The dike may simply be built out of wet sand, but the sea may be made from oil. Since that would prevent seeping through it would work.

Or the dike may be sand wetted with a semencancerbaby repellent stuff. Then the semencancerbabies will not seep through. Might I suggest it's something filled with an antioxidants? Since they repel cancer.

Maybe it's a sea of quicksilver. Which would raise the issue on "Swimming". People like (maybe!) you and me with a mass density of roughly 1 g/cm³ would most probably having fun trying to stand (half the calves under the surface, but very small friction to keep the balance against). But I've not enough knowledge about both the mass density of stick figures and their center of mass. They don't tend to have much muscles on the bones and may sink in up to the waist breast*... well. I thought about that, but you wouldn't be able to build a sandcastle out of hydrophobic sand. Try building one out of dry sand. Unless you mix it with a suitable liquid (water is the most common one) it will not work.
To quote Zap: You win again, gravity!

It could be oily sand and a water sea. But then I assume the oil has the tendency to try and float on the water, thus leaving the sand (assuming it would be possible to build a sandcastle out of oily sand. Anyone from the area of Fort McMurray?)

Of course it could be hydrophobic sand and superglue.

Please don't do that. You're not linking to the current newpix, but to a URL that always points to the latest frame.
This confuses people who read this an hour or more later (like BlitzGirl); and also causes extra load on c.xkcd.org for every refresh of this forum page, which already has trouble keeping up.
You should link directly to the newpix URL, in this case: http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/time/47af6d ... b2aa33.png

That's really weird. I right clicked, selected "Copy Image URL" and then pasted that into my reply. That's always given me the Newpix URL before.
In any case, I've fixed my post.

edited to remove the last part of the incorrect URL, since the original post is now fixed.

Possible, but no. I was thinking more along the lines of the sand itself showing symptoms of hydrophobia.

Time has gone wibbly wobbly on me. The Comic updated, I copied the image URL, pasted into my reply, but saw that it was once again time.png, so went back, and found that the Comic had reverted. I saw it go back and forth a few times before it finally settled.

Just guessing, but it could be this:
If you (re-)load xkcd.com/1190, it loads the page with:

Code: Select all

<img src="http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/time.png" title="Wait for it." alt="Time" />

The Javascript¹ will, after a while, change the src of this img to a specific newpix URL. So, if you copy the URL before that happens, you get the wrong URL, and after, you get the correct URL.

¹: The page has Javascript? Why hasn't anyone mentioned this before?? 8-)

Psst! Blitzgirl! I've journeyed from the future to warn you - in about ten pages you're going to run into a bunch of Holy Grail quotes. I just want to reassure you... it'll pass. The Spanish Inquisition keeps popping up because nobody ever seems to expect it, but the unladen swallow thing will be short-lived.

Also, if you're worried about the number of titles you're gaining, and the thickness of the beatification paperwork binder, don't sweat it... you can appoint lackeys to fill out a lot of it.

Cheering you on!
