Speaking of jobs, I still haven't heard anything back from the interview I had, other than seeing my friend who's the HR person who told me that the faculty member who was hiring liked me but also like this other person. That was how long ago? I've even seen that faculty person a few times since then. It's ok, I'm kind of over it.

It was an image of Papadum, which, through the kinds of contortions that make BlitzGirl's day, sounds like "Popedum" (a decree was being followed). Papadum is a kind of blintz, girl. I thus took it as "for blitzers", despite not having counted them.

Jose is very very close (it helps to be a naturally punny person) but there was a riverish bit more to the Poppadoms Pun.
So to help, I'll add another hint from the newpage where it happened. :) ggh was responding to this post:

addams wrote:Oh! Dear!
Am I Page Pope?

Decree? Tell us a story.
The Story of your Most Adventurous Walk.

It was very sneaky. If ggh hadn't added the tinytext I probably would have missed it.

lmjb1964 wrote:Steakish find, BlitzGirl! Seems like an appropriate pun-ishment. (Does that count as a pun? Should I sneak out quickly?)

At this point PUNishment has been used so frequently onthread that it no longer trips the punsaw sensor!

It's sitting behind the dam, Waiting For It - following the First Commandment. That's pretty Holy, no?

Holy damn, I still don't get the pun.

ETA Am I just making it more complicated than it needs to be? It's just a play on holy water, because the sea is Holy because it's Waiting for It? Sorry to be that guy that's really thick and makes you explain a joke to death.

Unlike that one, it wasn't really a pun, per se. "Holy" (blessed by religion) is the intended meaning. In AotC, the clerecy set out to find Holy Water (analogy to OTC "fresh water"), and ended up finding its source. That water is behind a dam, and thus the clerecy is safe. For now. But the sea is big, and does what it wants. We know what happens to dams, and the sea is just following the First Commandment, which is blessed by religion. So, that is why we call it "Holy Water".

Thank you for the up lifting words, Jose.

oh, BlitzGirl I would miss so much, if not for you.

ggh wrote:I'll tell you about two related ones. I'm not sure if these are my Most Adventurous Walks, but I do like to remember them.

Walk 1. Spoilered for talking too much. tl;dr: I thought I'd get lost in the woods but I didn't.
Spoiler:
In 2004, my New Year's Resolution (I may have mentioned this before - sorry) was to do 12 things that frightened me. One of these was to get off my butt and finally do a week-long solo canoe trip in the Adirondacks. I was already living in New Zealand, and since this is kinda the land of bungy-jumping and zorbing and stuff, even though I'm not especially competent in the Great Outdoors, I think it gave me a kind of Adventure Street Cred with Dave, the wonderful owner of the canoe shop I rented the Bell Magicnot mine from, so he might have overestimated me when he designed the route I would take.

Part of the trip was to go from Tupper Lake to Hitchens Pond via the Bog River, a route he said a few people do each year (or was it a route someone does every few years?) Part of the River was impassable to canoe, so I'd have a longish carry to do to get past that area, and I could expect to see no one for a while during and after the carry until I hit another main trail.Hi Aluisio

In the shop, walking next to a river for a half mile sounded pretty straightforward, but out there... not so much. There wasn't much evidence of the trail that had once been there. The landscape did not allow me to walk within sight of the river, though fortunately, I could hear the distant sound of the rapids I was avoiding, and that was wonderful for keeping me going in the right direction, especially since I often had to backtrack when I'd hit something I couldn't get through.

I should mention that it was a wingish, wingish place to walk though, but a lot of that was obscured by the 16-foot canoe on my head. I'd find myself moving through increasing undergrowth and trying to power on through, with that false optimism that often accompanies limited visibilty. Then, the bramble would get so thick that by the time I'd surrender and backtrack, it was hard to find my footing. Also, manuevering with a thing that size sometimes made me feel like those dogs you see on youtube that try to carry long sticks through doors. Sometimes I'd fall down, and I'd have to figure out how to get up again.

