say "my darling it's been so very long and i'm in pain"

I know i'll never feel you
I know i'll never get so close to you that i can't smell anything else
And i know that the rain will soak you through and leave you like the tattered sky
I know i go in circles
I know that window panes bring only rain and not your face

My love i've pictured this:
Your violet eyelids opened to say "here's where you've been"
Sometimes i picture all your fingers
Sometimes they're crawling down my spine
Sometimes they're buttoning your jacket
Sometimes you're far but you're still mine

I know that it is raining and
I know that the rain will soak you through and leave you like the tattered sky
I know i go in circles
I know that window panes bring only rain and not your face

This came to mind (Believe - The Bravery):

The Bravery wrote:...
I am hiding from some beast
But the beast was always here
Watching without eyes
Because the beast is just my fear
That I am just nothing
Now its just what I've become
...
What you don't understand, you can make mean anything.

Jeff Buckley wrote:I once was open, and one with a traveling heart.
I loved this sweet god.
Just like the fiction rushing in your riverbed,
Arise like applause in my head.
And in the half-light, where we both stand
This is the half-light, see me as I am.
Just like the ocean, always in love with the moon,
It's overflowing now, inside you.
We fly right over the minds of so many in pain
We are the smile of light that brings the rain.
In the half-light, where we both stand
In the half-light, you saw me as I am.
I am a railroad track abandoned
With the sunset forgetting I ever happened,
That I ever happened.

Leonard Cohen's original lyrics to Hallelujah (I like Jeff's but Leonard's are better).

Also Liz Frencham's 'Jericho'

Spoilered for sappiness.
Spoiler:
Hello, you can call me Jericho
For I feel like a city forsaken by God
And oh, if only I were Jericho
I could wait for my Joshua.

From Nature Nous Semont

Nature nous semont
D'avoir cœur désirant
Adonc conquerons-nous
Oliver et Rollant

(Approx. English translation)
Then nature drives us
To have a heart with a desire for action
Then we will conquer Oliver and Roland

I might just like how it fits in the song but it has become a swell thing to say in my head.

i posted this in favorites too, but every tim ei hear this song these words, which are spoken over guitar at the beginning, stick with me for a very long time.

Explosions in the Sky wrote:Have You Passed Through This Night?

This great evil - where's it come from?
How'd it steal into the world?
What seed, what root did it grow from?

Who's doing this?
Who's killing us, robbing us of life and light,
mocking us with the sight of what we mighta known?

Does our ruin benefit the earth,
aid the grass to grow and the sun to shine?
Is this darkness in you, too?
Have you passed through this night?

annnnd this song makes me grin like an idiot and cry like a little girl... "things aren't pefect, but i'm willing to give it a shot if you are". It seems very honest, and sweet.

Bright Eyes wrote:First Day of my Life

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you'd just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

spoiler'd. (edited to put spoiler inside quote. Also, part of my sig is from this.)
Thee Silver Mt Zion - BlindBlindBlind wrote:
Spoiler:
The dust and the mess of our mornings,
Promise that we'll never quit
So drunk, though our hands surely woven
Entire fleets of staggering ships...
Now our ships line the floors of the ocean,
And the oceans breaching on the ridge,
And the terrified dreams of our wanderings
That once lit our way are now hid...

We want punks in the palace
'Cause punks got the loveliest dreams

And our gang is liquored and lovely,
And smart and sweet and lean,
And burn with a curious flame
That spits and kicks and shines
And trumpets the labour of wafing and trying

There ain't none - sometimes there is
Banged and bitter - but cling to it
Power's the province of miserable pricks
There ain't none but sometimes there is...

Policemen in parallel lines
Blind! Blind! Blind!
The broken bones of quivering pines while
Empty waters rise...

And the light of our striving still shines!
Blind! Blind! Blind!
May the light of our striving still shine
And may the light of our striving still shine...

Love the horse or leave the horse,
Love the horse or leave the horse,
Lover oh lover oh lover oh lover...

Some ! hearts ! are ! true ! Some ! hearts ! are ! true ! Some ! hearts ! are ! true !

Ahoy ! Ye bland plump boys
Go tear wings for vainful gain
Our home made choirs, like forest fires,
Hiss 'neath golden rain
And slip the leash and the chain,
And slip the leash and the chain -
Cause some hearts are true
But some hearts aren't hardly true
But some hearts are true...

Edit: and I though the 'love the horse...' bit was 'lovely horse' :P got the lyrics from here.

