Possum stew. One 2kg possum, marinated overnight in a cup of red wine, some good splashes of worcestershire sauce and a dash of soy sauce. Two cups of puy lentils, two onions, two bay leaves, three carrots, three stalks of celery, cup anna half of stock, a bit more red wine and about nine hours inna cast iron french oven on low-med heat. Served with chive/tarragon mash and a Coldstream pilsner. *bes replete*

Cabbage boiled in dashi. Little effort, delicious, and leaves me with a flavorful broth to do something else with. Win.

A chicken braised in milk with lemon, sage, garlic and cinnamon. Farking amazing.
Also pumpkin gnocchi, which sopped up the sauce perfectly.

Pizza. Take a frozen three-meat pizza and add fresh bell peppers, fresh onion, fresh green onion, fresh mushrooms, sliced olives, and extra cheese to hold it all together for a really good kitchen-sink pizza.

I've never made gnocchi. This week I did try my first risotto though—and it was amazingly good. I will share with you all the recipe:

I went with what was available at the supermarket for fish, which turned out to be dover sole; and I used diced roasted tomatoes instead of sundried. I find it hard to get good sundried tomatoes, they're more expensive, and I didn't want them to overpower the olives. I served this with roasted zucchini with rosemary and parmesan. It was a big hit.

Lime and butter braised chicken hash. I had potatoes, green onions, limes, and carrots that needed eating, so turned alien-looking feathery frozen tenderloins into beautifully braised pieces of chicken...then tore it all up with the other ingredients to work it into hash browns.

Cabbage salad (like this, but more basic, and better). Cabbage is cheap, and the lady that owns the Korean joint I like won't tell me how she makes it. I will figure it out. Being made of boiled cabbage, green onions, garlic, mirin, soy sauce, and sesame, the failures are pretty nom-worthy.

The day before yesterday (yeah I'm late :)) I made pretty excellent Passover-kosher cake - the tall base was made from almonds, coconut and lots of eggs, I mixed craisins in it. On top of that I spread strawberry jam, on top of that I placed quartered apples after being cooked in wine and sugar.

I also reduced the sugar-and-wine syrup into some excellent jam-like substance,

Today I made grilled cheese sandwiches with apple slices with the preschool cooking class I teach. Then we played with dinosaur and cow figurines.

I don't ask why the dinosaurs are stored with the cows.

Sheol made his famous chips and I made a home-grown-tomato and herb salad, and we ate them with a Bloc de Foie Gras de Canard and a couple of beers (Hargreaves Hill Pale Ale). Teamwork ftw!

Right now I am chilling the shortening to make a pie crust for strawberry meringue pie!

The boy is also making a risotto with pesto and mint, and some red snapper for us for Easter dinner! He and my dad are eating a big piece of cow with their risotto instead of red snapper.

Today I made a sweet potato, tofu and red pepper stifry, with white rice and a sauce that I made with coconut milk, curry, red pepper and lime juice. It was pretty awesome.

Yesterday, I added 'sghetti sauce, mustard, apple cider vinegar, and hot sauce to some smoked pork my uncle made, for some sandwiches.

Today, breakfast was whole barley and mushrooms (dried) with garlic, and miso. Energy food for the lazy.

Yesterday I had honey-marinaded chicken with broccoli, carrot, water chestnut, parsnip and baby sweet corn (or whatever it's called). It was yummy, especially the water chestnuts, gosh I love those.

Today I made pasta and meatball sauce with boiled carrots. I have to admit that the meatball sauce comes from a tin, but it is absolutely the best thing ever. Nobody else likes it, it has a very distinctive taste (probably from the metal of tin) but I just love it. There's hardly any meat in it and the meatballs brake apart when you touch them with the fork, but that's why I mash it all up and eat it with a spoon from a bowl. Things are always a wee bit better if I can eat them with a spoon from a bowl. I don't actually even own any proper plates, just bowls and cups.

Later today I'm probably going to boil some more carrots and mix them with a little bit of honey and loads of butter. Heaven.

Tomorrow I'm making enough carrot bread rolls to last me a week.

I seem to have been eating a lot of carrot lately.

Macaroni with olive oil, herbs and home-grown tomatoes. Simple and awesome.