I didn't always have a canoe on my head, and that was actually the root of my biggest fear. On my trip I had stuff - a canoe, a paddle, a large backpack, a bear bag full of food, and a bunch of assorted stuff that always seemed to be loose in the canoe. I couldn't carry it all in one go, so generally I'd make two trips: one with the canoe and bear bag, and one with the backpack, paddle and stuff. Sometimes, early in a trip when I still had a lot of food, I'd make three trips. I never wanted to be too far from all my stuff, so for all but the short carries, I'd break it into sections and leapfrog my gear down the trail. For this carry, I didn't want to be too far from my stuff, in case I had to make camp without having made it to the end, but I was really concerned that I'd put my stuff down somewhere in the woods and never find it again. I started taking notes: 20 paces to the turtle rock, 30 paces to fallen birch, 15 paces to K-shaped stick - pages of that kinda stuff. It wasn't foolproof - retracing my steps, sometimes "small rotten log" was not a unique destination, but in the evening, after six hours of leaving DNA evidence on all manner of pokey underbrush, I was at the place where I could get back on the river.

To the gentle howling of whatever howls up there, I set up my tent a bit uphill, and went down to the canoe for some food. Returning to where I thought I put the tent, it wasn't there. Mustard. Apparently I was correct in thinking it would be easy to lose stuff in the woods. After four trips from the river looking for it, I gave up and decided to sleep in the canoe. On the way back to it, I stumbled across the tent. Yay! When I lay down in it, wetness! - in the dying light I had put it on a patch of soft, but saturated moss. Didn't care. Slept.

not mine that is not my photo, but it's quite representative in a few regards
Hi Aluisio yes, that led to mostly topless paddling, feeling all connected to the water and to the forest around me. I was totally painting with all the colours of the wind. :)
Walk 2. Spoilered for the same reason. tl;dr: I stepped in mud and hurt my foot.
Spoiler:
The second walk was much like the first, in that it was a canoe carry - or actually a short series of them. I loved the trip so much in 2004, that I did another one in 2006, 2010 and 2011. They were all in the Adirondacks with similar canoes and all with routes designed by Dave. Someday, when the Little Wonder is old enough, I hope to return.

On Day 6 of the 7-day trip in 2010, I paddled through Mud Pond. The water itself is okay, but the carries leading to and from it earn the name. I had been there once before (some of my trips had overlapping portions) and on that trip one leg had suddenly sunk into the mud halfway up my thigh as though I stepped onto air. I had had trouble getting my leg out because of the suction on the sandal I was wearing. Eventually, I wriggled free of the sandal, happy to sacrifice it to the mud gods, but then managed to retrieve it, I forget how.

At any rate, in 2010, I was more experienced and left the sandals off coming and going from Mud Pond. In places, the muddy trail was supplemented with logs, boards and sticks to walk on, which was very helpful. Some of these bits of wood would get a little covered in mud though, so sometimes you'd be guessing where the supports were. I had just brought half my gear halfway to Ochre Pond, and had come back to Mud for the other half when I missed one of these boards. Again, my leg went down like I had just stepped on nothing, but halfway down, my foot hit something. A rock or a stick? It really smarted. A family was going in the other direction, and I asked them to call Dave and tell him I might be late to the take-out point, if and when they got to phone receptionvodafone but they never did. They were busy with their own stuff. They weren't mean or anything, but I was a little surprised how unconcerned they were about someone solo in the woods who was unable to walk. Usually, I think of us all as our brothers' keepers out there.

Anyways, it wasn't that bad. After the initial surprise, I could walk on it as long as I kept all my weight on the heel.yay I may have dragged the canoe a bit, which I am not proud of; canoes like that do not deserve to be dragged. Every once in a while the foot gave me a little jolt, but it was pretty well behaved. I finished the carry to Ochre, and at the next carry, these wonderful young folks I bumped into offered to carry my canoe to St Regis Pond, so I only had to walk that carry once instead of there and back and there again. The foot swelled up quite a bit and turned some colours, but I still got a good night sleep, thanks in large part to some gin I had with me for a perfectly good reason. The next day I made the carry to Little Clear and enjoyed a swim before paddling over to the take-out. I was only a little bit late. Another awesomeful trip was at an end. Dave saw my foot and had me sit by the lovely lake while he packed up everything.

