No, of course we aren't a cult. We are a culture.
We do have a couple cults and religions, but don't take them all that seriously...
Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

Addams thanks all of us who helped. Her life is much better now.

We seem to have picked up some cult-like elements, but that is sarcasm.

It turns out that a bunch of xkcd fans can develop a community whilst waiting for the relentless-but-slow revelation of 3100 frames of a Hugo-winning graphic story.
To answer the question more directly, I guess the dictionary on Mac OS Snow Leopard could be read in a way allowing a "yes" answer, but it's a bit of a stretch.
One of the folks who frequent this thread hosted a conference, for which I wrote a paper outlining the origins of this community, if you're interested. The early days were a lot like what is happening right now in the button on Reddit.

Just in case that page-top post wasn't meant in jest, you do realize that it's mildly offensive to enter someone's living room and ask the people assembled for book club Are you a cult? Now, a cult following, I might agree with. But just "cult" on its own is pretty much a perjorative these days. So I suspect that coming into a 2200-page thread and posting only that is meant to be some kind of baiting.

Man, are we becoming unmolpish? Do think about what we look like to a person who comes in cold and reads a page or two! This is not a good day for OTTerdom!

jobriath wrote:Afternoon, all. After reading your most recent page, I have to ask: Are you a cult?
First of all, welcome, Revealer the Recent! Yes, it can seem a little cultish, but we're a friendly bunch who have been Waiting For It since the beginning of Time. Waiting half an hour for a single pixel to change does odd things to people sometimes, and when it happens to two thousand of us night and day for over three months, certain revelations occur that might not have otherwise happened.

On the way however, we've developed some of our own little quirks, a little lexicon, a few religions, and an incredible outpouring of creative works, including a movie. Take a look at the film and you'll start to get an idea of what's going on.

We have a wiki cataloging some of what we've been about. (When it started I thought it was way overkill; I was wrong.)

Stick around, poke around, we don't bite! (Watch out for the green mindslugs though; some people pass them off as "protection hats" - don't be fooled!)

As for you other OTTers - you know who you are - shame on you!
(pulls out the Comfy Chair) Remember this? Be molpish, now!

jobriath wrote:Afternoon, all. After reading your most recent page, I have to ask: Are you a cult?

afternoon. Turns out, humans seem to be just as likely to make parody religions as regular ones.

I hope the plethora of responses didn't scare you away. This is kinda like if you walked into a book club, asked if it was a cult, and then everyone turned to you and said "no" simultaneously, in an unsettling monotone :P

talking about Thebutton being similar to our early stages: do you think that eventually, perhaps after the button counts down and the mystery is solved, that the people most invested in it will remain and become friends, like what happened with us? I predict not, because I think that's where our linear structure helps us. With our culture of "read it all", everybody's posts get included, and anyone who sticks around becomes recognizable, and usually hatted.

I don't know if I should bring this up, but I seem to have a deleted message in my inbox. What does that mean? Feel free to not answer if it was on purpose or whatever. I feel like I missed out on a free cruise or something.

Funny, I just had to look up what "cult" means. I'd say yes, for the nicer definitions of the word, and no, for the negative ones. It's a fuzzy word, eh? What aspects are you curious about?

I gotta disagree, ongomome. I'm pretty sure we know what punsaws are.

Aw, the waterskiing got cancelled due to rough conditions. Not really much of a surprise there though. A long time ago, Chronosdragon mentioned some heavy wind where he lives, saying the gusts were 80kph. A quick look at our weather page revealed that we had winds in Wellington at least that fast on ten days in the last month at the time Chronosdragon wrote that post. I took a screenshot, but it's on my disorganized sand. Summer wasn't that bad, but there's now been seven days in the last two weeks where gusts reached 80kph or faster (119 on Sunday). I wonder how Wellington convinced them to hold the 2015 World Water Ski Racing Championship here. Regardless, congrats Australians, looks like y'all are owning it.

Dear, Southern Hemisphere;
A post like that could sure use a link.

With a name like Wellington....

Fair 'nuff. :)

Here's our weather page. if you look about halfway down on it, you'll see Past Weather which has the last 30 days of wind, temp and rainfall. It is no wonder that I see this out my window.

The names refer to local buildings and suburbs.

Hmm. Let's see if I can find a good wind map... Will edit.
ETA: not the map, but how could I not post this find?

Speaking is different from posting, isn't it? Because with posting all you're really doing is typing, while with speaking,
