Back from Coma and Outside business. Following the lead of several other threadposters, I'll walltext some responses to my skimming:

rmsgrey wrote:"A reason for everything"? They must be scientists!

My thoughts exactly. In the civilization metaphor, we'd be getting to the scientific inquiry stage. Say, mid-1600s? We've got the simple machines (pulley system), so next should be steam-powered things :D

The Next Level. NP 704.

At last! I have spotted the signpost that spotted the signpost that spotted the initial signpost I left for myself when first I began my travels.

No wonder she's taking so long, she's trapped in Zeno's paradox! Next she'll have to get to the fifth-level signposts, then the sixth-level, then the seventh-level, all the while getting closer and closer to caught up but never quite there. Blitzgirl! It's imperative that you not fall into the paradox!

Too true. The sea will have to get halfway up, then halfway up that, then halfway up the remaining distance. They'd be fine for ages!

<rant> File extensions are uncontrolled. "exe" is interpreted by the OS as a file that runs, rather than one which calls some app to open it. But since the user can change extensions at will, any type of file can be given any TLE (three-letter extension, which doesn't have to be three letters long, e.g. 'epub' (which is really a 'zip' anyway) ), or have no extension at all. When said file extension doesn't match the file metadata (if any), the OS or the called app will complain. It's a stupid system. </rant>

Indeed, my first introduction to this phenomena was when I noticed that Portal map packages were zips renamed to bmz. Internet Explorer read the metadata instead of the file extension, which caused it to save as a zip. Now MIME types, on the other hand, are much less mutable. I think files should be categorized based on MIME type and not some arbitrary string of letters in the name that can be changed on a whim.

Once Blitzgirl is only a few pages behind, I propose we post only newpix until she arrives, so that she's not quoting posts from five pages ago that are just old enough to be one's we've all already heard, but not old enough to be an antique.

Even if their sandcastles became the most grandiose constructions of sand imaginable, I'm sure Randall would wipe them out and give Megan and Robball something new to do, if it were his will to continue Time indefinitely.

Somehow I managed to lose the train of the thread in the last newpage. But I can only assume that is appropriate.

I personally have been doing some armchair analysis of the file hashes, and have yet to come up with anything clear, other then they are obviously hashes generated on the server side.

Which also has some really interesting traits to point out:
  • The hashes appear to be the same for both the original and the noted modified files
  • For the NewPix that were added when the script updated every 30 minutes and the pix transitioned to every hour, they had the same image with 2 different hashes. Yet the files are exactly the same.

I guess I can wear it for a while, though. It wasn't specified how long I would have to wear it to have a most awesome future, right?
(And isn't buffygirl in charge of hatting around here?)

Ok i've set up a big surprise welcome party for BlitzGirl on Page 380 and Page 381
To help make it special for her we just need some people who posted on this page after the first site of the new girl arriving to go back and do some reinvention of Time using edits.

XonqNopp: your prediction that it's BlitzGirl can stand but you could add more to later posts
mscha: you can edit your Post comparing BlitzGirl's old picture with the new arrival by changing it to her current image which now has the beret now. And you can of course change the text a bit as well.

Then everyone else can go wild welcoming Blitzgirl to the comic. I was in a Coma at this time so can't do it myself. Make sure you offer her some cake etc and make her welcome.

A cool idea to make it more real is to wait for others to do an edit and then Quote that edit in one of your later posts! This may mean people have to do a couple of re edits as others add things.

Also there is a second newpix on page 381. When she is revealed even better so you can add some more edits there as well.

Please DO NOT Quote this post as since it is a surprise party I may have to edit out this post later...

Edit: Thanks Caswallon and mscha for your edits so far!!! the setup has begun!. Someone can quote Cawallon's prediction to make it TRUE.

Do your own analysis of when she'll catch up.

And now...
Coma Time!
G'Night all, happy waiting.

