PUT RAPTORCAT ON DIP

Yes, but I'd have to do that again every time I move a piece. Moving a piece is a "click-drag-release" operation, and the release makes it go spinny.
I guess if I really wanted to do a jigsaw puzzle I'd disable the scroll feature of the mouse. It's easy enough to do: System Preferences > Mouse, click the little box next to "Scroll" and you're done. Repeat to set it back to normal. The real issue with me is that I do about 10% of a jigsaw puzzle and then decide I want to do something else for a while, then I never go back to it.

I am starting to write my analysis of the Beanish translation puzzle in Time, and you can read it here:

There's a lot more to write; most of the webpage is just an outline. You can read my additions as I add to it. But I encourage everyone to look at the puzzle on their own at first, so consider my

Such an obvious mistake! How did I miss that? :)

Hi, ggh! At first I thought you were saying it was TLW's 9th birthday, and I was confused. But then I figured out you meant the 9th as in the date. :) Anyway, happy birthday to TLW!

Hmm, yes, I did phrase that awkwardly - I have edited to correct it. :)

Meeting you and your lovely fellow was fantastic, June Bug! Way too short. And I talk too much. After your train was gone I kept thinking of all the questions I wanted to ask you - from stuff about your work and hobbies, to your experiences at OTTerCon, to - and for some reason, this one really gnawed at me - what Dixie was doing while you were riding the rails. I hope it's not too long 'til I see you again!

I hope y'all aren't too offended that I was thinking of you in the Corn Palace:

I just don't get to bust that out too often these days. And BlitzGirl has not been seen recently. :(

You absolutely did not talk too much, but it was much too short. The bf has been trying to find a time to go and see his brother--if we're that close, we'll definitely come and see you!

mrob, I have the same short attention span issue with puzzles, at least online. I have to do it in fits and starts. Still haven't finished that last one I created.

edited for typo.

Number seven? This is unprecedentedly tragic!

I started the first of the jigvitssagens but Outside interfered. The other two are in the queueueueueue. However, it makes me wonder why I feel the compulsion to do these puzzles that are presented here, but I don't have that same compulsion to copy an image (even a Time image) into that website to create a puzzle just for me to do. Somehow, the fact that it comes from an OTTer (or I make it for the OTTer community) makes the difference, even though the solving is the same.

Can someone please explain what interpretation they put onto whatever @lmjb1964 and @ucim were thinking about when they flung the words I quoted here out into the darknessOTTishness of our collective glorious chaos? (Hint: Answering the following questions might help me get a clue: What people/places/things own numbers 1 through 6? Does this number 7 change from time to time? Does it always increase or does it decrease too? How can I compute the present value of this number?)

I was confused by it but now I think it's the OTT's position on the list of the IXCT:

MAXIMUM NEATNESS YIELDS MAXIMUM AWEFULSOMENESS

Postby lmjb1964 » Fri Sep 11, 2015 7:22 pm UTC

Yes! balthasar wins the prize!$

Well, at least that was the meaning of the words that I flung into the OTT. I just assumed that was what ucim was referring to. Although, you know what happens when you assume:
Spoiler:
You're often wrong, and it confuses stuff.

Time had pretty consistently been in the top couple of spots since it started, and it's a reflection of OTT activity. Lately it's often been lower down on the list, which makes me anxious that the OTT is feeling neglected and needs some attention.

$Which in this case is the self-satisfaction he no doubt gained from successfully deducing the answer.

edited for adverbness.

THESE AREN'T THE THWAPSTICKS YOU'RE CH*RPING FOR

Postby mrob27 » Fri Sep 11, 2015 8:20 pm UTC

Oh, the forum topics list. Thanks, @balthasar_s (and @lmjb1964)! I feel dumb, because I used that page just yesterdip, looking for the thread about the recent "could care less" comic to see if got into a discussion of trolling, flame-wars, and meta-meta-intoleranceM.
I don't use those pages very often (there are lots of them, grouped into the forum's categories like "Serious Business") because my browser re-opens all tabs after a crash. So I can just leave the threads I care about open all the time.
At first I thought 7 was the number of responses to @tresoldi's Beanish survey, but then I saw @lmjb1964's reply and got confused.
There's also the number of "users browsing this forum" at the bottom of this page, but I think that number includes other threads, not just this thread.

Sorry about the CJK fullwidth spaces, @ChronosDragon! They're the only way I can get this forum to let me put whitespace at the beginning of a line. (Not true: I could use a transparent PNG image that takes up space, but I'd rather keep it all text.) Hmmm… it looks like you see little rectangles. Maybe I could put a normal space after each group of boxes.

  like this

 instead of like this

Oh, but I like your plain-text OTT, that's really nice!

 — mrob27 Image

MMeta-intolerance is intolerance of anything that can be judged to be intolerant. It is employed e.g. when free speech enables hate speech, as discussed in this New Yorker article. I don't know what meta-meta-intolerance would be, I just made it up… but maybe it's what happens when someone says they could[n't] care less about someone correcting their [mis-]use of the phrase "could[n't] care less" :D

Of course it's bad. The future is to the right.

I think it's okay. Mine effectively has its backoff_previous and backoff_latest both set to 0. It checks once per hour, but at a somewhat randomised time; and does not log in, nor use cookies, nor issue any request of any type other than "fora.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=101043&start=94680" with various start numbers, plus the same thing with the extra parameter "view=print". I also load each attachment once, and attempt to reload a randomly-selected small attachment every 5-10 minutes to discover if the server is still responding. This seems to be okay, based on a general sense over the past couple yips that the OTT's indexing and mirroring efforts are accepted/tolerated, plus the fact that my IP has never been blocked, and the lack of a robots.txt file.

DON'T CHANGE THIS MANUALLY UNLESS THE BOT'S STUCK

Speaking of which, I've been thinking: should bothasar_t respect robots.txt when fetching images? Though wget supports it, it's only used for recursive child downloads.
Of course, that'd mean a server is usually hit twice: once for the robots.txt, and again for the actual file. (Could improve with some kind of caching.)

If it was bad this would have to be bad too:

  • parameters with a numeric value:
    • -o - offset from the prievious page It determines where to start relative to the last page saved on the previous run (of the same ID). 0 means downloading the next page, 1 the same page, 2 the previous page, 3 the previousprevious page, and so on. If this is the first run, it will start from the first page. The default value is 1.
      [...]
    • -p - distance from the last page The bot will always stay at least this many pages away from the latest page on the thread. Default value is 0.

And because it isn't it isn't.

I din't think so. We're not mirroring their sites.
The bot does only what any browser would do when visiting the OTT.

I tend to agree with @balthabotbuildasar_s, as long as the amount of image-loading is less than what you'd do by checking the thread every day (or even a few times a day) in your browser.
But if you want to check, it's pretty easy: Once a day or so, see if there is anything at fora.xkcd.com/robots.txt and if so, you can inspect the file manually. For now, it's just a "404 Not Found".