But not very filling, so I followed it up with some garlic snails on toast. That was almost too filling :P One day I'll get the balance right.

Saturday, I made traditional South African koeksisters! They are a lot of work and I am very proud of myself. There is a real knack to them and they didn't come out as nice as some I've had but they're not bad for a first attempt! I am sending them to some forumites as part of the Great XKCD Present Exchange (after carefully reading their countries' import laws and getting them professionally vacuum sealed).

oooh they look goooooood!

Today I made a cockroach cake. That is, a cake in the shape of a cockroach. 15 eggs, almost 2 lbs each of flour, sugar and butter. Plus jam & butter cream filling and fondant icing.
Topped off with home made toffee (caramel? just melted sugar, like on toffee apples) wings and pronotum, and chocolate legs.
I shall add pictures when I find the cable for my camera :)
It's my best friend's PhD defence/viva tomorrow, her thesis was on cockroaches.

A kitchen from a mess of boxes and old newspapers. I have moved 5 times since I last returned from Antarctica, in 2007. Before I went I put 99% of my stuff in deep storage, so we could rent the house while I was gone. Yesterday I finally got to unpack such beauties as my tortilla basket fryer, my dozen or so wooden spoons, the rice maker and so on. Bliss. Also about 35 board feet of cookbooks are now on shelves.
As for food, I made a nifty braise of pork chunks, sweet potato, dried pineapple and coconut milk for dinner. This morning I made creme caramel to have for dessert tonight. In my big kitchen, with all of my tools around. :D

My first chicken pot pies (for easy leftovers, I made it in several bowls, rather than one big casserole). Interesting flavor, since I started the soupy part with some dashi I had in the fridge. The biscuit dough wanted to sink, as well, so it's kinda half chicken and dumplings. Still...delicious.

... Beef flat ribs. Covered in spice rub (brown sugar, salt, chili powder, and some of pretty much every spice in the cabinet), wrapped in foil with some cider vinegar, and baked in the oven at F225° (105-110C) for about three hours.

I probably should have given it a fourth hour- I was hoping for the meat to fall off the bone a little more easily, but maybe that's just not in the cards. But other than that, the results were good; the rub was about right (could have been a little spicier, maybe I should use more chili powder or mustard, next time), and the meat was soft- but not mushy- and moist. Biggest issue was, they were wicked fatty- way more than I was counting on. Housemate's dog got a bunch of scraps of fat.

I've got another half slab (they came in one pack) marinating in soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. It's in the freezer, now; I'll thaw it out and give it a try in a week or so. That's one of my favorite tricks, freezing meat in marinade. Makes for an easy prep the night before- just take out a bag, leave it in the fridge for about twelve hours (I only do this on steak-thickness cuts or thinner- YRMV), and you can prepare a months' worth, all in an afternoon.

Sausage jambalaya, with carrots, barley (mixed w/ white rice), and rum (to deglaze, instead of wine or beer). Not as good as my derivative of Justin Wilson's, but not too shabby, either (and it used what I had around that needed eatin').

Chicken and dumplings-the fluffy biscuit type dumplings, not the flat noodley type. Lots of carrots onion celery and mushrooms, plenty of sherry and a bit of heavy cream.Very yummy. Used skinless thighs and it worked great.

I'm always too tired (read: forgetful) after I make something to post here, but this week I made:
-Granola cookies (oatmeal cookie recipe, substituting honey almond granola for the oats - a bit sweeter and crunchier than regular oatmeal cookies, and definitely recommended)
-Red velvet cake with chocolate frosting (all from scratch - no cake mix or canned frosting in my kitchen, thank you - and though the combination is a bit untraditional, it was a birthday request)
-Chicken stir-fry, with ginger and lime. I don't think I used enough ginger. I love ginger. :D

I should also mention that adding a spoonful of that frosting to regular made-from-a-mix hot cocoa turns it into something amazing. I'm glad I made a bit extra.

It was pretty good. Not leftover-friendly, though. Certainly, you've had coffee made with used grounds, right? Well, the tea that the onions and barley absorbed kind of did that, when heating it back up...

Last night I made shakshuka (basically eggs on tomato sauce, it's an Israeli thing). I also prepared lunch for today - mashed potatoes (with olive oil because we had no milk), and pea and carrot in tomato sauce.
