Or maybe the vigilante could be like a body guard, and rather than killing a random other guy, he could be like a violent doctor, protecting a guy, but killing a mobster should they target him. This would give the townies a bit of a better chance as they seem to always lose.

I think you need Daleks as players. They don't really do anything, but the doctor has to pick them all out or everybody, including the mafia loses. It makes the game more interesting as the mafia must be weary not to kill The Doctor before he gets the Daleks.

That...that is wonderful. So like, the game would start off at lynch or lose.
Also, It'd be cool if The Doctor could regenerate every three days, or something.

I applaud, just for the Doctor Who references.

But only if he's lynched by the mob. The mafia would clearly kill him because he's clever.

Please don't lynch me. If you do you'll lose twenty dollars and my self respect. I'm the cop. AKAnotu is lying.

AKAnotu, why didn't you claim to be the cop after I claimed?
Also, why did you vote no lynch in Day 1

Why did Nebuck (for an entire two posts) let the masons accusation stand?

1 AKAnotu, Nebuduck, Jahoclave
2 Azreal001, MartinW, ???

There are two sets of possible mafia here. Isn't it a bit suspicious that two from one set defend each other (in such a strange fashion?)\

(Not giving up ;-))

(Sorry for the double post)
Also, AKAnotu claiming cop would make Jahoclave less suspicious. All three members of set 1 are defending each other.

So that's it. Town lost.
Congrats AKAnotu on that brilliant move. You cleared most of the mafia from suspicion.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Damn it! I am a Mason, and so is Mega. I'm pretty sure we've lost now. Let's wait and see.

Ah, well played.
Even if we did lose, this was more of a practice game than anything. This really shouldn't end in hard feelings.

Yeah, we must have lost. AKAnotu was Mafia, and so was Nebuduck. I have no idea why Nebuduck denied Masonship.

I haven't lied a single time in the entire game, I wasn't about to start. Also, I said that there were only two reasons AKA would have claimed we were masons - either he was a cop, and the explanation given was true, or he had an IQ in the 30s. I stand by that statement. Basically, him claiming that we were masons was effectively suicidal - if I'd said "Yes, yes I am a mason!" we'd have been found out in no time, I'm sure. So whatever options there were, I wasn't going to admit to being a mason - "AKAnotu can commit suicide on his own" was my opinion. But I wanted to avoid him being lynched if possible, which is why I came up with the explanation I did. Also, I never claimed that was the case. I said a number of times "This seems bloody silly, but I can't think of anything else that makes sense, except AKAnotu being a retard."

Oh, just so you know, a PM I received from AKA (I know we're not meant to send PMs during the day, but this was after I'd cast the lynching vote, so the game was kinda over):

Message Subject: I am an idiot, moron, and many other things.
Content: I could have lost twenty dollars and my self respect for us claiming we were masons. I posted it, thought about it, then realised i was a retard. I was going to edit it, but then saw macbi browsing the forum. You were right to deny being a mason.

Presumably you mean "cop" not "doctor". And no, it wasn't brilliant. It was a "Ah, fuck, the shit just hit the fan. How on earth can I figure out some way of showing AKAnotu in a good light..." moment. I accede that it was weird, though.

Yeah, unfortunately I and Mega were away, or I'm sure one of us could have turned the vote to AKAnotu. I'm surprised you still managed to get the vote to fall on Martin, even after AKAnotu had clearly lied. The "AKAnotu is the cop" thing was ridiculously unlikely.

Personally, I was pretty fucking impressed that I managed to come out with some argument from the situation that didn't lead to me concluding "And therefore, AKAnotu is the mafia". And I think you'll find the logic holds, the only question is if AKA would have been able to think up such a ploy. May I just say, I thought that game was pretty bloody brilliant, and the level of discussion that we got, particularly on the last day (before AKAnotu fucked it up) was brilliant.

I was actually pretty surprised that I managed to persuade people not to vote for jahoclave. Our mafia discussion the night before had been "Right, Jahoclave, tomorrow morning, what's going to happen is MartinW will say you're mafia having investigated you. Then everyone will vote for you. We will try our hardest, but you will be lynched. At least one of us will vote in favour of your lynching."

But I managed to avert that, and I think at one point (before the sheer level of ridiculousness occured. DAMN YOU AKA.) I was succeeding in persuading people that Martin had acted more guiltily.

Will we play the next game in this thread, or another? Vox, do you want to be in charge again, or do you want someone else to do it? I'd be happy to, if no-one else is.

I'm in for the next game. I like the idea of more players and a vigilante. But I don't like the bodyguard or regenerating doctor.

I was just wondering, how is a mafia game balanced? What are the rules for checking that a game is balanced?

Sorry, townies, you lost this one, but I have to congratulate the mafia. This was a very well played game; you won by convincing them to lynch the cop. Usually, the mafia loses in newbie games because they make a mistake and reveal themselves. Also, it's very strange to read this knowing which role everyone has, and it's so tempting to give hints, but I tried not to help either side.

Unfortunately, I can't host the next game, since I will be busy, but someone else please feel free to do so, and I hope you have more luck with drop-outs than I did. I would suggest making a new thread for it, and a good ratio of mafia:town is around 1/4. Sorry for my late response, but my internet connection finally started working again (it was Comcast's problem).

There aren't really any rules for it that I know of, but as long as the town has at least a couple of days' leeway and the mafia has enough people to withstand a couple of losses, they should have a fairly equal chance of winning. And sometimes there are roles that are harder on purpose, like the serial killer, who has to kill everyone else by himself, including the mafia, so the game doesn't need to be perfectly balanced, as long as it looks fun and isn't totally outrageous.

I also think the game would be made more interesting by the existence of secret powers -- that is, there are roles that aren't announced by the GM at the beginning.
The serial killer would probably be a good candidate for this.
