Riddles from the Hobbit - in Latin

Postby InkL0sed » Tue Jun 09, 2009 3:45 am UTC

As a final project before the end of the year, two of my friends and I decided to translate the riddles from Riddles in the Dark. Thought I'd share them here, as a curiosity.

Quid habet obscuras radices
Altior quam est arbores
Surgit et surgit,
Sed numquam crescit?

Triginta equi albi in colle rubro
Iam frendent
Iam supplodent
Iam immoti stant

Sine voce clamat
Sine pennis volitat
Sine dentibus mordet
Sine ore musat

Lumen in caeruleo vultu
Lumen in virido vultu visit.
"Lumen illud simile huic lumino"
Lumen illud dixit.
"Sed loco humile
Neque alto."

Spectari tangi audiri
Olfaci non potest
Post stellis et sub collibus exstat
Cavaque vacua implet
Ducit primus postquam sequitur
Finit vitam, risum necat

Arca nec cardes nec clavem nec operculum habens
Sed intus thesaurum aureum celat

Vivus sine anima
Quam frigidus quam mortus;
Numquam sitiens, semper bibens,
Armas habens tiniens numquam.

Hoc omnia vorat:
Aves, bestiae, arbores, flores;
Ferrum rodit, chalybem mordet;
Lapes dura edendo molit;
Regem necat, oppidum perdit,
Altosque montes terit.

DUDE, I JUST finished Latin FOREVER yesterday and now you post this? RAAR. Ok, I am not all that great at Latin, but I will try to answer these with some coherency in Latin: Look for edited post in a day or two.

-Mons
-Dens
-Ventus/Aura
-Not sure yet... ;)
-Tenebra
-Ovum (weird word if pronounced the Latin way, no?)
-Piscis
-Tempus

This is fabulous! Good job!

Perfect so far. The one you haven't gotten is actually my favorite, because it has a lot of word play in the Latin version 8)

Oh yes, and I've just fixed a few small typos / grammatical errors as well.

You've got a good grasp of style--I'd say the work compares favorably to Symphosius.