Not sure why but Leonard Cohen's

"Hallelujah"

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Also: Damien Rice's

"Lonelily"

I gave me away
I could have knocked off the evening
But a lonelily landed my waltz in her hands
In a way I felt you were leaving me
I was sure I wouldn't find you at home
And you let me down
Could have knocked off the evening
But you lonelily let him push under your bone
You let me down
It's no use deceiving
Neither of us wanna be alone
You're coming home [x4]
I gave me away
I could have knocked off the evening
But I was lonelily looking for someone to hold
In a way I lost all I believed in
And I never found myself so low
And you let me down
You could've called if you'd needed
But you lonelily got yourself locked instead
And you let me down
It's one thing being cheated
But you took him all the way through your bed
And now you're coming home
And I'm trying to forgive
You're coming home
And I'm trying to forget
You're coming
And I'm trying to move on
You're coming home
And you haven't called yet
You're coming home
And I'm trying to forgive
You're coming home
I'm just trying to forget
You're coming
I'm trying to move on
You're coming home
But you haven't called
You're coming home
You're coming home [x4]
I gave me away
I could have knocked off the evening
But I lonelily loomed her into my bone
You let me down
There's no use deceiving
Neither of us wanna be alone
"My God, man! Do they want tea?"
"No, I think they're after something more than that, sir. I don't know what it is, but they've brought a flag."

I spent all my money on drugs, and couldn’t afford to fly
I took a greyhound bus, you and your brat sat next to me
It wouldn’t shut up, so I lit it on fire
For 30 seconds it was louder, then it shut up

[Chorus:]
I lit your, I lit your, I lit your, baby on fire [x4]

You came back from the bathroom and smelled something burning
You realized it was your baby and I started to laugh
You asked the driver to pull over, but he laughed at you too
You yelled at me, so I roasted some marshmallows on your kid

It's funny, I had always thought that Rufus Wainwright wrote that song. I just looked him up on Wikipedia and found that he was just someone who did a popular cover of it.

INT +1!

And like many of you, I also share a love for Jonathan Coulton.

When I'm not being emo and comparing my life to "Big Bad World One", I like to think that things are more like "Drinking With You" (spoilerized for screen economy):
Spoiler:
We work late and I pretend that I don’t notice when you’re next to me
But I do
I might be mistaken, but I sometimes get the feeling that you notice too
And I know this place that’s near here
Quiet dark and small
When we’re finished here I think that I might want a beer, how about you?
It’d be nice to go out drinking with you

You would think that we’ve danced around each other long enough to know
Where we stand
And my heart stops in a panic when I think how it would feel to finally hold your hand
We can wait for this to happen
Or make it happen now
Either way I think that we should start off with a drink, maybe two
And it’d be nice to go out drinking with you

No big deal, we can play it nice and cool and keep the pressure off
Invite our friends
And we’ll have a few too many, we’ll discreetly share a cab home when the evening ends
When we reach that awkward moment
Standing at your door
We won’t even know cause we’ll just smile and let it go and sail on through
And it’d be nice to go out drinking with you

I used to think that too, until somebody mentioned the Jeff Buckley version. I am still especially partial to the Rufus Wainwright cover, though. It feels most comfortable to my ears.

Oh, I should probably post lyrics. Spoiler'd for length and awesome.

Were they good at their jobs
It must be hard, can they handle it
When we become what they said we'd not

Now we work and we pay for it
Doing any old chore
It makes money so we stick it through
And day to day
The days go by and by and by and by and well

I just don't want to die like a fool
I'm not lost
I'm somewhat off the way
I'm gonna do what I said I'd do at school
And be the one that says
'Hey, this ain't so hard and it's kind of cool'

When we look at the clock we know
How much longer we have
It's not the hours and the minutes that go
It's everything that we said
And it's gone are you glad

Now we're struggling to pay the bills
With the money we've got
And the world seems to frown on us
And we're learning more than we've ever learnt
And I like it a lot

I just don't want to die like a fool
I'm not lost
I'm somewhat off the way
I'm gonna do what I said I'd do at school
And be the one that says
'Hey, this ain't so hard and it's kind of cool'

speaking of defiance, ohio:

lay your head next to mine and we'll sleep one good sleep tonight.
fall asleep, love, to forget or to dream ... fall asleep to leave this world behind.

and i wish for you, friend, to lie down in peace and i wish for you always to know that as long as we'll dream under these stars in the sky that we've seen since the day we were born ...

... to move but don't move too fast for your dreams or your grandest of plans.

dream of nights of fireflies and skies so clear, so untouched. dream of a time, of a place for us to live, so free, so free.

just as quick as you can fall asleep.

The band - in my opinion - is way too much into itself, but this...
Spoiler:
30 Seconds to Mars wrote:"The Kill"

What if I wanted to break
Laugh it all off in your face
What would you do? (Oh,Oh,Oh,Oh)
What if I fell to the floor
Couldn't take this anymore
What would you do, do, do?

Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you

What if I wanted to fight
Beg for the rest of my life.
What would you do? (Do,do)
You say you wanted more
What are you waiting for
I'm not running from you (from you)

Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you

I tried to be someone else
But nothing seemed to change
I know now: this is who I really am inside
I Finally found myself
Fighting for a chance
I know now, this is who I really am

Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh

Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you, you, you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you
Come, break me down
Break me down
Break me down

What if I wanted to break...? (You say you wanted more, what are you waiting for? (bury me) I'm not running from you...)
What if I, what if I, what if I... (bury me, bury me)
... is embarassingly adequate to describe at least two different aspects of my personality and life.
