lmjb wrote:I want a tankless water heater, but apparently I have to wait for a couple of days to get one shipped. Do I want to be without water for that long?
I would, if only because tankless heaters are so much more energy efficient. They're not that much more expensive than a tank (if you can afford a good unit in the first place, that is; if you have to buy the $200, 5-year electric heater, what's keeping you from slapping a few commissioners to make it worth your while?) Our hot water heater had to be replaced not long ago, and we'd have replaced it with a tankless unit if this neighborhood had gas lines. (Denizens of civilized areas: add the lack of gas lines to your understanding of the Cueballness of suburban sprawl in the US.)

That's an even twelver address. However, Google Maps doesn't recognize it as a complete address; at least for them some of the redundant rest is not redundant.

Took me a while to translate twelver.
Without the house number (8) Google handles it fine. If you can't work out which of a dozen or so houses is number 8 then that's on you. ("you the hypothetical address searcher", not "you the idiot tortoise")

This TimeAccessor is somehow 10 minutes in the future. Could this be responsible for the fact that it can't access half the internet? (Having corrected it manually, the issue seems to be fixed. "the issue" including not being able to post this)

Also, how the ch*rp did it manage this? And why do some internets work while others don't?

Part 1 doesn't matter unless it happens again. But do you have a cat? Cats can do some unexpected things to Time Accessors. More than once, my parents called me because their friend Catherine had switched the display to inverted mode.

ucim wrote: Once, an OTTer, weak and weary from a blitz with eyes all bleary
pondering newpages quaint and curious. She could not withdraw.
While upon the leopard tapping, images of cats recapping
suddenly her mind was snapping - snapping as had ne'er before.
"'Tis but jest", she muttered. "Nothing on the page unseen before.
It will raise a loud guffaw.
Spoiler:
Ah, distinctly I remember, though my mind's a dying ember,
That a ghost would soon dismember all whose words would dare explore
eagerly the play of meaning, then await, while sitting, preening.
Now however all was molpish. "Treeish humor, bring me more!"
Thus the future's fate was settled, no-one knowing what's in store.
"Treeish humor, bring me more!"

Pondering the rising waters, to the myriad of OTTers,
this decree was taken inwards. Nothing here they would ignore!
So that now, to feed NewPages, words whose meanings came in stages
fell upon the leopard keys in quantities not seen before.
After every posting came another likewise playing more.
Merely this, and nothing more.

Deep into the window peering, seeing words I found endearing,
as the Cuegan took their backpacks wandering upon the shore,
came the word that turned the table, all at once she was unstable
Movie pictures were re-titled, making films that heretofore
hadn't had a chance to flourish with the OTTer's new rapport.
"The Baginning". Nothing more.

Startled at the silliness ensuing, soon her eyes would glisten.
Tears of pain were forming, falling on her humble chamber floor.
'Twas her doing, no denying. That could not prevent her crying
out to try to keep the punning from becoming ever more.
That, her kismet: Sanity would be upon her to restore.
Be there wordplay? Nevermore!

So it was one morning fatal that ideas in stages natal
entered into BlitzGirl's mind when words whose double meanings gnaw.
But the OTTers, still beguiling kept on typing, punning, smiling,
as the thing that needles pull continued on with molpish awe.
Bags injected, unprotected BlitzGirl would become The Law.
Nothing left but "Grab the saw!"

Filled with power, chains for cutters, leaving all the thread in sputters
Valiently attacked she at the needle-pulling's glaring flaw.
OTTer fragments everywhere when off she molpied on a tear. Then
screaming Swedish she would vow that no pun would escape the saw.
Soon "Vitssagen Ja!" became the battle cry before The Saw.
"Puns from OTTers? Nevermore!"

Undeterred the thread continues through the sound of ripping sinews!
Meanings double, triple even, as the puns would not withdraw.
'Tis ironic karma showing as the OTTers, easygoing,
bait the punsaw, winking, blinking, nodding as they ask for more.
Soon the scrumptious donut came but still the OTTers ask for more.
"Ja, Vitssagen! Get the saw!"

Soon our June Bug, HES, and others proved that they would saw their brothers
given punnish mental efforts sent by leopard as before.
Yet I see in twists ironic, they both pun and drink the tonic.
Nothing will escape the wielder of the Great Vitssagen Saw.
They, themselves pay retribution to the Great Vitssagen Saw.
"Punning we will not ignore."

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
never having entered into verses penned by me before.
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming
puns to leopard into needle-pulling-things to underscore:
'Tis a battle joined eternal: sanity to thread restore.
BlitzGirl's here forevermore.

Apologies to literature lovers everywhere!

Raucous applause, cheers and whistles! That's brilliant, ucim :D

I spent seven years in California; quite a contrast! It's beautiful out there too, but it's a very different kind of beautiful.
Just cast a thought my way next time you see an immense hunk of rock that the road goes through. It's so flat down here! My elevation's only 17 feet, and I'm 2-4 miles from the ocean depending on which direction the crow flies ;)
California can be quite beautiful, yes, especially in the northern section. But my Eastern Seaboard soul can never quite relax on the San Andreas Fault :| and San Francisco is where I have family. Basement, doors, monsters
Spoiler:
Neil_Boekend wrote:
BlueCrab wrote:

azule wrote:All doors lead to the basement.

We should probably fix that.

