Obviously, it's an indicator that the 17 is written in decimal system.

Like prime numbers as the integers increase, as Time passes there will always be more Blitzers!

As for John Cena, he was one of the running jokes/memes during Desert Bus 9.

I'll join the chorus of welcome to @ColletArrow, and point out my glossary of terminology used in this thread. I've made a lot of other OTT-related stuff, far too numerous to list here, just start at the index.

Way-delayed response here:

I'm very curious.

I have theories… but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't yet read/finished Homestuck (or Blitzers who haven't yet finished BSTA). But maybe it's just a reference to the SWEET CATCH! in frame 2453.

Theories,
always interesting to see with what theories people can come up about the things you do.
You have to be careful also when reading theories - it can make you want to comment and that can be a source of spoilers.

Another risk is with posting theories.
If you post a theory
ald later you find out that it was correct,
is it because you were lucky at predicting what the author planned?
Or your theory inspired the author to change something?
(Similar thoughts for when you find out that the theory was not correct)

I had a dream some time ago:
I was talking with someone
about a crazy bsta heory.
I asked why he could even think that this theory makes any sense.
He accidentally admitted that he read it on a bsta wiki that they secretly made...

Taixzo,

In the meantime I can let you play a game.

A game? That sounds like fun, and maybe a bit recursive. :)

These last two frames are a nice reminder of the pretty blue framing of the BSTA page.
If we look at the image in the image when we're playing a game, will the frame around the image in the image turn that orangey brown?

Such an effect can be achieved, actually:

(to see this correctly you might need to do a hard refresh, that's because it required a small change in the bsta css)

I did have to do the hard refresh - before I did, the inner frame was transparent as you suggested, which was also treeish. :)

Hehe, no it's fine, your hat is particularly treeish. Viking cat ftw. Funnily enough no, the hat thing started long before the Beanies (I assume that's who you mean by weird people) turned up. A user named Buffygirl started hatting people's avatars and it just took off.

My blitz journal indicates that OTT:195:3 was the first mention of hatted avatars. Indeed as @yappobiscuits mentioned, it was @buffygirl, and she was a strong motivational force in the adoption of hats by others here. That post was retro-edited to include that first bespoke-hatted avatar, because her avatar changed again later. The hat is a dark red zucchetto (the hemispherical skullcap-type thing cardinals wear).
A couple pages earlier, in OTT:193:10, @bigcrag92 writes, Woooo do i get a hat? after being named Arch-Cardinal. From this and other contemporaneous posts it's pretty clear that the hat thing started with the assignment of fictitious titles, which in turn were part of the "parody religion" aspect of the developing OTT culture.
The parody religion was foreshadowed in OTT:54:15 "I, for one, welcome our new Randall overlords." and OTT:58:25 "…this psychic glimpse into the future courtesy of ''God's'' technical difficulties…". I also cite OTT:63:35, calling it the "first use of the phrase ''One True'', not counting the re-edited first post [by @rhomboidal] and first significant religious language not by @Helper" (who by the way eventually became the first "pope" of the thread). Shortly after this, note OTT:65:14 "On another note, I think we've started a religion. I'm not sure whether to be horrified or amazed." Soon @PhoenixRising commented, "Eh, let's stick to creating a civilization and overrunning what little might be left of the Outside. A religion seems a bit OTT." in which "OTT" meant "Over The Top", but now seems nothing less than temporal paradox and/or brilliant foresight.
At any rate, people took the religion thing and ran with it: OTT:66:29 poses some of the basic questions of doctrine. All of those posts (from page 54 to 66) spanned only six hours of real time. The hats started 3½ days later.

Of course, many on the xkcd fora have hats in their avatars, and there have been a couple times that such a person has joined in on this thread, and it was noticed that they were (conveniently or coincidentally) pre-hatted.

Hello again from the shadows.

I have not kept up with the OTT since T** E** (I'm a permanent resident of the comfy chair I suppose), but have occasionally checked in to see familiar faces and smile to see you wonderful people keeping the joy going. The new othercomic touched my heart and I had to return here to where I belong, even if briefly. Anyone want to join me in sending a virtual hug to the GLR?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, I suspect that the entire thread would join in. And welcome back TimeLurker!

I have the original Othercomic ("Two Years") in my office. I felt a real kinship with GLR and Megan since they were going through breast cancer at the same time I was. Hard to believe that six and a half years ago I was bald, and I've grown out my hair and donated it twice since then. Take that, chemo!

Welcome, Peaceful Whale, to you and your hat! Obviously you'll fit right in here.

Welcome forward, TimeLurker! Molpish to see you.

Congrats on 10%, ColletArrow, and good luck on your exams.
