Building computers for dirt

Postby photosinensis » Wed Nov 21, 2007 3:14 am UTC

I've been thinking that I'd like some kind of RISC box to play around on to actually learn a bit about the underlying realities of computers. Yes, I've got a large number of regular boxen lying around, but they're x86 boxen, and I really don't want to learn that as my first machine language, for various reasons.

However, I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on an Alpha, PPC, or the descendants of the Acorn RISC machines, even on refurbished boxen on eBay. That said, I want whatever I get to be a full desktop machine. No, emulators are not acceptable, as I've had terrible luck with them. Whatever I do should be a 64-bit platform, as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe something like this?

I don't know what you want in terms of price, and I don't know how standard that thing's keyboard/mouse/monitor things are.

Here is another one, not as good, but $10 starting bid (though with reserve, and a buy-it-now price of $200).

Well, that would do, if I can manage to win on eBay. I've had some luck getting decent deals there before, and don't know why I didn't think of it earlier.

Can you use a PPC Apple? Those are...plentiful.
