### Grid 4 by 4 with numbers and letters

Here's another puzzle that I haven't solved yet. Instructions are the same as with the last puzzle I posted, read them here: http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=109269.

We are given the following numbers and letters in a grid 4 by 4. There is one empty square there between the '8's, but there is no indication that we are looking for something to fit in that square. It could be that, or it could be something else. Again, the answer we are looking for should be in the form of one letter, either upper case or lower case.

Code: Select all

`1 0 7 k9 2 m 52 p 8 4h 8   8`

Anyone recognize a common type of puzzle?
Any suggestions, ideas, thoughts, narrowing of possible answers would be very welcome!

Hmm. Not at all helpful, but the first line, 1 0 7 k , is the ASCII value 107 for the lower case k.

The letters on the diagonal read "kmph" from top to bottom, i.e. kilometers per hour. I don't know if this leads anywhere.
(∫|p|2)(∫|q|2) ≥ (∫|pq|)2
Thanks, skeptical scientist, for knowing symbols and giving them to me.

Cauchy - you made the key observation.

The exact speed of light in km/hr is:
1.079252848.8

So the blank spot is a decimal point.

Well spotted.

Considering that OP asked for a single upper or lower case letter I would say 'c' is the letter we are after.

It definitely looks like you found the answer. Thanks Cauchy for directing our attention to the "kmph" clue. At the time I didn't think it was that significant. Thanks thefargo for coming up with the breakthrough idea to look for this notable constant! And thanks taemyr and everyone else who looked at the puzzle.
