Grepus wrote:Something I've not read about... but you can no longer get the hashed URL from xkcd.com/1190/ - it now points to imgs.xkcd.com/comics/time.png - how do we link to the latest frame without it updating the next newpic?

If you go to GET time.png directly, you get a couple of HTTP redirects (first a 301, which gets you to a 302) which end up GETting the image with the 64 character filename. If it's in a browser window that's been open past a newpix, then JavaScript gets the information off of other servers, and goes straight for the big name after that.

Added: Here's a sample; this is the intermediate step, which should always get you the newest hash. http://c.xkcd.com/redirect/comic/time Notice how after you click it, the URL changes to one on imgs.xkcd.com, and then (I hadn't noticed this when I wrote the above) to one on https://sslimgs.xkcd.com.
Further added: Ah, I think that last HTTPS redirect is probably done by a browser extension I use, HTTPS Everywhere. So, you probably won't see that yourself, if you do that.

I wonder if he is crouched down, peering over the wall, or laying back against the wall and staring at the sky. Maybe even taking a bit of a nap while Megan continues to build off to the left.

Well, I'm gonna hang around until the next newpix, and then I'm peacing out for the night, since at that point it will be 3:30 AM here and I need to be up in about 9 newpix to get even more work done.

Been fun tonight though.

Oh, the perils of having an approximately rotationally symmetric head.

I reckon he's having a cheeky leak behind the castle. He's been going for 4 days and after all a mans gotta go when a mans gotta go.

I still contend that he's bending down to pick the flags back up. But I guess I won't know for 9 or so more newpix, for I am off to bed. Good night, everyone!

Don't die.

Be good.

And if you can't be good, have fun.

EDIT: Wow. Making it auto-substitute the word tin for C-A-N is really weird, albeit a delightful pun.

I think he's digging behind the castle to get some sand/whateveritis, he has to get it from somewhere.

While you people have been wasting your time here, I have been reading The Other Comics, and have made a startling discovery: the woman in this comic is NOT named Megan! Her name is MEEEEEE.

Please get it right going forward.

Actually MEEEEEE is her stage name as a singer, her real name is clearly "I hacked the audio fingerprint database".

I was really wondering about that, when I saw someone else's "tin" above. I assumed it was just a rather unusual typo. Do you mean the BB here does the subbing? Let's see: can it change this one? Yes it can, even in preview!

Maybe that's how the sand gets its unusual structural properties?

No, without spaces, like so: ОМG. Now I'll let y'all try to puzzle that out.

Added: Ah, I see you had a similar idea to mine, which resulted in wider letters. No space characters in between, after all. My bad.

Oh, oh, I just thought about a new end of comic (well, not really) theory.
Just before the FDP of 2013-04-1 we will see a frame maximizing the suspense, then, as midnight comes, we will see Error 500 when we will try to look at this comic. For increased psychological pain, we will be able to see a frame every now and then showing that something fabulous is happening in the frames we cannot see.

So, um, in the hours it took me to be forced to the hospital by George The Malevolent Gallstone, get diagnosed, medicated, come home and sleep off the meds, etc., we've gained 40 pages. If anyone would be so kind as to PM me with a quick summary of what's happened? I'd be MOST appreciative, because there is just no way I'm gonna make it through those 40 pages in my current Vicodin haze.
