Nanowrimo 2009!

Postby mypsychoticself » Sun Sep 27, 2009 7:49 pm UTC

I know it's a bit early, but I'm already starting to think about it and was wondering if anybody else was planing on doing it this year.
Here is the link to last year's forum topic, and here is the official nanowrimo website. For those who don't know, nanowrimo is an insane attempt to write 50,000 words in one month (about 2,667 words per day). Small issues like plot and spelling are dropped in favor of word count.

I have a few ideas as far as characters and world development are concerned, but I have no idea what I'll do for a plot. I may just take the Against Nature rout and eschew plot in favor of crazy people being crazy. That's always fun :)

Who else is doing it?
I knew that we had suffered each as other,
And could have grasped your hand and cried, "My brother!"

I started a story a few months back that seemed fitted to novel-length. I'm now eight pages in and haven't gotten anywhere in a while, so I'm thinking of saving it for Nanowrimo. Last year I succeeded, so hopefully I can do it again. It's a solid story and setting I've got, not too weak a character, but it's a lot of science and stuff that needs figuring out. Still, I'm optimistic.

I failed last year but succeeded the year before that. I haven't decided whether or not I'll try it again this year, my course load is a bit heavy.

The last few years I've promised myself I'd give it a go and have never bothered to do so (usually because of busy-ness at work causing me to get home and sleep instead of get home and write). I want to do it this year but my want never has any bearing on if I do so or not it would seem :)

I'll give it my best though.

I'm definitely in again. Thanks for the reminder! I totally would have forgotten to think of story ideas if you hadn't posted this. (Not that a lack of coherent plot stopped me these last few times anyway :P ).

I won two or so years ago, didn't do it since.
I plan on giving it another go this year.

Yeah, I've never won either, but I think I'm going to put in a bit more effort this year--see how much writing I can fit in a day before I start forgetting words

 I've been anticipating it since June.

But I haven't gotten anywhere with my plot. In fact, I don't have a plot. Or any characters. Or any ideas. I should get cracking on that. It's Outlining Month, after all.

The NaNo forums are up, wooo!

Postifying my NaNo profile again: theGhostWolfe.

I'll be starting NaNo on the 1st local time, so before the word count function opens for the month. The 1st is a Sunday, and damned if I'm going to miss the single-most productive day of the month because of time zone shift. I'm such a NaNoRebel. :P

Oh Nanowrimo, that rolls around every year and which I'm pretty much resolved I'll never do...

I have problems turning out 100 words a week, and that's in fanfiction where I don't have to trouble with making original characters or plot. People who have won NaNo before, how did you do it?

Basically, I just didn't care about how good what I wrote was and convinced myself I would fix it in editing. My story was in the first person about a character closely based on me, with other characters based on people I know, so I instinctively knew how they would react in different situations. I drew sets and events real life whenever possible, which made being able to change them at will to fit the story feel positively liberating. My plot was light and very introspective and I let myself go off on tangents whenever I wanted. Whenever I really had no idea where to go, I wrote a dream sequence, which usually helped me get back on track.

Quality doesn't matter. My friends liked it and I've edited the first 20 pages or so but I just can't stand to look at it any more because it really isn't very good at all. But it did teach me a lot about writing and stamina, and was probably the best thing I've ever done for myself as a writer. For example, realizing that there wasn't really any difference in quality between the days that I was full of inspiration and everything flowed naturally and felt gold, and the days when every sentence felt laborious and forced, which is a lesson I still have trouble accepting.

Write! or Die!

As TheAmazingRando says, quality isn't what's important, it's about getting ideas out and down on paper.

I am anticipating that I will drop out after maybe 2 days or so? My attention span is horrible for these things. But I have surprised people (mostly myself) in the past and if I start feeling like there is someone who is challenging me I am definitely going to keep up as long as they do at minimum.

Err... what I am trying to say is that I don't promise anything but if you add me the chances that I last for longer increases quite dramatically. (Your choice though).

This was what I was trying to say but kind of failed at. It's so nice that there are others around that can formulate my thoughts better than I can.

Edit: I am actually getting quite enthusiastic about this now, so the chances I will last over halfway are at the moment quite good.

I am also worried that the more confident I am in October, the more spectacularly I'll fail

I'm planning on writing a 50,000 word story comprised of nothing other than book titles:

"Where's Waldo?" the Lord said unto Noah.
"Where the wild things are?" Atlas shrugged.
"Neverwhere," Nietzsche wept.

Now. I just need some vague semblance of a plot or something.

So, who wants to be my writing buddy?
I need someone to bounce ideas of, ramble incoherently to and just generally spill out some entusiasm on and talk with and I fear I am wearing my regular bounce mat thin.
Just send me a PM or something if you are up for it. Pretty please? Someone? Anyone?

The widgets go into forum sigs, so instead of my participants badge you see in the corner there, it would be telling you that, at this moment, my word count is 6,166, but would update itself every time I changed my count on the nano website.

I'm Nano-ing for sure this year! (At least I hope that's what I'm doing since I just wrote 5,000 words in a day...) I think I have a few of you as buddies from last year, but just in case anyone wants to add me I'm kgirlfae. I'm totally willing to challenge people and have word wars or sprints! Anything I can do to keep myself motivated.

My boyfriend and roommate are nano-ing too, and we're all pretty competitive, so anyone looking for competition can always track us down :D
