Matchup

Postby BotoBoto » Mon Aug 03, 2009 10:10 pm UTC

Great name eh? I couldnt really think of anything else..

anyway, i saw this one in a magazine somewhere, and i really hated myself when i saw the answer. I hope you will also:

We have three numbers: 16, 38, and 7, and the following sequences of numbers:

A: 0 3 6 36 63 89
B: 1 7 41 71 47 17
C: 34 73 23 78 94

Which of our three numbers (16,38,7) would match with what sequence of numbers(A,B,C)?

( i dont know if this one is easy for you, or if it is written wel enough.. please correct my errors, english is not my native language.)

My answer:
Spoiler:
A. 38
B. 7
C. 16
My reasoning:
Spoiler:
It's the angularness of the numerals, right? Pointy digits, 1247 and maybe 5 are "sharp" and B only has numbers with these digits, A without, and C mixed.

Comment:
Spoiler:
The only quibble I would have, and it's a small one, is that calling the lists of numbers "sequences" implies to an English speaker that the ordering is important, which it is obviously not. Of course, when the answer is so obvious-when-you-see-it, disguising it a little bit may make sense.

So how should I call them? List of numbers?

edit: I'll leave it be, as it is supposed to make you stare at it for hours.

probably less than a minute actually;
Spoiler:
it must have been back in grade school when I ran into a puzzle that had to do with the shape of letters (which letters had symmetry, or something like thatI think) and I was delighted with the solution (or maybe very frustrated by it, or both!). Sooooo, still to this day, the shape of the glyphs is one of the first things I look at in puzzles like this, since it's pretty easy to check before moving on to trickier sorts of reasoning,
