XKCD goes 2B: Portraits of the Fora

Postby GraphiteGirl » Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:13 am UTC

So after the kerfuffle over in the Woman Thread, I thought I'd better start a proper thread for these!
Ok, I'm going to start with the woman thread.
Everyone pick a photo of you that you love, full-length or just portrait, and I'll do individual portraits, then try and squeeze everyone into the same page. (This could take a few days... Or weeks...)

As soon as I'm done with this collage, maybe there can be a larger forum shot (which will take forever and a day, but it'll be great portrait practice!)

The first one is Cassi:

Next up, eternal luna, then, in order:
blue_eyedspacemonkey
Sungura
Moo
suffer-cait
semicharmed
Jessica
crickets
PictureSarah
sophyturtle
lanicita
grapefruit1
tin
abitha
Magic Smoothie
Plasmic Turtle
kellsbells
...and anyone else from the Woman Thread who adds photos to the list.

At the moment, I'm hosting the portraits in my deviantART scrap gallery, but if anyone prefers that their likeness not exist outside the fora, I can make alternate arrangements, just say the word!

Amazing what you have done with such minimal sketching. I can't wait to see more!

Yeah. Despite praising your work over in the Woman Thread, I'd like to again register my glowing praise of the drawing ability you have.

Also, this is a transparent attempt to get this thread into View your Posts.

I will be watching this thread with interest.

Could I add my name to the bottom of the list in the off-chance that you eventually get there and still feel sane enough to do more? It's okies if it's too much, and if someone else who posts more regularly in the Woman's thread comes along then do them first!
Spoiler:
These are probably the best pics I have, despite the bra in the first one being so ill-fitting I managed to get my hair under the strap (feel free to edit that bit out if you use that one?!)

It's been really cool to see all the pics in the Woman's thread, there's such a huge range of looks and styles but everyone's so gorgeous!

Have you taken art classes then Graphite, or just lots and lots of practice? Have you always enjoyed drawing?

The originals are near the end of the Woman Thread, at the moment. And now I have an anchor for "view your posts". Yay!

Edit: it starts about 2/3 of the way down page 459 of the Woman Thread.

You are breaking The Rules of talent*. Specifically, you have too much: awesome costuming, writing a musical (and I'm pretty sure you've mentioned writing at least one other play), and now this.

*But it's OK, as long as you use your powers for good (or evil; as long as I get to see it I'm happy.)

(^^^This is my pathetic attempt at a compliment. You're amazing!)

eternal luna, the original:

And in sketchified form:
Spoiler:

Once again, the proportions aren't quite right, especially around the eyes, but it's close - luna, you have fantastic eyes, by the way. They're hard to capture.

Plasmic-Turtle, you are now on the list!
Plasmic-Turtle wrote:Have you taken art classes then Graphite, or just lots and lots of practice? Have you always enjoyed drawing?

The only classes I've ever taken were high school art, and unfortunately I had to give that up at the end of Year 11, because it's absurdly time-consuming and I was busy trying to become a Swotty Law Student. But a little reading on the subject, and tons of practice, yes - my notebooks are all covered with doodles and sketches, and there were years of, "Oh, I can do cartoons, but not realism" before all the practice started showing and I finally managed to produce a likeness. Practice = magic. Slow, arduous, fun magic.
And yep, loved drawing since I could spell "pencil". Probably a little while before that.
Jessica wrote:I hope you're not overwhelmed...

Nope, I'm the very opposite - I haven't done much portrait work in a few months, besides the odd commission, so this should help me get back into practice; I'm going to aim for a minimum of one pic per day while I'm on holidays (excluding Fridays, as I work a very long shift on Fridays).
Princess Marzipan wrote:Can guys volunteer?

Absolutely - but I'm going to finish the Woman Thread series first, just because I want to do the collage thing Zohar suggested. A list of the non-WT-contributors who've expressed explicit interest in being portraited so far:
michaelandjimi
Princess Marzipan
...and anyone else who raises a hand at this point. I guess Zohar, smw543 and Felstaff would be next on the list, given that they were involved in the original comment-fest.
EDIT: Felstaff and Doogly, now also on the list.
Zohar wrote:GraphiteGirl, again, this is awesome. Could you also post a the original picture you sketched it from? I know it's not the point but I'm curious.

Done!

Also, everyone is lovely and gives fantastic compliments, but smw543 gets the prize for the hyperbolic praise of the day. :P He gets an internet, and a huge grin.

Commenting positively in the woman thread gave me licence to have my face portraitified? Awesomeinspiring. I hold no responsibility for your pencil breaking/refusing to commit my face to paper, however. It looks as though you already have a backlog forming of immense proportions. How long does it take for you to bring someone into the second dimension?

In the meantime, I will endeavour to discover a photograph of me that won't be as offensive to the eye as my parents like to tell me on a daily basis.

Also: nice pics. I imagine you drawing them like Sonny the NS-5 from I, Robot.

Also: nice pics. I imagine you drawing them like Sonny the NS-5 from I, Robot.

I wish I could pull a Sonny and just function as a human Scanjet. Me drawing looks more like... well, for one thing, I pull faces. I subconsciously imitate the facial expression of whoever I'm trying to draw. Not terribly noticeable for a portrait featuring a Mona Lisaish half-smile, but when you're looking at, say, someone sticking out their tongue...
In answer to Felstaff and TaintedDeity, It takes anywhere between forty-five minutes and five hours, depending on the level of detail, accuracy and polishedness I'm aiming for, and how strange or idiosyncratic the person's face is. Generic "pretty" faces are easy to draw for fun, but it's harder to produce a likeness of an ordinary, symmetrical face with no odd little features.
And as for you and your looks, I point to this:

This is probably the best picture taken of me to date. You may remove the fool on the left at your discretion.

Everyone who asked to be added to the list is now added to the list, but there's going to be a big chunk of time where none of these get done. I'm doing posters for a production, and the director has decided he wants two posters, with multiple figures, ready in the next two and a half weeks, so the portraits have fallen by the wayside in an effort to make that happen.
They will still be happening though, promise!
