You know you have to transfer when...

Postby funkytwinkie » Thu Feb 28, 2008 6:10 pm UTC

hi, newbie poster here. *waves* let's see how you smart people respond...;)

I'm kind of stuck in the middle at the moment. I'm a first year student in a college heart of downtown. classes are alright, and the people are pretty cool.

but I'm looking to transfer. it's something i've been thinking about for a while. I can't seem to come up with a whole lotta reasons (particularly ones that could possibly convince my parental units). One reason is that i'm attending school in heart of downtown. I confess that I am not a wholly exciting person-- i.e., i don't drink, i don't like going to clubs. i like nature, one thing i can't find here.

so, when you're telling your parents and convincing yourself that you need to transfer schools, what do you tell them? i'm curious.

edit: i'm at mcgill university. looking to transfer to UBC for the same exact program. it would basically be the same quality education, no difference in price (UBC's a bit cheaper), but a WHOLE lot more trees. (yes, i am a treehugger. jealous?)

I transfered schools cuz it was cheaper to attend the state school rather than the private school in Washington that I was at.

One way to approach it is if you have a better idea of what you want to major in. Is the program at your city college a good one? If not... where's a better program?

UBC and McGill are both big, highly-ranked schools (see MaCleans you non-Canadians).

Eh, Personally I didn't really like the idea of UBC, it's a little too buisness oriented =/. You could however, try telling your parents you need to travel and you think it would help you grow as an individual. *grins* Parents are usually willing to understand that.
Are you looking to get away from big city? Because UBC tend to be a big city in and of itsself (even just the campus). Yes though, there are probably more trees :P.

While I suppose that UBC is an improvement on McGill on the tree front, UBC is cutting a lot of them down to put up condos. As well as silverwmoon said UBC is it own little city.

If you are a tree hugger who wants a tree lined campus go to UVic instead. Much, much prettier campus and a more laid back university.

Trees? In Canada? How many months a year are those poor things in leaf?

12, at least in BC. Well, at least the native conifers.

Honestly, if you feel like you need to transfer, there's probably something that's not being satisfied right now. Don't necessarily worry about what it is; just make sure that you take a realistic look at the other candidate schools and see if they really feel right for you. If you're not completely sure, I would say play it safe. But if you're really convinced that UBC is a better fit for you, do it, even if you can't articulate a single good reason.

"Dearest Mother, Dearest Father,

The thought of making any change to my quality of life, however positive and well-intentioned, without your approval, harrows my very soul. I feel, however, that the hurlyburly of life in the city is not sitting quietly with my education, and I would much prefer a more pastoral setting, to ease my mind and allow me to dedicate my attentions more wholly to my schooling. Please know that I have given much thought on the matter, and would not dream of making this decision without your advice and encouragement.
Would it not be far better to pursue my dreams where my heart can be at ease, than to constantly fight the distractions and tomfoolery of the unwashed masses in the heart of the city, where I have no real hope of solitude?
I look forward with great anticipation to a discussion of this matter in person, and I maintain that, as you have always wanted what is best for your children, you will no doubt be able to help me make this most momentous of decisions.
Love to little Janie, and I sincerely wish that little Oliver's cough has not returned. Assure them that I am thinking of them morning and night, and will be bringing them gifts of sweets and the like.

Yours with the greatest affection,
_______"
My goal in life is to have money, power, fame, wisdom, and love.
So far, I've got a sense of humor.
It's a good start.
