Nah, that was a ways in. The first image would have been up for midnightish to 12:30am, US EDT.

I think this was the first image.
I had downloaded most of the images, this is the copy on my dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/s/hi78e20932arkl9/time.png

By the way, I think the sea level rose about 2px since the 1st (or 2nd) image.

Edit: Hmm, probably just my imagination.

Yeah, a few people managed to save the first image... afaik no-one has (as yet) come up who saved the URL for it, with the magic hash, so we can't link to it on the XKCD site, have to resort to linking to offsite copies.

Well, I don't know about overall, but as far as the mind-bendingly huge ones go, yes. "Umwelt" only got to page 7 on the first day, and even "Click-and-Drag" only got to page 10. We're already on page 11.

The comic is actually only the 18th most viewed explanation page on the explainxkcd wiki at the time of this writing, although that metric compares the all-time page hit scores of other comics to "Time"'s score from only 20 hours.

Here is the original link. I just now managed to pull it off m.xkcd.com before the page refreshed to the current image.

That's the second image. The first image is very similar though.

EDIT: I give up on trying to figure out the original image. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy this slow progression.

I count a 2 pixel rise too, but it could just be the entire image shifting, not tides.

I think they only count views when the server is actually able to serve pages. It has big problems trying to do that now.

I hope you are generally correct, except that if you leave it open for a month there's a bonus frame where Godzilla steps on them.

Has anyone else noticed that these two pages return different ID's, but the same image hash:

I'm betting that

through

do too.

Wouldn't it suck if that's what all this was about?

I think it will end up as touching too, but if I could pick a comedy ending, it would be a flying shark attack. I've always thought the flying shark attack was one of the funniest images in xkcd.

Actually, it'd be awesome. Even if the last frame has that very same joke written on it, it'll be around 10+ more pages of discussion about "what it actually meant". :)

If I watch Primis's gif, I see the water ripple in the first few frames, and then it seems like Randall just got tired of rippling the water. The only other water movement is when the bald/short-haired person sticks their foot in. I don't think it intentionally rose. It just moved a bit.

mpete wrote:are they doing that thing where you bury someone in sand?

I thought that, too. Either that, or they're building a castle that they can live inside, and the castley bit we've seen so far is just one corner turret.

At first I was thinking of the tide washing the castle away, but since there has been no tidal movement I think it's more like a lake. The sand castle is more like the ball pit back in the day, mixing romance with the playful young aspect.

Quoting again because some people are talking about the importance of vigilantly saving each frame as it occurs. Don't worry, guys and gals, it's under control.

I am certainly having fun following this and decided to register. I only checked xkcd a few hours ago and left not fully understanding the comic. Then I noticed my history panel showed a different picture in the preview and came back to the comic. Then I knew something was up, which is why I ended up here. I was interested to see the progression of pictures that I missed. Thanks for making the gif!

Nothing more fun than a curious mystery to be solved.

A frame or two after she sat back down after admiring the sandcastle I thought it looked like she was maybe beginning to bury herself, and he sat down to join in, but now it seems like they are extending the castle, making a wall, as the pile they made seems too long just for covering her legs. A bigger, more amazing sandcastle may still be in the works :) Also, the sudden jumps from sitting, to standing facing backwards carrying sand, and sitting back down makes me think he got up to get sand closer to the water, which would be more wet for building with...

My prediction... I have a feeling that this won't be some thing that just ends by next week. I get the feeling that this will end up being some massive story of sorts that lasts for a full year, with several updates a day.

Count me as one more in the legions who have joined today because of this comic. My theory- based on the latest update- is that they're building the palace from Civilization 1. One chunk at a time, just like in the game.

I'm really excited for tomorrows What-if page, it would be great to get an explanation for all of this, but I also think it would be really cool if the question reffered to time or waiting in some way...I guess only time will tell!

The same thing happened to me, I just refreshed the page and it went to the latest image, but if I keep refreshing it starts back at 1 and then back again, odd.
