And so it is confirmed that The Advent is a loopist. An awesomeful loopist, but once again we come full circle, only to arrive where we started, but not be the same person anymore, because of the experience of the journey. Reflected, fittingly, in the poem etched on the back, in the new perspective on the beach, and in the icon of The Advent xiself.

All of us are changed by the journey, and are fortunate to experience it anew, differently, every time the yip turns anew.

There remains but a dix or two before the Dawn. Will there be another image? Another poem? Another piece of enlightenment?

We'll just have to wait for it.

TheAdvent, how do you find these poems? One that talks about raft, one that talks about "We who wait," and a poem called Time that talks about a Sea and a flood (proof that Shelley was some sort of proto-OTTer). And where did you find this:

MAŁP is the genitive plural of "monkey" or "ape". It would serve the same grammatical role as "raspberries" in the other title: so for example, that cassette might be saying LAS SZCZĘŚLIWYCH MAŁP which would mean "Forest of happy monkeys". You can guess what SUPERMAŁP means :)

To me, it looks more like maybe TALP than MALP.

There is a possibility, actually.
I have a redundant copy of bsta on which I'm testing changes so I don't break the actual thing.
I made it in such a way that I can have multiple independent copies of bsta without a very big effort.
So I can make a copy of everything related to bsta, in the initial state and give a link to it to someone after a request by PM.
This would allow doing things on the rediundant tape interface without mustarding the main one.

Me, me, I want to play with the tape recorder too!

A brief reminder that you may use mrob.com/time/replay to view Time in real-time, as it were. Soon the "Time is about to start" screen will appear and then, 48 shortpix later at midnip Randall-Daylight-Time, we'll get Frame 1.

As presently given it is best for big screens, but if anyone would like something with minimal extra stuff, perhaps better suited for phones or what-not, let me know.

“Any fool can get into an ocean...”
by Jack Spicer

Any fool can get into an ocean
But it takes a Goddess
To get out of one.
What’s true of oceans is true, of course,
Of labyrinths and poems. When you start swimming
Through riptide of rhythms and the metaphor’s seaweed
You need to be a good swimmer or a born Goddess
To get back out of them
Look at the sea otters bobbing wildly
Out in the middle of the poem
They look so eager and peaceful playing out there where the water hardly moves
You might get out through all the waves and rocks
Into the middle of the poem to touch them
But when you’ve tried the blessed water long
Enough to want to start backward
That’s when the fun starts
Unless you’re a poet or an otter or something supernatural
You’ll drown, dear. You’ll drown
Any Greek can get you into a labyrinth
But it takes a hero to get out of one
What’s true of labyrinths is true of course
Of love and memory. When you start remembering.

Wait for it.

Was wondering if the NP count to the start of Time on mrob's replay page should be in shortpix or longpix? It's in longpix at present, but Time will start off in shortpix of course..

I figure it's since most of Time was spent with longpix, and to encourage more fervent observance of the first commandment.

Rakhal wrote:Was wondering if the NP count to the start of Time on mrob's replay page should be in shortpix or longpix? It's in longpix at present, but Time will start off in shortpix of course..

Hi @Rakhal! That's a good point. I think it depends on your perspective:
  If you imagine that you have "travelled back in time" and are literally in the past waiting for Time to start, and if you wish to avoid anachronistic words (perhaps to be properly understood by the people living in the Aforewhen), then it would have to just say "hours" because there was not yet any concept of shortpix or longpix.
  On the other hand, if you are in the real present time, and looking through a window on the past, or if you're travelling in your TARDIS and only speaking with others who are in on the secret, then I think it should use "nopix" which is what I've been using by default (nopix instead of "newpix" because alas, there are no more pix.)
  You're suggesting a third possibility, which is to retroactively extend the "oldpix" interval backwards into the past, kind of like the use of a Proleptic Gregorian calendar. My newpixometer conversion script indeed does this (here shown converting from UTC to "newpix"):

Code: Select all

  : newpixometer 20130325.0100
 Date 20130325.0100 == Newpix -7.0000
  : newpixometer 20130325.0200
 Date 20130325.0200 == Newpix -5.0000
  : newpixometer 20130325.0300
 Date 20130325.0300 == Newpix -3.0000
  : newpixometer 20130325.0359
 Date 20130325.0359 == Newpix -1.0333
  : newpixometer 20130325.0400
 Date 20130325.0400 == Newpix 1.0000
  : newpixometer 20130325.0401
 Date 20130325.0401 == Newpix 1.0333
  : newpixometer 20130325.0500
 Date 20130325.0500 == Newpix 3.0000
  :

I also used an idea suggested by someone on the OTT, which is that "there is no Newpix 0" the same way that "there is no year 0" in the common AD/BC year numbering used on the Outside. I think I got the idea from the newpix-converter userscript, which I inherited from @Pikrass and @Smithers.
  I'm inclined to use the first of the options I listed above, i.e. fantasy time-travel mode, using contemporaneous terminology. Therefore, I'll change it to "hours", for example "4.31 hours until Frame 1".

Hi everyone! It's awesomeful to see you all still otting! I guess it takes a Timeversary to drag me up the basement steps.

Did you like the advent calendar? I wanted to do something treeish for the 5th anniversary of Time, but I knew if I barged in being all blitzgirly I wouldn't be able to focus very well. But now that the project is done I can be as SREEE as I like! Image

I suspect a few of you guessed that it was me, so thanks for not telling! And I'm sorry if I disappoint anyone with the revelation that The Advent is not a true Revealer the Recent (I call the account Adventbot in my head, even though it's not a bot). Thank you to Jose for the existence of the calendar, which was my inspiration. It was a seaish amount of fun to create the project, and molpish to see the OTT respond.
And above all, it's wowterful to be in the Present again!

