Though the celestial pole/equator also migrates due to precession, I don't know if the calculation took account of that.

Ah, here are the last two firstposts:

This is starting to seem like the OTT is driving the OTC.

Welcome. And yes, the astronomers have determined that it takes place about 11,000 years in the future, at a latitude of about 40°N.

Welcome. Given what they've told Rosetta/Hairdo since your posts, probably not.

The calculation doesn't need to take account of that, it'll work for any spinning object in any field of stars, you can find your latitude relative to the axis of rotation. Of course, the Earth's axis of rotation also moves around slowly, but probably not more than a few hundred miles over 10k+ years.

Exactly. The circular arcs let you find the point the star field appears to be rotating about, whether the North Star, another star, or no star is there. Whatever the point is, whether it's moved due to precession or not, the angle it is above the horizon is your latitude.

ETA: Alternatively, you can use the method that was actually used, and find the angle that star tracks make when they intersect the (presumed to be horizontal) horizon, and this is easiest for stars farthest from the celestial pole, near the celestial equator, since their star tracks are close to straight lines, and it is easiest to calculate the angle with the horizon.

Prediction: In the next few newpix, Cuegan will decide to go back down to warn their people/tribe/family, The Forty, that they need to pack up and move to higher ground.

<edit to add> They seem to be at least semi-nomadic and live in tents, so this shouldn't be as traumatic as it might otherwise be...

Ha! I have a totally backwards moment there.

I'm usually I'm like:

"Holy molpy! Nice Manip there but Randall would have never came with something like that (I wish he would, though)"

This time I was like:

"Meh. Cueball speaks Beanish, maybe he'll translate for us. Or he's repeating like a parrot what Darryl said."

I never imagined it was a manip, so I guess that's the most believable one so far (after the incoming tide of before the fade, which I also fell in for.)
