Why is XKCD suitable for learning English?

Postby RonStoppable » Mon Nov 02, 2009 7:13 pm UTC

Hi,

my homework for tomorrow:

Evaluating how "useful" an arbitrary website is for Austrian students (with an affinity for science, especially computer sience) who are trying to improve their English...

Of course I picked xkcd.com (not just the comic, but including the blog and forums)...

So,... any suggestions? xD

What I have so far:
- Science puns are a great way to extend your tech-vocabulary (especially for areas like physics and maths, where you usually don't have to resort to english that often as in cs)

Idioms. They're the trickiest part of any language to learn, i think, and humor is full of them.

The fora also provide back-and-forth exchanegs of dialogue.

forums are an excellent way of communicating.

You get to practice written english in an engaging setting! The back and forth makes it interseting, and you get time to compose your thoughts.

I am probably a little late on this, but the fora helps comprehend part of the English culture, which is something the few textbooks can do well.

And the level of vocabulary used here is much higher than most other sites.

That and the fora tend to be much less lenient when it comes to lazy misspellings and text-speak than the rest of the internet.