Don't remember what I was going to say about this, presumably something clever about continuing efforts to map the basement, or Doors being a DnD monster...

Nope, not the doors:

Description: Basement (huge monster)
Appearance: cavernous space deep under the OTT
Form: Skin is one with the bedrock supporting the OTT.
Abilities: Special form of Dimension Door. Able to create Dimension Doors anywhere in the OTT. With these Doors the Basement traps unsuspecting OTTers which form it's food supply.
Occurrence: There can be only one.
Attack rate: Unpredictable.
Weaknesses: Time related remarks from GLR.
Defenses against The Basement: None are known. Some OTTers are released again by the Basement after a while, but many are never seen again.
Much is unknown of the Basement. Those who wander to deep into the belly of the Basement never return to tell the tale.
Well that explains why it's been so difficult to map: I've been trying to use graph paper, when what I needed was a trans-dimensional anatomy model. I'll go see if I can find one...

Do you think my dressmaker's dummy would do for a start?

Also the OTC is getting very exciting! I'm genuinely impressed at the mindboggling amount of decoding, analysis and interpretation of first the astronomy and then the linguistics of beanish. It's truly an achievement, both for GLR and the OTTers.

Looks like it's only going to be two days for me, so I should count my blessings. And my neighbor had water, so I could use his.

And yes Aluisio and BlueCrab, you need a permit for a water heater, even if you already had a water heater and are replacing it with a similar water heater. Our county Planning Department is know for doing all sorts of unmolpish things like that. But they do not, as I was told, charge you for it when you buy the water heater, so my friends are just going to install the new one and the county will more than likely not be the wiser. And I'm just going with the standard tank kind, because: reasons. :)

And yes, northern California is beautiful, and I'm only 1.5 longpix from San Francisco! So, if there's a meetup happening there, let me know. And vvn! I miss vvn.

Can someone explain the Ohio thing to me? And ENAP?

Oh, I totally didn't look it up, just happened to have Google a few obscure synonyms for "bag" handy. And hey, you lived just 100 times from where I lived! (I guess it doesn't really work that way, does it?) I enjoyed the address trivia. Actually, Japan or somewhere, your address is the number of the block you live on, and then where your house is on the block. Or did I make that up? And I that that English addresses had quaint things like, "Upper Derbydarcy, Little Heathhill, The Scone," or somesuch. :P

I was also confused about the Ohio thing. Is it a reference to the Furious Doodling?

I loved all the cute and epsilon bugmolpies! And I loved that mrob is an other-dimensional squid, whatever that means. :)

Yes, flat here it is not. I'm enjoying the scenery out the window for you right now. :)

Oh, and BlitzGirl - that was quite a molpish poem on the end sequence! Dunno if I mentioned it, as I've been praying a lot. :)

lmjb wrote:I want a tankless water heater, but apparently I have to wait for a couple of days to get one shipped.

Hell-o Blue Crab;
I feel like sticking my nose in your conversation.
The Cluelessness of American Suburban Sprawl is Complicated.

Gas Lines?
There is a real place on the Northern California Coast that produces Natural Gas.
That Gas is piped across a river. There, the Stink is put in.

That hydrocarbon comes out of the ground ready to be used.
It needs Stink.

After it gets its Stink.
It is too expensive to pipe back for use by The People.

Other places can't have natural gas pipes, because until recently, the pipes did not stand up to Earthquake Activity well.
Natural Gas is such a Joy and it is so easy. Those with Natural Gas are fortunate. Electric may be the way most of us must go.

There are Electric Tankless Water Heaters.
I Know there are. Old Ones, too.

The first time I took a shower with one of those, it frightened me.
It was OLD! It was Electric and I was standing in Water!

Somewhere deep inside I heard a voice saying, "These things don't mix well."
I Lived! You might, too.

The Newer Ones may have a Circuit Breaker.
How great would that be?
Life is, just, an exchange of electrons; It is up to us to give it meaning.

Why not talk about the real rocks?
I know only a little about rocks. It pretty much stops at "they aren't tasty" .
What kind of rocks could be below the reactor to allow radioactive water to reach the ground water?
You didn't know it hurts when they hit you? You're one of today's 10,000!
Something porous like limestone would allow water through, or any kind of stone if it's fractured badly enough. An earthquake strong enough to collapse the Straits could have done it if the reactor was close enough - I un-basemented well after the start of Time After Time, was there discussion about which reactor this might be?

Some rocks are tasty. You can have them on chips.

If there was a discussion on reactors I missed it so excuse me if I'm repeating anything. But if the water in the Med has receded like the Messinian Salinity Crisis there shouldn't be any nuclear reactors near the current water line unless advanced civilization survived until after the earthquake. Nearest reactors at the moment would be the Spanish ones.

Suggesting that that's a river and not the Sea then the reactors at Ascom, Vandellos or Cofrentes are all possibilites.

Thanks for the further explanation. I didn't know that 8 was the house number. And I got your meaning of "you", silly hamply

There are enough further tiles that filling the grid with Rosettas won't lead to the heretical numbered tiles. Not that I could possibly know this

I know about the electric tankless water heaters. They are not even so expensive! But it would not work well at my house. The installation would be difficult.

My house is not a normal house. It is on wheels. It looks like a house, but it is in a park. It could probably have a tankless water heater, but they tell me it would be too hard.
