intheshax wrote:Greetings, OTT. I'm, going to nudge my post count closer to 5 so I can post an image by telling the story of how I experienced the the OTC and OTT, and how I shared them with my best lady.

On day one of the OTC, I checked in on xkcd around the middle of the day, as I do on MWF, and things were already afoot. It took a while to figure out what was going on. Explainxkcd was overwhelmed and not responding. Thank Randall I knew about the fora! How long has the link been gone now? How much crazier would the OTT have been if it were easier to find? Am I wrong or do you have to just know the fora are here because of the link that used to be there? Isn't this an inside group of something that's already an inside group? (Sorry if these questions have been asked and answered. Even though I was here all along, I was not able to keep up with the pace of the OTT. I tried not to skip whole pages, but often I could only scrape the skin off the top of the ketchup coz it had been out too long.)

<snip>

Wow, this is a treeish post! :) (Not to mention seaish, otherriverish, and baobabish (both 7 and 8).) Ah yes, explainxkcd being overwhelmed that day. I ran into that problem too. And four and a half months later*, in retrospect, I'm glad it was down. Because if explainxkcd had been working, I would have just read the explanation there, and continued to follow Time...alone. I would never have found this wowterful community. And I'm sure the experience would still have been amazing, but much less than it actually was. I think I can truthfully say that this is the first online community where I've really felt at home. My only regret now is that I didn't delurk sooner.

Speaking of you wowterful people, I've passed many treeish things on my longketchupblitz. I can't mention every one, but rest assured I've enjoyed all the colorifications, ottified songs, and OTTercomics, monopoly pieces by schwartzbewithyou, the Tale of LaPetite by jovialbard, various poems by BlitzGirl and the one by Kieryn (when's part 2 coming?), and the singing by lmjb1964 and yappobiscuits, especially Megan and Cue.

ack it's stuck in my head again

Also, I see from peeking ahead (bad blitzer) that TheMinim has made it to the present, and Helper has returned. (Hmm, I wonder if Helper even knows who I am?)

* Wow, it's already been three weeks since the ___ of Time?!

Post preview tells me that you guys are making those ridiculous puns again. You otter know that's a bag idea.

Tis! I went for the shorter orchestral version since I didn't think many folk would be keen on death metal growls, but here's the full version anyway for good measure ;). They just released this EP a few dips ago and I've been addicted to this song ever since...

I'm actually in the process of ottifying it. It's an awesomefully uplifting and triumphant song that translates well into a song about the awesomefulness of the OTT! It's a challenge though since it's in German and I'm ottifying it into English...

Oh no little one, you cannot so easily come to the basement with us! You have not been properly... initiated.

Come now, and we will begin the dark ritual of the basement heretics! Brethren, awake from your slumber, and begin the ancient chanting! Light the heretical torches! Bring forth the sacred alter and megaphone! Min, say your goodbyes to the OTC! Do not run, do not resist, for it is futile, you are already ours! Bring on the tears and wailing, so that the Blitzgirl, our eternal guard, may awake her wrath and properly keep you down here locked away forever!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sorry, couldn't resist, I don't get enough chances to come here or post as it is...

These are pretty awesome... and a great idea to 'reenact' the OTC! Especially if we crowd sourced. Everyone get a set and we can assign a handful of frames to each person, create a standard 'frame size' in legos, and photograph each one. Thereby creating the LegOTC! You know, because we don't already have enough Time side projects as it is...

Yup. The UK and US governments are both really big on mustarding up the internet for everyone by censoring it to chirp these days *sigh*

The filters can be turned off, it's just mandatory for ISPs to set them to default to on now. The problem is I live with my parents and they have all the account details. Yeah, try having THAT conversation (Um yeah, I need the adult content filters taken off for... like, work and things... not porn. Honest. *ahem*)

This is why there's such a huge opposition against it from pretty much everyone. The government are all "Oh but you can turn it off whenever you like" - Sure in theory, but it's not that simple, as you're basically forcing people to admit to their families/partners that they watch porn. Which hardly anyone would be comfortable doing. Chirping nanny state *sigh*

Actually, the over zealous filtering will help here, once you can show something legitimate has been blocked. The real issue is if I find out my dad's already opted out...

