⁷, four ONGs (and counting)?

Anyway, molpy's gone. Image

This is a comparison with two frames ago. So, the bush is in exactly the same state as it was then.

Four ONGs within a sixty-second period ─ has that ever happened before? [ETA: Even on that comment I'm ninja'd about four times.] Ironic that such careful attention is being paid now.

(Looks like the molpy left again.)

Yappo, the first two are hilarious. I can't wait for my wife to hear "Every Newframe's Awefulsome." But from some of the comments I've already seen I don't dare listen to "Megan and Cue" yet; I have to appear reasonably normal in public this evening.

Okay, so I came back to notice that there were 15 newpages added since i left 6 hours ago. I went to check the OTC to see why and the alt-text now says the end. Is this actually the end? Could someone please catch me up? Has anyone noticed that xkcd links to geekwagon? I've been freaking out while writing this and I can barely type.

hey. we have now four panels after the one that said "THE END" and it's still moving.
In panel 3100 (according to aubronwood) we had some movement on the very right side. In panel 3101 this movement gone... Just sayin'.
Well. Here in Germany its 2:10 in the Morning. I'm gonna go comatose for a few hours, hallucinate vividly, and then maybe suffer amnesia about the whole experience (http://xkcd.com/203/) and then I'll look if Time has really ended.
See you then. Good Night.

asmodai wrote:And, you know... the biggest question of all, at least for me:

Why was it called "Time"?
Was that a simple way of making sure people cottoned on to the fact that the frame would change?

I expected something different. Metaphor, theme, allusion... just.. not nothing.

I mean, it was a great ride. It really was. But I can't not pick this nit.

I can't disagree more.

I've read a lot of SF stories about the distant future of humanity, on the scale of millennia or more. It's actually not one of the most popular SF motifs, at least when not wrapped up in space opera ("... a legendary forgotten planet known as earth..."), but it's been done.

Sometimes it's a hero arising out of that future time who goes exploring in some forbidden zone, sometimes it's a lost time traveler, but it's almost always about discovering the future's past. Whether it's our great age of technological marvels now poignantly gone (John Cambell's classic [and vampire-free] Twilight), or how we screwed up so badly that some other species had to take over (Planet of the Apes, or just about anything by Sherri Tepper), or how the current events of the decade of the story's writing continue to be the primary force shaping the distant future (The Time Machine), or just how silly and warlike we were before the aliens found us (the back-story in lots of space opera), the important thing is... it's all about us! The year might be 227,652 AD "in the old human reckoning," but we still get to be the heroes, or at least the villains.

Well, here's the thing. Randall Munroe's Time doesn't fit that mold. It's not about us. It's about people in their own time.

We thought and sometimes wished it might be otherwise. For instance, many followers including me thought it would be cool if Megan and Cueball found the Clock of the Long Now. Because hey look, that's a thing happening in our own time. If the story became about how they found it and what effects finding it had on them, then it would be all about us after all.

Many others wanted to know (and perhaps still want to know) whether the inundation is "our" fault, a result of extrapolating present day problems (global warming) and technological hubris into our own near future, thus inadvertently damning (and damming) theirs. Because if it was, then it would be all about us after all.

Maybe some of the Beanies' knowledge or technology came from our time. Maybe not. Megan and Cueball and the Almost Forty don't know and, within the scope of this story, don't care. Maybe their folklore about castles is partly about our huge present-day cities, the two things getting conflated in the future kind of like the way we often jumble together different "ancient" architectures even though they're from millennia apart. Even if that's true, that's not what the story's about.

Why, then, put deep time (on the human scale anyhow) in the back-story? Because it's a story about time, and what time does is move on. For good or ill, we don't loom over the distant future the way we like to think we do. The continents grind together or spin apart, seas rise and fall, the earth wobbles on its axis, the stars drift out of their constellations and eventually die. And after all that, it's still now. There's a boy and girl on a beach and the time is now, the time is right now and only now, to build a castle.

That, I believe, is why it's called "Time."

OK, it's prediction .. errr... time:

GLR will post up a newpix once per Outside year on the anniversary of the very first Time frame.

All of us loyalists will manage to come up with something to say about each frame, filling perhaps 2500 NewPages per year. GLR shakes his head in disbelief.

In other words, there's plenty to do!

Time enough at last... (Just make sure you stop the clip when you hear that line  )

Before I coma'd I thought I was going to wake up to the end.

I like this end. Sometimes you just have to let the characters start their post-adventure lives off screen in your imagination.

I like the link to geekwagon, finally proving once and for all the GLR's awareness of the community following.

...

I just don't know if this really, really, really IS the end. If it's the end, why not finish on "The End"? While it still moves, I shall still wait for it with you, my fellow waiters.

...

...

It's going to be chirping weird not having the OTT to ketchup on.

I left for 3 chirping hours and this is what I come back to. Oh well, guess I will keep waiting for it. This crazy thread is a great distraction from crazy work. (Seriously guys, I don't even...)

Even after other comics pass their threads keep going. There will always be more comments in the OTT.

Welp. Wow. :D

I hope we get a post-credits scene type thing, at least.

And I was there at the time too, just not logged in :( the forum times me out constantly...

Well everyone, I have to go do outside stuff (I hate summer classes) but I will be back soon to wait on.

I had a feeling in the back of my mind that the OTC would end midnight yesterday or today. I had hoped to be wrong. When I looked last night at 1:00 AM you wouldn't believe how happy I was. I guess GLR knew that would happen and ended it when I didn't expect it (although I still have hope). I would use an incredible amount of profanity right now to express my mood but I not sure if that's allowed here. If there's one thing that none of us can do, it's leave. Please stay

As far as the hats go, I think it's safe to say that I'm pretty well set. Unless my hat, pre-dating Time itself, needs a hat of its own??

So, since it's looking like it might be over, I've been trying to upload the GIF to ExplainXKCD http://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.p ... imated.gif. (It took something like 15 minutes to optimize that beast!) For some reason, I'm not able to get it to upload. It's a 12.1 MB GIF, but the submission form specifically says the limit is 40 MB. Does anyone have any idea why this might be a problem? I'm using Firefox 22.0 on Linux (Fedora 18), FWIW. And I am logged in there, if that makes any difference. Yes, a logical next step would be to try uploading more modest files, and see if that works; I'll be doing that soon.

Please CC (as nearly you can) me in PM, since I'm still nowhere near blitzed up.
P.S. I am Randall, but not that Randall.
We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We can make it better than it was. Better … stronger … well, maybe not faster.
Well, BlitzGirl is experiencing a bit of a title wave.

Don't worry, blitzGirl has the doors covered and we have about 100 people tied up in the basement.

It's ok, most of us don't seem to want to go anywhere ;) (And if they tried, BlitzGirl would have 'em in the basement before you can say molpy!)

And it's ok, profanity is fine here, as long as it's not heretical outside profanity! CHIRP! MUSTARD! MOLPYCHIRPIN' MUSTARD!
