Nope. It's just really clever AI. Look, if I was able to do this (http://kieryn.com/xkcd-time/) in a couple of hours then a genius like Randall given a day or two...

Why am I only just now seeing this??? That's awesome

Thanks :-)

Actually, I would not be surprised if Randall hasn't automated his entire xkcd operation by now. He probably has programs that scan these forums and the web for comic ideas and generates them automatically. Heck, it was probably a program that came up with the idea for this very comic AND ITSELF created the script / AI to generate it.

Yeah, that is weird.

I think that is simply required for the proper flow of conversation...

The position of the text, yes, but the line going off screen terminates too high, it should curve down and be closer to the water surface. Either he is standing on something, or is possibly very far away, but then in that case how would she hear him?

There's a third option you ignored: there is no significance to exactly which pixels are occupied by a line that is used just to indicate the speaker in a medium where there is no facial feature to give away who is talking.

If that was the case, why not just have his text come from the left all the time, and hers from the right. Or randomly position dialog. Heck, why even care about what order in time you present dialog at all? Of course there is significance!

I have read this multiple times and still can't make any sense of it.

The line is going to the right because the character is (was) off-screen to the right. A line to the left would make no sense. I can't figure out why you would suggest that.

All the line needs to do is point in the general direction of the speaker - the level of specificity you are demanding is unnecessary, just like the person way back who insisted it couldn't be sand because they weren't using buckets to move water, or something. That's why I said "there is no significance to exactly which pixel is occupied" - that doesn't mean the line can be pointing to just anywhere.

The line went where it did probably because it was crowded in that corner of the screen and it looked less cluttered that way, but I don't really know and we've been given zero reason to suspect it is significant. In fact, we've been given ample reason to believe it is not - they said "let's go for a swim," not, "let's go check out that [whatever object/landmass you think is there] just off-shore."

I did see Kieyn's link when he first posted it. I don't understand fully how it works, but I use algorithms when I'm writing music, and they're good at doing something repetitively and iteratively, which is fine for the sandcastle building and the position of the stick figures in frames with no text. However, writing one that would not only come up with an appropriate and semantically meaningful series of English words but then also place those words in a scene where they made sense would take a lot of work. I'm not saying that Randall hasn't used algorithms to make some parts easier, but I don't think the whole thing is being controlled by an algorithm. There seems to be at least some human intuition involved.

I think I am against them being in a strange environment... You guys figured whatever was in her mouth was not normal... However seawater, with its extreme salinity, is rather nasty to accidentally gulp down. I would cough and spit if I accidentally swallowed some or even got some in my mouth, And knowing Megan's eccentricity, I wouldn't be surprised if she just didn't like the salt water in her mouth.

I'm curious if this thread will surpass the "Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release Discussion"thread we had over at Droid Forums.... 6504 posts over a little less than a month of waiting for that damn phone. Of course, it got the point we were posting just for the sake of posting and had long periods of off topic discussion. I'm betting if this lasts at least another 72-120 NewPix, this will pass 5000, at least.
My Signature is.... Wait for it...
