The loopiest loops will always outrun the leggiest legs.

On flat terrain at least, anyway. Being leggy tends to be more useful in terrain with considerably varied topography...

And since I am Popecat once more, I decree:

All posts on this NP shall contain redundancy!

Per decree, all posts on this NP shall contain redundancy!

Or perhaps redundakitties... or even redundantly redundant reredundakitties! Who knows?

I learned today that in this city it is not a good idea to be bikeless even for a single day:

My FFS is next to the train station.
I went to visit my parents for Easter.
Usually I go by train and I take my bike with me to the train.
Then I go by bike from the station to their home.

This time I didn't want to take my bike there.
I expected the train to be very crowded because of all the people going to holidays (and it was)
so it would be less problematic to go without the bike.
Also I was going with my sister and our dad could pick us up from the station by car.

Usually in such cases I go to FFS by bike
then I leave the bike in FFS basement
and then I enter the train.
So when I go back to work to the city after a weekend I can go home on bike.

This time I didn't want to do it this way because I had some additional bags to take.
So I left the bike at home and went to the station by tram.
Because it was a little bit more comfortable, I thought.

Today I came back to the city by train and went directly to FFS.
Because my bike was not there I had to return home by bus.

But a tree fell down.
It fell down in front of an important bridge.

There were big traffic jams in the city.
It took me 1 hour and a quarter to go to my home.
Actually, it would be a little faster to go there on foot!

(Or on bike but I couldn't)

Lesson learned today:
In this city,
always have a bike available.

This story is not related, actually.
I had to share it anyway.

For that heretical statement you are sentenced to to the Comfy Bike. This is like the Comfy Chair, but you google image search "wheel" and attach whatever you find to the comfy chair. Extra penance if Oreos or donuts are in the search results.

Such delightful replies to be found within this needle-pulled thing! I laughed most rightly when reading Jose's statements. Most delightful!

Although if something is delightful is it actually heaviful? Or even heaviempty! Perhaps heavilacking, although that sounds more like a hobby or a lumberjack event.

I like this newpix a lot. I think it gets eclipsed by the ominous dialogue exchange a fewpix back ("I don't think it's going to stop"). But in this one, Megan looks up for the first time since Cuegan returned to the frame, toward the castle. And soon she will be addUNG the final flags.

I think this might get you the Scrumptious Comfy Bike, which is the comfy chair but with random scrumptious donuts stuck to it.

You can do that. They just have to be attached to the comfy bike while you are doing it.

Since you would be eating both wheels, you will be rebikeful.

BlitzGirl wrote:Lumberjack Event also sounds like a backwoods band trying to be as cool as Vital Hotdog Function.
No band could be as cool as Vital Hotdog Function, except possibly one with yappobiscuits in it. He would have a Vital Yappo Function.

Greetings from the basement!

I just re-watched the OTC with some re-reading of the OTT. My heart rate rose just before Lucky's attack, just before the arrival to the beanies' castle and the whole Rosetta episode was of course very exciting too. (Thank GLR there is a wiki with all the dialogue!)

I will print one Time T-shirt for myself and for that I will order a signed print from the xkcd shop. (Maybe the first frame.) While ordering, I'll ask Randall to write "I waited for it" or something suitable on a piece of paper, so I can print that on the shirt too - with his permission.

The real reason for posting this is this question: does anyone here have the Hugo Awards speech as a video file? I found only one recording (the one mentioned in the wiki) but I can't fast forward it... Maybe I'll just have to wait for one hour and a half to get to the good part. ;)

EDIT: I found a way. Just watch the actual video file at http://vod64.ustream.tv/iphash/0/1/51/5 ... .15.0%2F24 and you can jump directly to 1:28 or so.

R.A.Z.O.R.* Field Report
Agent: lmjb1964
Date: 27 April, 2019H

Our unit is currently experiencing one of the worst onslaughts of raptors and zombies that we have seen in some time. They are coming at us from all sectors, with no relief in sight. As a result, casualties in the field have been high. There is an epidemic of ATW (Acute Time Withdrawal), with its accompanying BDS (Bsta Deficiency Syndrome), and of course PTSD (Phys-frame Total Scarcity Disorder). Morale is low. I, for one, have taken to gazing longingly at the Time magnets on my refrigerator, much like a solder in a World War II movie might gaze a photo of his girl back home, wondering when, or if, they will meet again.

This report must be brief, as our unit(1) has heard reports of hostiles gathering at a place referred to as "FFS." We will be mobilizing to try and neutralize that threat as quickly as possible.

