That's a great exercise. I've really gotta try that one day for shits and giggles.

And your citation is a youtube video? Le sigh. I'll have to check that out when I'm not at work, unless you'd like to give me an overview. I have a hard time believing that that's anything worthwhile, but I'll take a look.

It looks like it could be a fairly practical application of strength. That's one of the problems with exercise, right, that it sometimes doesn't translate to anything you actually do (for example, machines don't increase your functional strength because they don't work the stabilisers).

I'm not sure how useful it would be for BUILDING strength, but it looks like it could be a decent way of testing it.

What about soccer players who end up tearing their hamstring during a kick because they spend so much time on leg extensions? Surely you'd consider that a useful increase in strength from a machine, if unhealthily applied.

I should have qualified that. Machines are inferior to free weights, not useless. I use them myself; I do leg presses, hamstring curls, and leg extensions, but all AFTER I do my deadlifts and squats.

That wasn't the purpose of my post, anyway; I was positing a possible use of this particular exercise. Hurrah for unintended alliteration.

They're pretty fun, and good for core strength. If you can keep your core tight enough to balance 100 lb above your head as you stand up, you're good to go.

The video is just Mark Rippetoe (a respected strength coach) saying "This is the press. You could call it a shoulder press, but how can you press without your shoulders. I mean you could do a leg press, but that's gay." Not a wiki-worthy citation.

Ah, yes. "That's gay." I'll have to remember that one for next time I'm in SB.

this was in 2007, at the end of my last football season. i've slimmed down quite a bit since then, unfortunately :(

weight: 190 lbs

maxes for 1 rep:
bench: 285
squat: 395
cleans: 230

40 yard dash: 4.59
3 miles in 19 minutes.

I'm now climbing at English tech grade 6a (5b-overhanging)*; and Trad Adjectival Hard Very Difficult to Hard Severe**, This is odd, as my tech grades suggest I should be able to do much harder trad. I guess I'm too busy worrying about placing pro, and finding a good stance.

* roughly equivelent to YDS 5.11c (5.10b overhanging)
** roughly equivelent to YDS 5.6 to 5.8

Here's my record: 1/12th of a mile at a full sprint before becoming too exhausted to carry on!

Yes, I know I suck. I'm trying to work up to being able to complete a full lap around that 1/6th mile track. Then, I'll work on going further. Probably at a regular jog too. One of these days I want to have enough endurance to jog a full mile.

Yeah, I pretty much refuse to do any trad that's even remotely close to my sport (I assume that's what you're talking about, just a different set of jargon) limit. Too much to worry about.

I like your sig setris. I'ma use that. I was doing a lot more but I got a double hernia and appendicitis so no more lifting for me. Um, I'm proud of my mile run in 6 minutes. That's a big improvement for me.

I ran a 12 minute mile tonight! I've never run a mile under 15 minutes in my life (YAY!)

In other thoughts, anger is a fantastic exercise motivator.

Unfortunately, I only qualified for the 2010 Boston Marathon. I have to wait another year to do it :(

Clean = Deadlift to knees + explode up

Your form has to be off.

5k 18:47
10k 38:44
15k 60:06
10 mi 65:05
1/2 mary 1:25
marathon 3:05

So, these date from 6-8 yrs ago, I haven't raced in over 4 years and am only now starting to run regularly again. I find I am 1 min per mile slower at every distance, even on my short intervals (which I have tried exactly once and cried with discouragement) and xc runs. It's quite astonishing how the slowdown affects every single pace. I'd love to be fit again.

I'm a summer swimmer, which means I only train three months a year. This is also just my second year, so I'm not overly competitive, I'm mostly just looking to have fun and stay fit.
all times are short course meters

100 Fly- 1:07.57
200 IM- 2:35.6
100 Br- 1:18.55

I'm going into provincials this weekend, so I'm hoping to take off some time.

records eh...hmm let me think of a few.

2km erg 6:48 (haven't done one since crew selection which was ages ago, might update this soon....hopefully quicker  )
3km run 10:30ish
10km run 43:12 (doing another fun run soon as well :D )
400m sprint 54 sec
1500m run 5:05

bench 60kg x6-8 (depending on how I feel)
Squat 90kg x10
bicep curls 16kg x6
pull up x8. do this 3 times (proper pull ups!....i weigh 75kg)
push ups x30ish
lat pull down 75kg x10

longest bike ride, 60ish km, while trying to keep up with people on proper road racing bikes while I struggled on my mountain bike. Fun day that was, I ended up stopping twice to buy drinks from a servo because I sweat that much.

yea it was on slides, my time off slides is 6:25

the biggest thing slides do for you is help you bump the rate up, if your a bigger guy (200 lbs and up) they really could hurt you in comparison to others

Been doing 10k a bit recently (on a treadmill so I'm not really pushing my limits yet). Today I was really happy, smashed my previous (appalling record) and clocked in at 49:46. Next target is 45 minutes, should take me a couple of weeks, I guess!

EDIT: Under 48 minutes done!
