It's chilly up here, which is a distinct advantage in Cuegan's favor as it is likely to discourage raptorish activities and predation; however, this chill in the air is also a poor climate for them as they will suffer from the colder temperatures. But really, what do you expect from climbing a mountain, Cuegan? And something about a taco.

Except that the sunset is all wrong for (that part of) Africa.

The sun was going in a ~45 degree angle, from left (SW) to right (NW), which points to mid-latitude northern hemisphere. If it's winter, further to the south, and it it's summer, further to the north. (Several people posted the (approximate) numbers, I can't be bothered to look them up.)
So maybe this is the far north of Africa in winter.

Hmm. Far north Africa would not fit the geographical ranges of keyboards or Calabar pythons.

Still dropping fast, if this continues, it will be pitch black in 3 newpix.

I still don't completely understand what was going on. I still refuse to believe that it was just the sunset that made it darker, that makes no sense, with the sun still so high above the horizon. The exposure correction theory didn't work out either – the scene would have briefly gotten lighter right after the sun went behind the horizon. Clouds? A local, thin layer of low clouds (or fog bank) might do the trick, but it'd have to be very local. If it were widespread, we wouldn't have been able to see the sunset itself (as there would be more cloud/fog for the sunlight to cut through). Smoke? Maybe. Also'd have to be localized. But there's no way that Cuegan wouldn't have commented on that.

Finally, anyone have an idea what Megan was doing on the right side of the frame in frame 2378?

Why haven't they built a fire to keep the wildlife away? Or, at the very least, make it easier to see should something come at them?

I don't know. I would have said that they don't know how, but kenmelken's wiki-work seems to have proven that wrong (and it would seem odd to set out on a journey without that know-how). I would have said that they don't want to be seen by other people, but now they do want to find other people in order to get help for Megan. Perhaps they are worried that the fire would attract more raptors?

That means this can not be Madagascar. It could still be southern hemisphere (then our coordination mapping would be wrong and left would be noth), but Madagascar is on the tropic (not in the least mid latitude). Another suggestion was northern Australia, which has baobabs (although not the right kind) but northern Australia is also at the wrong latitude. And they haven't died of something poisonous yet.
Therefore I think this is not on Earth, but somewhere in the Randalverse.

I'm still an Africanist. Baobab + acacia + keyboard + specific snake all read Africa to me.

I've been looking at edo's estimates on 936 and 941 concerning the sunset, and they seem more Africa-friendly (or at least friendlier to the regions I favor). Still a bit north of where I was estimating before the sunset, but the lower bounds are closer to the proper molpy ranges.

A fire doesn't always help you seeing in the dark. If you sit down staring into the fire and turn around to see a meowlpy in the bushes at night you will probably fail. Your eyes will be adjusted to the fire, due to dilation and light bleaching of the rod cells (rod cells function well in the dark, but shut down in light). For most people it takes about 20 minutes for the rods to "wake up". Dilation takes a second but it's just not enough by far.
The meowlpy however will have eyes that are adjusted to the dark. It won't be blinded by the fire because dilation is fast enough to prevent that. It can see you easily and it will have approximately 20 minutes in which you can't see.
If you do not have the self control to sit to with your back to the fire a fire can be dangerous.

True, this would be northern hemisphere if this were earth. On the planet Randall this depends on which way the planet turns around it's axle (and what's defined as North over by Him).

I'm also starting to be a Randallversian.

Hmm, somehow my brain crashed on this. I thought the camera could face the other way, not realizing that would mean it would be a sunrise.
True, this would be northern hemisphere if this were earth. On the planet Randall this depends on which way the planet turns around it's axle (and what's defined as North over by Him).

Or it's Cassini, as I suggested yesterdix (like others have in the Distant Past).
Looks like Africa, and even Madagascar, would be in the right place for the sunset!

Maybe I'll become a Cassinist ...

Hmm, yes that seems plausible. Angle is about correct. If the change happened quickly (and without pesky inertia problems) and not to long ago (can still be hundreds of years) there would be baobabs there. Quegan didn't seem to know something changed, but then again they don't know much about anything.

There is indeed a star (or planet (or plane (or Superman))) on this newpix. Just a single one, above the tree, almost at the top of the frame.

ETA:

I respectfully disagree.
On a clear night, up in the hills, away from civilization, there'd be many, many more stars to be seen. Must be pretty hazy if only one star or planet manages to shine through it.

The first star I see tonight;
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

What? I can't tell you my wish - then it won't come true!

Anyway, I'm off to coma. Molpy down...