Back in New Zealand, I got the foot x-rayed. It did not take a radiologist to see that there were two broken bones - they looked like how kids draw broken bones. For the next 6 weeks or so I got to walk around in a moon boot, looking really tough because I had walked like three miles out of the woods with a broken foot. That walk was much less adventurous than the first, but I like it because it makes me look a bit badass.... :)

vodafonePhone reception was like nothing the first time I went but it was being improved, so that many folks had reception in the more traveled areas. I was roaming with Vodafone from NZ, and their partners did not have much in the region. I almost never had reception.
yayThe way I was already heading to the take-out point was the fastest way out, so it wasn't like I had any choice.

Spoiler:
Phew, how that was a long section? Okay it wasn't that long, but very involved. Now that our heroes, the dauntless Cuegan, have begun to construct the most holy scaffolding to beat the rising tide, saying super-obvious stuff in the process about how the Sea Is So Salty (they must be children!), technical and involved discussion of a religious nature has ensued, and It's taken a bit longer to read. The third wip has given our chatters a break, and the Election of Cardinals, Archbishops, Knights of Time, etc. etc. is everywhere. That being said, have any Metropolitans been elected yet? If so, I'd like to apply. Those fofudyas don't don themselves! And the totally-nonexistent Rolexes!

More of the people here in the Present are also present in my slice of the past. Hi, past Laura!

BlitzGirl and Vytron continue their quests, the models of mine and of all the other people who have trodden this same path before. Thank you both, and I hope you appreciate this temporally-confused token. And unlike BlitzGirl, the first Newpix I saw was in the What? Period. I had no need to check the forums as nobody had figured anything out yet--only after the OTT culture had developed was there a need to check it out.

And the references to literature are a nice touch. I almost forgot about the Mabinogion. Though I only know literature second-hand anyway. I really should focus on the science more, I used to be a bit better at that.

I apologize for the terseness. These blitz logs don't quite have the same level of mysticism as mrob27 did in his, for which I congratulate him. The raptorcattish pace lends itself more to a riverish prose, as I'm sure taixzo and CasCat know.

And as a programming note, I got some of the Outside work done, and so I will return to normal speed through the wipend. Thanks for the support, everymolpy! I must go on.

Do you use any kind of probability weighting for the individual letters? Or for the words (beyond chained probability of wordn following wordn-1)?

why don't people get as irked by missing periods?

I love this place.
@thunk I'm so tired that your russian introduction completely convinced me. I was prepared to send condolences.

@ggh's limerick That was amazing :D

I actually did learn a lovely new (to me) poem form: Villanelles. It was hiding in a poem I already liked, Do Not Go Gentle etc.

It's a cool, simple meter that revolves around two repeating lines, which seems ripe for ottification. In fact, I woudn't be surprised if it had been done and I missed it or forgot. Here are the rules if anyone feels like trying. I might later (I always say this)
I made my avatar, Buffygirl hatted it, Yappo smileyed it and ggh taroted it!
I've changed, witnessing this thing so beautiful

Good luck on blitzing, katakissa, username5243, musthavebeenmykarma, iskinner, thunk, GnomeAnne, and quantized ! Keep the signposts coming, we love em in the now!

I'm twice lucky. I'll have to give that one a try. But first, the Commandment. (Sorry TheMinim!)

I somehow managed to get a second update in before coma-ing! This will be the first of my many heresies this update. According to mrob27, any blitzing is necessarily Heretical, because of the evolution in Holy Writ between Then and Now. I'm just doing my part.

I'm glad y'all keep learning stuff!

