Obohemia

Postby Ren » Tue Apr 24, 2007 3:46 pm UTC

It's a comic I draw! (It looks a lot like xkcd. I'm sorry. Replace the "science" bit with "oboe" though.)
My studio is hilarious, and being an oboist comes with all kinds of occupational hazards and humour.

Masterclass, where one sits and listens to others play, can get tedious on occasion. When I am bored, I doodle. When I doodle, crazy things happen. Here are a few samples.

Image
Personally, I think there's something to be said for disintegrating a reed with a laser.

Image
(Dick is a ninja...)

Image
Onegin must've been an oboist.

EDIT: Because I just finished another one, which is less of an xkcd ripoff.

It's a chicken with a stick up its ass!

Oboe, hobo ≠ bassoon.
That's been perplexing me for ages, couldn't figure out what it meant.
Silly me!

Nice comics, too. I like the idea of trying to drown a musical instrument, or part thereof.

Haha, reminds me of Band class. Especially the "Can I get 20% more?" part.

Showing these to an oboist right now. She's laughing, so I guess they must be funny (they seem like oboe jokes).

I like the dropping the reed picture. I can just barely make out, "See how YOU like playing high."

IT'S SUBTLETY, BITCHES!!!

I find it amusing as the first chair clarinetist in our band.

Brendan's getting squished in the door was inevitable, in my opinion.

This is the oboe comic of a friend of mine, which is going to be posted every once in a while on my website. When it's up. I get to make up alt-text, though.

Also, a few new strips! I actually have a 32-strip fake archive that will give me cred and make me look like I'm established. "What? No! I've been here months! Check out my archives!"

Your first comic reminds me of something we do in band called the wall test.

You see, you take a reed and jam it into a wall. If it's too hard, it'll snap brittley. If its too soft, the reed splinters. If it's just right, the reed will give just enough pressure back.. and then splinter. Pretty accurate test, though not all that useful.

Of course, that whole reed business doesn't concern me as a flute. (Viva la flute!)

I'm sure I've told you before, Esther, but I love your comics.

I still think the title should be "My oboe is sexier than you". :D

Don't feel stupid! Feel...non-musical. They're all, or mostly, oboe/musician in-jokes, which is half just my sense of humour and half vengeance for the people who draw science-humour comics.

Meet an oboist, and all shall become clear.

Speaking of which, I've been trying to restrain myself from posting some of the latest on my Facebook album, since I want to save them for the actual site (to give people a reason to go there and whatnot...updates...fear of running out of ideas...)
So here is one, stolen directly from that clip of Randy at MIT, only with my own twist.

If we limit the possible interpretations to sound pressure and sound pressure level here is what 20% more translates to:

Pressure: increasing the sound pressure by 20% adds about 1.6 dB which is around the “just noticeable differenceâ€

It is from QC, yes! And I want the shirt too.

And Spit--I did my grade 12 physics ISU on Tympani. They're made of at least twice as much win as a trombone.

You should have totally done the bar chimes. They have a missing fundamental.

Brass sort of having a missing fundamental. You're technically faking it when you play it... but it's complicated :)

It's time for you to get beaten down. Everyone knows the trombone is the third greatest instrument ever, behind glass armonica and electric 'cello.

D: I feel like an extra failure. I played Oboe for three years in middle school and I fail to catch onto some o the humor. (although I'm sure my band-pride-obsessed sister would).

But it's probably my fault, since I got kicked out of band for not having any rhythm.

Feel free to print them off, for sure! Reeds are expensive ($25 if you buy them handmade, $10 or $15 from a factory), yes, but a lot of us make our own. Equipment is expensive too, but you get a considerably better reed, and it will cost less in the end. Factory reeds are AWFUL. If your friend plays on them, tell her NOT TO. GRAAAAR.
I'm lucky if I get 2 good reeds out of 10. Reed destruction is an art which all of us in my studio practice.

Apparently they don't burn very well, though.

I'm glad you liked my comics, Jadestone. Did you check out the site? I'm waiting until my admin/techie guy/host adds title-fields into the code before I start putting more up.

However...(sneak peak!)

The oboe may be a phallic symbol, but only John Mack gives me eargasms.

P.S. John Mack was an amazing oboist...my prof took lessons with him, I believe...I came up with the concept for this cartoon while I was lying on the floor, listening to his "Tombeau de Couperin" (difficult, famous oboe excerpt) and actually, well...

You get the picture.
Mmmm....John Mack.

I don't think this will ever actually be a comic, but I thought I might post it here, just for fun.