Oh good, this was posted at a time when I'm actually on, I missed it the last couple. Looks to me like her curve is asymptotic with the graph - a slant asymptote, to be specific. This would be problematic due to the nature of asymptotes (See my previous comments on paradoxical posting) except we have a discrete unit here. She can consider herself "caught up" when she's within 5 or fewer pages, or if she wanted to be really obsessive about it, 1 page. Does anyone have a compendium of the data so I can do further analysis, or will I have to find BlitzGirl's posts myself?

Its really easy because if you click on blitzgirl's name on one of her posts and then click on 'view all of blitzgirl's posts button on the side it shows the first bit of all her posts. And she always puts the data you want at the very top of each post so its all there for you.

here is some of my old data to get you started:

I made this

Edit: Ok, made some progress on my little project, it's alright, not perfect, but I could mess around with it all night, so good enough. Now all I need is a 2:25 video of Time, preferably with a small amount of blur, preferably ending with Megan's coma, and preferably with a slowdown/speedup centered around 1:39... does anyone have an easy way to make something like that, or how would I go about putting that together myself in a timely manner...

Wait for it! Now with Even More Litany!

Spoiler:
The Litany of The Waits:
Leader: Later!
People: Bye!
Leader: Wanna swim?
People: Yeah!
Leader: Pffthh
People: *cough*
Leader: You ok?
People: Just got some in my mouth.
Leader: Any idea where the river is now?
People: Still pretty far out. It's actually retreated a little this week.
Leader: I don't understand what the sea is doing.
(All observe a meditative silence)
Leader: I don't think we can build it much taller than this.
People: It's been fun, though!
(The leader makes a sipping sound)
Leader: Pfffth Pthuh! Yuck.
People: I've had worse.
Leader: Guess one of us should climb down.
People: Yeah.
Leader: The sea is rising.
People: Yeah.
Leader: Sea level rises and falls, right? It's changed before.
People: Not this fast.
Leader: The river hasn't even reached the sea yet.
People: The river is small. The sea is big.
Leader: How big?
People: I don’t know.
(Several beats of silence are observed.)
Leader: Does it Rain on the Sea?
People: I don't know; if it does it seems like a waste.
Leader: It rains in the hills where the river comes from, right?
People: Sure.
Leader: Are there other rivers?
People: I don't know.
Leader: There must be other rivers.
People: Otherwise the sea would dry up.
Leader: Maybe it's coming out of the ground.
People: Does that happen?
Leader: I don't know.
(Another moment of silent reflection.)
Leader: I don't know how the sea works.
People: I don't know how anything works.
Leader: I don't think it's going to stop.
People: The sea can't just make more of itself forever.
Leader: It can do whatever it wants. It's the sea.
(Contemplation of this revelation)
Leader: There must be a reason. There's a reason for everything.
People: Yeah.
Leader: But it's not always a good reason.

(lengthy pause? collection plate passed? hymns sung? speaking in tongues???)

Leader: There must be other rivers.
People: Maybe something is wrong with them.

Well one Idea is to try taking a gif someone has made of the whole comic and just convert this into a movie file somehow. Then any full featured video editing suite can add blur or change the speed of time easy enough.

River: That's a popular theory.

That's something I was thinking about, though the places to view the comic that I know of actually cycle through the frames instead of using a gif. I shall go spelunking through the thread for a bit.

Maybe someone took the image address from xkcd.com (time.png), rather than the hashed image.
EDIT: pope'd yet again!

"There must be other rivers. Maybe something is wrong with them."

Maybe they think rivers are supposed to suck water away from the sea?

Or maybe, in their world, rivers really do suck water out of the sea? Since the one river they know of "actually retreated a little this week," maybe the rivers are malfunctioning for some reason.

Or the "other rivers" are other comics and what is wrong with them that they don't have almost 400 pages of discussion. (Which now that I think about it is a really egocentric perspective, really why would we think this thread is the most important thing in the world?) Or the sea could be like the Black Sea, which is connected to the Mediterranean by the Bosphorus?