341/2474 leaves of Time leafed through (13.78%)
Current date is Departure 8.08

Spoiler:
So, Cuegan are at it again, building the Second Level of the Scaffolding, with a Queen behind Two Rooks, and making vague pronouncements that indicate that they neither know anything about the world they are in, nor things about proper building technique. And all the while, the Sea mysteriously keeps rising. and rising. and rising.

Religiously speaking, Sandmasonry got founded, then forgotten about, or something. From what I know about the Actual Masons, they really don't like strong language, or holes in pants (aside from the necessary three). So keep that in mind. Also Flado resigned or something.

Plenty of sorta off-topic discussion, as usual, but to whoever made a long and informative post about rolling easements, thank you. I really appreciate this, three yips on. Though the increasing length and detail of the posts does make it take longer to read.

Then, the thread gets sushi from somewhere, and I got to say, the local conveyor-belt place does a damn fine job of it. Sadly, I'm not local today, or most of the time. Also blah blah blah Dymaxion, because everything Fullerite needs the name Dymaxion. Also there's a discussion about how many distinct Newpix there could be, and it was apparently the "horribly large" 2^60000. To any googolologist (my hats off to them), that's ε.

And it came to pass there was a pronouncement from who I am calling False Randall I, and much like the False Dimitris they are named after, they are the bringers of Lies and Deceit. Shun the impostor.

Antipixels? Randall's psychohistory? Oppa... no, we're still not going there. But I did admire the references to Asimov's laughter when he heard that it Rained upon the Ocean. Also, OTTifications began somewhere here.

Automatically translating things into Angry German only works if you think all Germans are Nazis (lol). Following Goethe, it's probably better to translate things into Angsty, Sappy German (no pun intended). I mean, their Weltanschauung needs updating.

WIth some relation to the above, the Russian version of What If? has a nice layout, and an even nicer domain hack.

The last update's poetry edit needs to apologize to Ezra Pound, but won't because I'm not giving any Plancks to Mussolini fanboys right now.

On a final note, when true past Me, still a youngling, was reading this Newpix in Time, they were more concerned about the imminent Megapause of Hamsteak. Of course, that happened, and that was frustrating, but it was a blessing in disguise for them, as they had two whole mips to follow Cuegan in their Scaffolding and eventual Trek with less interference from Outside.

But now, the Coma.

Weird things happen.

I've been feeling weird for the last few weeks, so today I went to the doctor.
He told me that I had a fairly severe case of Zupp.
I still don't know what's wrong, because he started rolling around on the floor and laughing when I asked,
Spoiler:
"What's 'Zupp,' Doc?"
Shamelessly stolen from an online comic.
Purrr.

I couldn't help it; I reread a good ten pastpages via Time Travel because it's really easy to get sucked into the then-citement.
So many awesomeful people and posts. I sense some OTT Loopism going on, since addams just brought up this song:

Some things to tidy up here before I leave:
  1. Welcome Blitzgirl!
  2. Thanks to you all folks, the Readers, the Milliners, the Graphers, the Poets, the Lurkers, the Musicians, the Geologists, the Historians, the Linguists, the Imagicians, the Clergy, the Knights, the Archivists and the Whatnot (I hope I did not forget anyone), it's been a blast.
  3. Blast On!
You are definitely more eloquent than I was in my previous post. On the other hand, it does sound like the long lost verse of Kermit the Frog's Rainbow connection:

One day we'll find IT
That OTC connection
The Readers, the Milliners, the Graphers,
the Poets, the Lurkers, the Musicians,
the Geologists, the Historians, the Linguists,
the Imagicians, the Clergy, the Knights,
the Archivists and the Whatnot and me
All of us under IT's spell you know that IT is probably magic

...

Also, I want to quote this haiku:

Good to see you Now. :D

Knowing what I know now about the Sea and what happened in Time, I am completely terrified of seahugs.

Also: hi. I miss you xuys. I crept out of the basement many many months ago and ventured in to the pretty molpish outside world. *gasp* -- but I've been thinking about doing a lil blitz ketchup since so many of us are still here!! We're weird, right? (see wut I did thar)