END REPORTHi

*Raptor and Zombie Observation and Relocation. A top-secret government agency. I thought there might be some here who weren't around when this has been discussed before.

HereticaIt's a government agency, so I have to use heretical dates in my report.

I'm not sure what I think of this, but I think we otter go to Japan.

Spoiler:
Last Week Tonight creates its own otter mascot for a city in Japan that has too many, or too few. Perhaps R.A.Z.O.R. should investigate? I think there's more to this than meets the yey.
Also, not enough fish. :)

And welcome back superluminal! Glad to see you made it out of the basement!

What?
You mean there is no need for a moon buggy?
Why couldn't you have told it before we started working on our buggy?

But that's genius level engineering - I'll leave it to Baltimore.
Is this a challenge?
Is this nerdsniping?

Whatever, let's do it anyway.
Let's try to see how this theory works.

So this is what we are trying to achieve:
Image
(two objects moving in the same direction are pulled to each other by "gravity")
(V is movement, G is gravity)

> Moving cars generate an F field circularly perpendicular to its motion,
So, it looks like this:
Image
Actually, there are two possibilities. The "F-field" (whatever it is) can be like on the above drawing but can also be in opposite direction.
Which one to chose?
It doesn't matter!
The end conclusions will be the same. Even if we make an assumption here, soon we will have to make a second one and they will cancel out.
So, let's describe the relationship between the movement and the F-field by the "thumb up" rule (right hand):
Image

> cars moving through generate a G field perpendicular to the F field and to their motion. The G field causes the attraction between the cars

Ok, so let's illustrate the effect of the right vehicle moving through the field generated by the left vehicle:
Image
And of the left vehicle moving through the field generated by the right vehicle:
Image

Again "perpendicular to the F field and to their motion" gives two possible, opposite directions but "causes the attraction between the cars" leaves only one possibility.
So, let's describe this relationship between the directions of movement, F field and gravity by the three finger rule (right hand):
Image
(this is the "second assumption" I mentioned before)
Just align your three fingers perpendicular to each other and you know everything.

Ok, we just described the theory.
Now, let's move to the cool stuff.
Predictions.

According to the theory, what will happen
> if you create two spinning objects tied together with some sort of frame?

this, maybe:
> you might be able to have the F field forces cancel out except for one G field vector pointing up.?
Or something else?

Let's start with one spinning object.
(also known as "wheel").
Using the "thumb up" rule we find out how the F field looks like around the wheel:
Image

The field will point in one direction inside the wheel and opposite direction outside the wheel.
If we have two wheels we will also have two such fields:
Image
(I assume that both wheels are rotating in the same direction. That's because both are rolling on the same ground)

So, what is the effect of one wheel rotating in the field of the other one?
Let's look at the rear wheel (for the front wheel the final result will be the same).
The front wheel's F field enters the rear wheel from the left and points to the right:
Image

Using the three finger rule we can determine that the gravity will point
Image
...to the inside.

So all the gravity cancels out and doesn't pull the wheel in any direction (but holds it together, fighting the centrifugal force)?
Not exactly.
We expect the field to be stronger closer to the wheel.
So the actual result will look more like that:
Image
It's stronger closer to the middle,
If we add all those vectors we get this:
Image
Gravity will actually try to pull the wheels apart!
(but not very sttrongly - only the difference between both sides of the wheel plays a role here)
The total effect on the whole device is, however, zero. Both vectors cancel out each other.

So, interesting but disappointing.

But!
That's not the whole story!

You see, if a wheel is spinning on top of some ground, it is actually moving forward.
(that's what wheels are for, after all)
Image
So we also have to check what how it will look for a forward-moving wheel in this F field.
Image

Using the 3 fingers rule we see that gravity will point perpendicular to the ground, but downwards.
Image
So the whole device will actually be pulled downwards.
Image

So even if we do all these crazy tricks with the new physics of movement-circular-gravity, gravity is still, as always, pulling us down.

So it looks like we do need a moon buggy after all.

Interestingly, in the video game "Grand Theft Auto V", motorcycles and bicycles do have a phantom force pulling downward that increases with speed. If you flip a bike upside down in midair while going fast enough, it can even fly. Perhaps we have figured out the physics behind this phenomenon!

I know there are some Javascript programmers in the OTT. Should we (and by "we" I mean "they") make a "Molpydome"?

I could do that, if someone has a collection of emojis to run through it. (I don't know if someone else is already working on a Molpydome in the future, but thought I'd offer.)
