I call Blitzus Annoyus on the oldpixpope, because only about 3 UNGs out of the next 20 or so are particularly interesting (the ones with dialogue).

Oh ch*rp, I've been ninja'd. Does Blitzus Annoyus still work?

Given that Neil simply bowed without saying anything, I think Blitzus Annoyus is still applicable.

Molpy down.

Postby BlitzGirl » Wed May 07, 2014 7:26 am UTC

Whew. :) I suppose the oldpix could still be made interesting with "OTTification or colorization" if OTTers have the Time for them. When it comes to the raw frames though, given that the OTT rate has settled to an average of less than 3 posts per hour, it's probably better not to UNG every UNG this newpage.

I, FOR ONE, WELCOME OUR NEW UNG OVERLORDS

Postby mrob27 » Wed May 07, 2014 9:47 am UTC

There has been a bug for a while today, a JavaScript error that would have prevented Q04B from loading, but I believe it is now fixed. Apologies if you were annoyed that it wouldn't load . . . but if you're glad it wouldn't load  then maybe I'll add an option that causes random intermittent JavaScript errors. :P

azule wrote: Neat. One qualm: Is it really safe NP1+? What about no molpies? np 2003 is on the line, as it could be construed as speculation or a spoiler that it goes for at least that long.

Right you are, @azule! Thank you. The "molpy" is a real spoiler problem, and "basementee" is far worse. So yes it should be NP1263. As for the newpix 2003, I kinda  don't care, but of course NP1263 is well after that. Anyway, edited and fixed.

Thanks. I don't recall this "finitist"...is that because you haven't shared it with us before? I'm looking forward to it. :)

Oh... uhhh, here it is:
Image
Stump the Finitst

But I don't make it clear enough what a "finitist" is, so the comic doesn't work. This, plus the rather poor quality of the scan, and realizing that actually it almost certainly was not in any xkcd, are the reasons why I want to re-do it.

I really do wonder if there ever was a hash for it. Did the first frame redirect? Maybe, like the religion you mention, it was always meant to be officially lost (only to be saved by the fans).

Oh, what a simple and obvious answer! Yes, that's not half bad :D

SBN wrote: I apparently can't order my new organized sand online, because, "Our website works best with Internet Explorer" ...

Weird. I haven't run into a site like that in a while, except for tax related ones (which I get working just fine once I spoof IE for them.) I agree with your analogy.

Perhaps you will also see this on hospital patient-information sites. The institutions that have "one-browser-only" websites are usually so paranoid about security that they hire somebody to stay on top of all security issues that might come up. Since they're being paid by the hour, there is pressure to reduce the sources of problems as much as possible.
Browser vulnerabilities are one of the types of issues that these paid people have to spend valuable time trying to fix, and one easy way to save money is to make sure they only have one browser to worry about. They may already have a one-browser-only rule within the institution, so imposing that on the customer doesn't seem as much of a big deal.

I think what you're indicating is to keep people from being addicted by giving them better tools to handle what they're viewing.

Based on the articles I have read, the only significant addictive element in "2048", and thus in Q04B, is the Partial Reinforcement Effect (PRE). The game does not have either of the other big addictive elements, which are social involvement (and obligation and guilt, as in Farmville) and escapism (like the immersive 3-D experience of World of Warcraft)
Furthermore, the PRE in video games like World of Warcraft are a problem mainly because of the unpredictability of the rewards. Just DuckDuckGoogleBing "partial reinforcement gambling addiction" or "partial reinforcement reward schedule", or "video game addiction" if you want to be less specific.
Ironically, in "2048" and Q04B, the rewards are in fact very predictable. I believe that it is just in a lack of obviousness, that in Q04B they seem unpredictable: In "2048" it's easy to see that you have a 512 and a 256 and a 128 and a 64 and you're about to get another 64 triggering a cascade. In Q04B the problem was that the tiles are graphical and it was hard to see the sequence.
Early in the discussion of this game, I said that not knowing the order of the tiles was "meant to be part of the fun of playing.". Here we see that I was wrong :( because not knowing the order of the tiles also contributes to this undesirable PRE effect.
A while after I began to worry that everyone was literally hating me because of the game, I was also considering a request to provide a list of the tiles you've found so far (to preserve the mystery of any yet to be found, but still help in actually playing the game) and I devised a solution.
Now there is the row of "badges" across the bottom, and those consecutive tiles (the 64, 128, 256, and 512) will all be lit up in a row making it easy to see you have a cascade coming.

Oh, I dunno. On the OTT, it certainly has the social aspect.

I find Q04b to be much more interesting than the number-based version (which bores me) because of the graphic tiles. They "mean something", and are easier to register, probably for the same reason mixed case is easier to read.