This whole policy is supposed to be "protecting children". Whole crapton of mustard if you ask me (or anyone who isn't a pretentious chirphole (aka politicians)).

I'm really curious as to what that youtube video might be. But I'm too scared to click it after what you just said.. I'm at work. Anybody less scared than me?

I'll just say that the internet is really really great...

That probably doesn't make you less scared unless you're really familiar with that song does it? Oh, I should have hidden the link in a secret spoiler...

I'm sure you've all heard Britain's clueless government have made adult-content-filters mandatory for all ISPs... well the damn thing blocks that link because it apparently falls into the category of "dating"! Mustard. Chirping. Ridiculous.

  What?! Are you serious?

Yup. The UK and US governments are both really big on mustarding up the internet for everyone by censoring it to chirp these days *sigh*

Spoiler:

I clicked on it now and it worked. Seeing as this is my dad's place and he's in control of the internet... I'd rather not know that, to be honest. Do government people not know that it's best to leave well enough alone?

Well, if I'm let out, I'd be able to find chocolate for myself...

Well different ISPs might filter different things, I dunno. And no, I don't think they do :(

Many moons ago I was designing a resdential optical broadband system - we (the engineers) suggested it was called

Hi, umm, yes, I'm calling to have PORN installed in my house? Yes, will that go directly to the TV? And the computers? Ok good, now I hear you also have a phone package for PORN. Now I hear that PORN won't work on my phone if the power goes out, is that true, because I'm not sure I like that. Uh huh. How much was this again? Wow PORN is expensive, I might as well just go out and buy a hooker!

You know, I've always heard that about the internet, but I've never quite been sure what the internet is great for. Can your little ditty help me with this source of confusion?

Oh good point, maybe I should ottify some Avenue Q. "The Internet is for Threads", or "Everyone's a Little Bit Papist", or "If You Won't Stay"...
... or "OTTenfruede" ...
... or "What Do You Do With a BA in English" (the name stays the same but the lyrics change :) )...
... or "It Sucks when Time Ends"...
... or "OTTification"... (instead of Mix Tape, I know, it sounds awkward, but I did my best)...
... or "I'm Not Reading Any Posts Todip"...
... or "Lucky" (as sung by Lucky the meowlpy)...
... or "You Can Post as Many Times as The Chirp You Want When You're Posting ONGs"...
... or "My Thread-Friend Who Lives in Canada"...
... or "There's a Fine Fine Line" (Oh, yeah, it's the same, but I think it applies perfectly well to T** **D almost as is for some people)...
... or "There is life outside the OTT"...
... or "Oh I Wish I Could Rewind the Comic"...
... or "For Now" (Look, there's just so much you can do with that!)...
(I think I might be spent on avenue q ottodies... for now!)

Thanks for posting that, Earthling on Mars! All your adjectives are nice to hear. I'll grant you "seaish" and thank you deeply for all the rest.

I had not thought about it that way, but I agree completely about being glad explainxkcd was down. It's still reasonably likely that I'd have found the OTT at some point. I have frequented the forums many times, though never participated. But it is by no means a sure thing.

Explainxkcd is a great resource. I go there all the time, even when I'm pretty sure I get the joke (it happens sometimes), just to see if I missed a subtlety or out of curiosity over what they will say. They have a pretty good page on the OTC, and they caught on to the changing image pretty quickly on day one. If I'd seen what they were doing, that might have provided enough to keep me from looking for the thread here. Good thing for me I was impatient. I think. Yes, I'm going with "good thing".

Has anyone here read their whole page? It's got some interesting stuff on it, but is clearly a separate community from this one. They never named Rosetta/Hairdo anything, and they call LaPetite "Beret Girl"! There is definite cross-pollination -- they checked over here during The Long Night and found out about Antares, and they say "Beanies". Going in the other direction, Deplicator, the creator of the geekwagon viewer posted here only twice (both links to his site) but was rather active over there.

Another observational note: their discussion page for Time was last updated August 2. They are all gone.