Almost any climate zone that lacks permanent ice has an occasional temperature swing that would allow for such a thing. I've slept rough in unusually warm weather even in a boreal forest (Dfc if we're using Koeppen classification). The temperature reached a near-record 102F/39C in the heat of the day in the valleys - and was still uncomfortably hot even up where I was, a km or so higher. I fell asleep while trying to dry off after my evening wipedown and tick check, before crawling in my tent, getting in my sleeping bag, or, indeed, even dressing again. I regretted it later because I got a mosquito bite or two (mildly NSFW)

In a drier climate, there would be enough radiative cooling that I imagine I'd have been quite chilly by morning. And they're obviously going through a semi-arid upland, whether African, or the altiplano of central Mexico, or Cassini, or some other Randall-world. The combination of arid climate, upland, temperate Northern latitude, and mild nighttime temperature is, uhm, unusual. Maybe some sort of maritime desert, where there's enough of a marine cloud layer to hold the warmth in at night, but not enough precipitation to sustain a forest? Relocate some fauna to Cassini-Madagascar, or plant some baobabs in Spain or Italy, and maybe it might work.

Wiki Warrior to the rescue! They actually did build a fire during the first River Period (not gonna lie--that is one article on the Wiki I've not had time to retroactively update and it is currently just a stub). The fire is first seen in frame 1048, and for several frames they warm their hands over it while they converse. Later, Cueball appears to extinguish it in frame 1059 and appears to bury the ashes between frames 1061-1064 (this is the same sequence sometimes interpreted as a show of outdoor toiletry, but I think it is actually very clear he's burying ashes here, especially since it is at the exact same spot as their little campfire was, and burying ashes seems logical since they've shown wariness of other people in other conversations and may be trying to hide any signs of their trail). Interestingly, pelrigg was the only one who caught on to the presence of the fire back when it first appeared, and nobody (except a brief response from Valarya) really paid attention to him.

snip...

ETA One more reason I believe it's clear he's burying ashes in that sequence: There is a very clear pile of ashes there before he digs the hole, and then the ground is flat again afterwards. The ashes went SOMEWHERE, conveniently during the time he had a hole in the ground.

I don't agree here. My interpretation was that it is food they had between them in 1048 and forward, not a fire, and that it was the rests from the meal he was burying. And after re-analyzing the event I stand firm in my belief!

PS. Those personal smileys people have are incredibly cool!

PPS. This is a message from the past. It wasn't when I started on it, but then some agitated coworkers appeared and I had to take a rest... :?

Cue may ask himself, "where is that small trebuchet?"
Cue may ask himself, "where is that beautiful beach?"
Cue may tell himself, "I don't see our beautiful castle..."

Letting the frames go by, let the water wash the ground
Letting the frames go by, mustard flowing underground
Into the black again, after the fade-out's gone
Once in a live Time, mustard's flowing underground

Same as It ever was, same as It ever was,
Same as It ever was, same as It ever was,
Same as It ever was, same as It ever was,
Same as It ever was, same as It ever was...

Semen dissolving, and mustard removing
there is mustard at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the semen, carry the mustard
Remove the mustard from the bottom of the ocean

Letting the frames go by, let the semen wash the ground
Letting the frames go by, mustard flowing underground
Into the black again, after the fade-out's gone
Once in a live Time, mustard's flowing underground

Into the black again, into silent mustard
Under the rocks and stones, there is mustard underground
Letting the frames go by, into silent mustard
Once in a live Time, mustard flowing underground

Cue may ask himself, "where is that small trebuchet?"
Cue may ask himself, "where does this walking lead to?"
Cue may ask himself, "am I right, or am I wrong?"
Cue may say to himself, "my Randall, what have you done???"

12 xips ago I said I thought we were overdue for a chapter break, and predicted one by last Monxip. I still stand by my basic prediction, though I failed to figure for a Last Big Dramatic Action (namely, the rowrmolpy attack) that threw my time prediction off by several days. But I still think the Darkening will lead to a shift of narrative focus, quite soon now.

In general, the tendency is going to be to choose "north" as "whatever direction makes the sun come up in the east, so our entire frame of reference doesn't melt down." How this applies to Cassini, I can't judge. Will residents keep the pre-flop directions (saving money on maps), or will they keep Cassini's axis as north-south?

Good explanation about the fire, however; I've seen many times how much darker the rest of the world gets at night, when you have a nearby light source. I won't use a flashlight in the country at night unless I absolutely have to.

Are there differences in how this scene looks in different browsers, as there were during the fading?

Edited to add: can one of you poetics write up an OTTification of Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" ?

It's been done, back on NP 483:

"Once in a live Time"
(based on "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads)

Spoiler:
They may find themselves, walking in the big outback
They may find themselves, in another part of the world
They may find themselves, with a small trebuchet
they may find themselves, on a beautiful beach, with a beautiful castle
They may ask themselves, well, how did we get here?

Aw, thanks, k.b. -- It's good to be back! This was filked back shortly after the mustard-underground period, so it leans heavily on that. Plus, I just noticed I forgot to exchange one "water" with "semen" (now there's a phrase I don't use every day. ).

EDITED to Add:
Also, in looking back at NP-483 from where this filk came from, I found a small post of phenomenal prognostication:

You were very right, indeed, squonk!
