Wonderful RNM poem, Jose! I love that BlitzGirl just gives you donuts on the assumption that you punned. I think it's a safe assumption.

Poor round-glasses guy (I think that's round-glasses guy), trying to get work done and everyone else being distracted by Time. By the way, I feel I must point out that kxa is the only one in bftf wearing clothes...

Oh, I'm supposed to fix my links to take on the the dnsd part, aren't I? I will, I promise!

Once again, Automome is pretty correct.

These are the only that are still noticeable after the detail-level low pass filter (which is superimportant). And hats.
Also, on frame 7 he is holding his hand in the pocket.

Sometimes even the arms or mouths are filtered out (368).

My attendance at the conference is looking even more likely, since it turns out we're only doing the Viking fest from the 18th.

I've pretty much given up on trying to get to the conference via the University.

azule, I'll release the code as soon as I uncomment the async/await keywords (which JSHint doesn't support yet) and finish writing this research project about the Beanie Ship.
Um, yeah, I must remember: it's not generic. It's about the Beanie Ship.

Hello all you OTTers, I'm back, at least for the moment.

A message about the impending real life OTTer meet brought my attention back to the OTT, especially when I realized it is going to be right here in Germany. The invitation took me to NP2125 of the OTT and from there I have been blitzing on and off up to NP2143 where Helper's baobabish post inspired me to delurk.

It's been over a yip since I'd abandoned the OTT and there's no way I am going to ketchup on all that's been posted since, but a mip's worth of posts at least seems more manageable, though some skipping will probably be necessary.

I am probably going to attend the conference. While I'm not planning on preparing a speech of my own, I will gladly volunteer to offer my services as a proxy speaker for any OTTer wishing to submit a speech but unable or unwilling to make a personal appearance be it physically or remotely. Also, being fluent in both German and English, I would enjoy helping out visiting fellow OTTers whereever the need for assistance with German arises.

That's all for now, it's high time for me to molpy down.

I have to say, the entire argument o fRoko's Basilisk falls short for me. It depends upon my beleiving that a future similuation of me is me. That doesn't really make any sense to me. Unless you both beleive in a soul, and that a superintelligent future AI can capture it, there is no possiblity of continuity. the me that is me will die, only to be replaced at some future point by a program that thinks it is me.

Or, as another, lesser an possibly not true comic put it:http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2001-03-20

So, I do think you are all worried about something irrelevant. THe suffering of some other chap is deplorable, but as it can have no effect on me, I see no reason to alter my behavior in any extreme way.

I'm fairly sure we've had worse when it comes to stress pattern contortion to let that one slide.

(or allow a bit of confusion and start retrojaninspoilering ? ^^)

by the way, "stress pattern contortion" would fit neatly in a double-dactyl ^^

Perhaps your brain needed sugar and compelled you to pun in order to receive a scrumptious donut.

Good biological strategy, except for the times when you get the punsaw instead of the donut.

It's a gamble, but I think it's worth it under the right circumstances, i.e. if you're starving. If you take the gamble you either get the donut and are saved, or you get the punsaw which is at least a quick death rather than the slow death of starvation that you'd get if you do nothing.

Yep. The box contained "all the Pinklymolp manips", which in turn contains this manip (and also these), which in turn contain the floating disembodied head of Cueball. As CD said, it's a pretty TARDISy box.

That strip illustrates the "teleporter as cloning machine" problem. But it's not true uploading.
The key to uploading without that problem is to use the "gradual replacement" method. One should transition one's mind gradually into the substitute. That means linking the brain's components (neurons, synapses, and whatever else is necessary) to an equally large set of external components, and allowing the consciousness to gradually evolve to the point where it is running in a distributed manner across the entire system, then allow the natural components (original neurons) to gradually die out.
As most of the molecules in a body (a few tissues and ossified matter excepted) get replaced "every 7 years", it's not too hard to suggest this is at least a good approach to start. I even wrote fiction about it and posted to the exropians newsgroup back in 1998. It's a bit dated, but what the ch*rp.

I think that weak point is easily bypassed, at least for the people who believe in a singularity (and they're the only ones who were listening when that argument was developed).
There is no need to consider multiple entities "me" and "simulation of me". These folks believe that any society would eventually develop to the point where they're simulating the universe Matrix-style, except that instead of a physical body hooked up to a computer, the whole thing is in the computer. They also believe that there's no good way to figure out if you're "in the simulation" or "in a real physical universe". The really out-on-a-limb believers say that the two are equivalent: a simulated universe is just as real as a real one. And (weak point) they believe that the number of Matrix-like simulations will inevitably be very very large, and therefore it's more likely than not that you're in the Matrix. That is a weak link because it involves observational selection effects. But the Roko's Basilisk fearers believe it, and then it's a simple step to imagine any number of wacky things.
If they buy into the entire argument (including the Pascal's Wager nature of your own choice, and the hypothesized AI's utilitarian-driven decision theory) then there are other flaws that are addressed the same way as in Pascal's Wager and as in normal blackmail scenarios (respectfully).
