A line inside a square

Postby pyro » Thu Oct 18, 2007 2:22 am UTC

http://skares.org/

This started has patterns I sketched while bored in class.
Filling a square with a single line formed with vertical and horizontal segments.
Then did one in ms paint in a 100²px square.
Then with other people did 25 of these to form a 500²px square... still a single line.
And now it has grown to be this open site - planned to be a 10,000²px square filled with a single line.

They were named 'skares' by a friend while in a deep sleep-deprived state as a typo for squares.

It has a flash to make them. You can write a message to accompany the skare. Addicionaly I used the Google Maps API to also show the whole thing countinuosly.

Opinions please. ^^

(The site was just recently completed so you may encounter bugs, for these please also include browser and OS. Thank you.)

Interesting, but I can't seem to get the grasp of the skare maker. Probably has something to do with my unusual setup.

You take a square and fill it with 1 line in any pattern you choose. Then you take 9,999 other squares done the same way and ensure that where one line ends it connects to the next. When that's complete you have the entire skare maker. You have to click on "view all" or "map mode" or whatever its called to see the entire progress thus far.

Nonono, I understand the theory, I mean I think my setup is interfering with proper performance.

Could you tell me what kind of problem it is and what system are you on?
It could be some bug with the flash or even the html itself. The testing was restricted to a small number of systems until now.

EDIT: I noted that there were some made with no author nor message.
I'm tempted to assume there is a problem with the flash redirecting back to the page with that form.
This is my first flash and I'm relatively inexperienced in web design in general.
I may redesign the skare making pages this weekend.

I think that's right. When I completed a skare, I was directed to a page saying nothing but "100" in Courier. No links, no nothin'. I only went back to take a look at my skare by chance and saw that I could enter a message.

The maker is broken on IE 6, on this shitty school computer.

My java and flash applications have not been updated since 3/4 either.

It could be that: it was made for flash 9.
Other people have complained about the flash, so I'll try fixing some issues of it this weekend, because tomorrow I has a test.

Just thought I'd point out that this is totally awesome. My handiwork is mostly in the 12.16 area.
So, I got tired of the fact that the appearance of my band name in my signature made my posts on this forum the dominant result when googling for my music. Anyway, if you think I might happen to be a good musician, you can test this theory here.

Listening to good music really helps, but I kept getting stuck in corners. I hope this turns out well!

15.6.14 bears my mark of greatness. Even though I only did the bottom third or so.

Interestingly enough, you can actually see the clash in style between the person before me and me.

I've done a scattered handful and included poems by Ogden Nash in the comments.

Rockin' website idea, man.

Weird thing was, after I did a few, they no longer started showing up as completed on the map, but the text and username I posted as were there. The square is just blank on the big map.

This is because it's kept in the browser's cache. By forcing the refresh with Alt+F5 it should appear. I don't know how to make it refresh otherwise without having it refresh everytime (like, for using .png? and appending the time).

EDIT: fixed this. now it always checks if the image is up to date. it could have been easier if my server provided some apache modules i needed.

Quick! Someone calculate the first 3-5 digits of the xkcd number and the clarkkkkson number, or whatever.

The last digit of the xkcd number is either 5 or 9.

Also, quick and anything with Ackermann's function doesn't work.