The Garden by Moonlight
by Amy Lowell

A black cat among roses,
Phlox, lilac-misted under a first-quarter moon,
The sweet smells of heliotrope and night-scented stock.
The garden is very still,
It is dazed with moonlight,
Contented with perfume,
Dreaming the opium dreams of its folded poppies.
Firefly lights open and vanish
High as the tip buds of the golden glow
Low as the sweet alyssum flowers at my feet.
Moon-shimmer on leaves and trellises,
Moon-spikes shafting through the snow ball bush.
Only the little faces of the ladies’ delight are alert and staring,
Only the cat, padding between the roses,
Shakes a branch and breaks the chequered pattern
As water is broken by the falling of a leaf.
Then you come,
And you are quiet like the garden,
And white like the alyssum flowers,
And beautiful as the silent sparks of the fireflies.
Ah, Beloved, do you see those orange lilies?
They knew my mother,
But who belonging to me will they know
When I am gone.

That's a relief! I was afraid the use of poetry in particular might be too obvious. The only deliberate (and very, very riverish) hint I left was starting with the "Photo of a Girl on a Beach" poem. And much later, the poem used for Language mentioned lightning, but that was only a molpish coincidence.

There were more of the intentional OTT nods, like the reference in the River poem to the water coming from a faucet.

Happy Timeversary!

[Blindpost]

Greetings from far away on occasion of a double Timeversary: In my Blitzrocket, I'm experiencing the fourth one, and according to my calculations, it's the fifth Timeversary for y'all in the Present.

In celebration of this, I blitz-wrote a riverish Hotdog:
MolpyUp!

Image

You can download it here: http://www.peter.gerwinski.de/ott/MolpyUp.zip

It's a Python program Image, so it should run everywhere. To RUN it, type python molpyup.py in your shell. I tested it successfully on all computers in my Blitzrocket. Since none of them is running MS Windows, I cannot give you precise instructions how to make it run there (sorry), but you need to install a Python interpreter and the pygame library (type pip install pygame to install).

It's a riverish program (just 168 lines of code), and just a beginning. I have several ideas how to extend this hotdog. If you have more, be welcome to tell me, and wait for it. Or help me to implement them. Or both.

[ETA: installation hints, clarifications]
[ETA2: Reveal how to RUN the program. Thanks, Balthasar, for the beesnake report!]

Hi BlitzGirl! Awesomeful AdventONGs! I also had no idea it was you and at the same Tim kept wondering where were you and whether you'll visit us on the Timeiversary. And you did it with the Advent. Molpish!

It's been five long yips (Wait what? Five Yips already? They were rather short then) since our creator, the GLR, separated the white from the black and created TIME which spawned this wonderful community that is the OTT. I've spent most of my time in the recent yip or two in the basement but I'll never forget how awesome it was is. So thank you everyone for keeping it alive.

We have one wip until the April. I wonder what Randall will come up with this time. Please be it Time 2, please be it Time 2...

Sustainabilizer made a game!
Just like that.
Apparently, you can just write 168 lines to achieve a simple but playable game.

Interesting coincidence.
This week I was thinking about trying to start finding out what I need for making a game.
I was having some game ideas for something bsta-related.
But not the required informations to actually do it.
So I thought maybe it is a good time to learn something.
Even if what I'll manage to do will be not much more than "a single-frame guy moving around some empty place and not really knowing what to do" it would still be a success.

When I tried to run the game for the first time, what I did after unpacking was:

Code: Select all

chmod +x molpyup.py
./molpyup.py

Before it crashed it made 3 screenshots in postscript format...

Because the game starts with:

Code: Select all

import pygame
from pygame.locals import *
import sys
import random

and "import" is a screenshot program from imagemagick and "from" is a program which will "print names of those who have sent mail".

BlitzGirl wrote:I suspect a few of you guessed that it was me, so thanks for not telling!

!
BlitzGirl is the author of the advent calendar.
I did not expect this.
But I didn't really try to find out who it could be.
Now, when knowing this,
yes it makes much sense that it was you.
Thank you for the pictures and words.

In one post I wrote that one frome could have been artificially created.
Was this correct?

Also,
5 YEARS of Time!
So I'm here 5 years already (ok, a bit less since I joined later)?
That's a big piece of time.
That's as much time as I spent at university.
A lot changed for me since then.

I finished university, and found an FFS.
I bought my own place to live and made it into a nice place to live.
I cut my hair and it grew back.
I destroyed 3 laptops.
I learnt new things,
started running my own server and wrote programs to run on it that I wouldn't expect I could be able to make before.
made a story-shaped thing and started another one.

And after all this the ott is still here, and is still a place I go to every day to read words.
I never stayed so long in an online place before.

Edited to fix mistake. 168 lines, not 168 games...

Hello Laura, Adventgirl, and others. I'm afraid I have been too basemented to see much of the Advent calendar, but I liked what I saw so far!

Today is also Waffle Day in Sweden. Hm, I think I have told you that before in the thread. It's actually the day of Our Lady (Mary), but with sloppy pronunciation and a little folk etymology, it evolved into Waffle Day. (Vårfrudagen -> Våffeldagen, right, Svenman?)
