If you're OK with high-fantasy (imaginary world, fantastical creatures, not too much actual magic things), you might like The Liveship Traders series by Robin Hobb. First, Robin Hobb is amazing - her writing is emotional, clever, her characters all well-rounded, no surprise plot twists, everything is well-planned and makes sense. She has a bunch of trilogies happening all in the same universe but it's OK to start in this one, the second trilogy. It's all about a family of traders who own a (magic) ship trying to manage their financial and political success while facing pirates and colonial powers in a very dangerous world. The first book is Ship of Magic. I'll warn you that they're long, and your favorite characters will go through a lot of shit, but it's just great.