Or a ch*rp! I find things go well so long as rows and columns are not complete (thus locked up), but once a few rows are locked, it's harder and harder to move. It's a long term project. I should have a couple weeks where C is higher than average, so maybe I can get a good start on it. The rolling raft-castle issue might turn out to be an easy fix though, so that's one good thing. Well, This video used 515 as a sequel. I think you could use any of the BHG comics that have a female companion, assuming they're all the same woman, which would include 440, 481 and 506. There are also prequels like 325.

Thanks @ucim for the perspective on Q04B... I guess there is some social involvement, as we all endeavor to appreciate the contributions of each other here. But social addictiveness and social devotion have to be somewhat distinct, no?

ucim wrote: ... I am surprised that it doesn't ch*rp as fast as I expect; there always seems to be something you can collapse, until there isn't.

After @Eternal Density's links on NP1817 to the various 2048 variants, I played a 2048 on a 6×6 grid for a few weeks, and got to about 650,000 points. I kept thinking it was over, but then I was able to get out of a jam and keep going, until the ch*rped grid was a distant memory. I really like the idea that it goes on and on... large grids are going to be like that (see my post at OTT:1819:26). It was then just a matter of choosing a goal that would be a little bit beyond the average player's ability, and other design ideas like the images and 5×7 layout which I described at OTT:1822:20. Somewhere between then and NP 1900 I forgot the bit where I said, maybe the game should make you Wait a bit to encourage learning the patterns and strategy, and discourage addictiveness  Blame it on the Sadness, I guess. :(

I am in the midst of the slowest ketchup. Some of you may remember those Heinz ketchup commercials with the slogan "It's Slow Good," with Carly Simon in the background singing, "Anticipay-ay-tion." It's kinda like that.

So, this is ketchup through NP1931. Sorry for blindposting.

I always loved Shel Silverstein, but I have to say that I can't read The Giving Tree anymore. Yes! Let's teach females that they should sit around while a guy keeps coming back and taking more and more from you, and then goes away and leaves you! Grrr.

Julie Andrews was in the original Broadway cast of Camelot. By the time the movie was made, she was too big of a movie start to accept the role, plus it was probably a bit of a "Ch*rp you!" to the director. He was also the guy that didn't cast her in the movie of My Fair Lady a few years earlier, even though she played the role on Broadway, because he thought she wouldn't bring people to the theater. Guess he feels stupid now. Actually, he's probably dead now, so he probably doesn't feel anything. /random musical trivia

Just up against the sidewalk were a couple of the geese and several goslings, about 4 inches tall, which were poking around on the sidewalk. As the car went by the goslings startled and scrambled for the grass, and as always I was struck by how very dinosaurian they still are - they looked a lot like that picture of a raptor with night-vision goggles and a blaster. (Can't find the image )
Have you ever seen a bunch of chicks in the nest, all fluttering and climbing on each other and cheeping their tiny brains out? It doesn't sound like cheeping to me, it sounds like ‘pew, pew, pew, pew-pew,’ as if they're shooting tiny lasers everywhere.
And I started to wonder: if modern birds, or at least the chicks, have lasers, is that a holdover from dinosaurs? If dinosaurs had lasers, how come they aren't still around as a dominant species? If they didn't have lasers but are developing them now, are we in trouble?
Anyway, welcome to the inside of my head. What isn't puns, is stuff like this.

Thanks for the insight into your brain. :) The dinosaurs did have lasers. Unfortunately, there were no instruction manuals, and with their tiny brains they couldn't figure the lasers out, so nomolpy knew how to use them. More often or not, they ended up shooting themselves, or another dinosaur. Thus ended the dinosaurs. (Oh, the K-T event may have had something to do with it, but they mostly did it to themselves. )

Off-leash legality varies a lot. Where I live it is legal during the day, but not inside parks. The next county over, it isn't at all. What is probably not legal at all is bothering the gooseraptors. Legal or not though, there's no excuse for it. Bad for the gooseraptors, bad for that wolpy, and bad for all the other wolpies and their owners.

:D If you come up with names, let me know, so I know what to call all that the next time it happens to me.

The mysterious unexplained letters in @SBN's posts are the names of these types of Time:

  • A : The amount of time one spends frustrated before giving in and asking for help.
  • B : The amount of time before guests arrive (so the amount available to clean/get ready)
  • C : The date on which one must go into panic mode, due to the imminent arrival of said guests, and the condition of one's house. Or the reciprocal, the amount of time one spends procrastinating.

Thus, when @SBN writes:

SBN wrote: I still have a large A, and a couple weeks with a larger than usual C. (Unfortunately, in my world, C often goes negative.)

She means roughly:

Without mysterious letters, SBN wrote:I still have a large amount of time to spend being frustrated before I'll give in and ask for help, and a couple weeks with a larger than usual panic, due to the imminent arrival of guests, and the condition of my house. (Unfortunately, in my world, the panic often goes negative, causing the reciprocal, i.e. procrastination.)

See, it all makes sense now!
