Ruined by a large amount of cleaning. Though why would you bother investigating, you can hear those things a mile away.

Joke's on you. The Roomba and I had a LOVELY evening.
Joke's on you, the Roomba. And I had a LOVELY evening.
Joke's on you, the Roomba, and I had a LOVELY evening.
Joke's on you, the Roomba, and I. Had a LOVELY evening.
Joke's on. You, the Roomba and I had a LOVELY evening.
Joke's. On you--the Roomba and I had a LOVELY evening.
Joke's on you--the Roomba and I HAD a lovely evening.

(that's all I got...)

I didn't know DJ ROOMBA was back on the dating scene, I'm sure Tom Haverford will be upset.

My Roomba would have just made the living room look like an exploded flower-bomb , and then gone in an endless erratic, bounce-off-all-the-furniture loop trying to clean it all up.
Madness takes its toll, please have exact change.

I don't see the humor, and it leaves me asking -

Why did the Roomba begin in a seemingly random doorway?
Where is the Roomba going?
Would that design of rose petal distributor furnish such a uniform and long path of petals?
Why did the Roomba make three 90-degree turns?
Why does the path not have little serifs where it made the turns?
Why did the Roomba make two turns where there was no obstacle?

So if the comic is #1183, why is the comment thread #1184?

This comic is completely unrealistic. Spreading rose petals on the floor would be a violation of the First Law of Roombotics.

This one was *extra* confusing for me, because we have a brand of tissues called Rose Petals:

So when you see little petals from a rose on the floor and a comic called rose petals, you're not sure if it's actual rose petals or a brand of tissues being referenced? Another clue, if the presence of rose petals weren't enough, is that the tissue is called "rose petal" while the comic is called "rose petals," plural. Also, I'm not sure who "we" is, but this brand of tissues exists all over the place.

I'm guessing the Roomba was hacked by his significant other. Or something. Of course, that doesn't explain the lack of serifs. I guess the fan would have to be hacked, too.

It may be that we're over-thinking this.

Did anyone else think of Bioshock 2 from the first panel?
It's completely irrelevant to the comic, but it looks a lot like a certain part in the game...

You can get a remote control for them. My Roomba's battery died, so now it sits in the basement half torn apart, till I get around to seeing about a new battery.

I don't understand the comic.

But just to show that I'm erudite (as erudite as a volcano), I'll say that it reminds me of a short story by Robert Sheckley, "Can you feel anything when I do this?". It's about a vacuum cleaner who falls in love with a woman.

When I think about it, I am not sure I understood the short story either.

One of my co-workers just told me that:

A. This works, and quite well.
B. This works even better if you get your cat drunk first.

I'm a bit scared to ask for more details, but considerably more intrigued than scared.

I don't understand this one! I know the rose petals must have something to do with love, but I still have no clue what this is about.

Usually XKCD's have some funny catch or are a reference to something. I don't see the catch here, and don't know what the reference is.

Could someone explain? Thanks!

I can try. After all, I have extensive education from movies. The conventional setup is that someone who loves you lays down a path of roses. Normally this path would lead to a bed with your love lying on it invitingly. The twist is that the pathlayer is a roomba.

And that is how you destroy a joke explaining it ....

So... there isn't more to the joke than that? I was still holding out hope that there was some more depth to it that I'm missing.

I don't get why the roomba is even involved. As far as I understand it, whoever set up the roomba could have simply made the path of petals by herself. Except that Roomba is inherently funny, both as a word and as a robot

I would much prefer if the path of the petals ended somewhere weird, like at a bus stop. Or better yet, if it went around the house and connected to the beginning, thus trapping the guy in an endless loop.

Not quite the same trope, but I was reminded of this:

Not sure how well it worked as advertising - I had difficulty finding it, believing that it was an advert for a completely different product.

Not sure how well it worked as advertising - I had difficulty finding it, believing that it was an advert for a completely different product.

Ads are not supposed to work on the conscious level. Great video, BTW =)

Thanks for the explanation, that makes me understand it a bit more! I'm still missing one thing though:

Why is it funny that the pathlayer is a roomba instead of a girl? I mean, ok, it's a twist, but I don't see how it's funny, or interesting. Someone played a prank on him? But this kind of prank is only funny to the one who did it... Or his girl dumped him and did this to hurt his feelings? Nothing funny or interesting about that.

Also, couldn't whoever installed that roomba thing, have laid out the path by hand instead?

I don't know, but I'm filled with both shame and curous wonder about whether the comic number will be 1185, or if next thread will be 1183.

I'm guessing both will be 1184...

Why can't people just accept the love of a man and his Roomba.
