https://youtu.be/ik9uc4oC3UU - 15 minutes of bftfdrawing.
Also, lmwg.zip.

So, there are multiple otters making their computers sing "Still alive". There are more otters making there own markup languages (not me), more otters figuring out game file formats, etc. Interesting.

Redundant:
lmwg.zip
.xcf is not allowed as attachment, so I zipd it.

Edit: I accidentally pasted the whole OTT into the Xcode search bar. I'm just going to get some food while Xcode recovers.

Yeah, we missed her second Blitziversery. :(

She posted something a while back about going to a wedding, I think. Must have been a very long wedding. We need a BlitzGirl Summonus. Who has the "I Can't Believe It's Not Goat's Blood"?

I think the main benefit of being Goat was that you didn't have to think up a decree. :D

Well, I am reasonably sure it didn't turn out to be a red wedding. Didn't see her on any of the mailed lists of recently deceased. I haven't got any "I Can't Believe It's Not Goat's Blood" left but I could dilute some tomato ketchup and add some beetroot juice. It should suffice.

Had to look up red wedding. Must watch Game of Thrones some day. Or read it.

Oh sure, I understand. I wouldn't be trying it on anything big, anyway. I do all my serious work in Terminal. But it would have been fun to read your blog and actually try out what you're writing about. And yes, I see you really want to go wild on the icon, so perhaps it's beyond all of our skills. (Apple expects you to make it look photo-realistic but without using photos? )

Outside users will probably only search haiku in small2 things like novels or bibles, anyway, so it'll still be pretty quick.

What are we up to now? Hmmm, let's see… (checking)
2310 pages of the OTT = 10,187,737 words
= 53× Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    = 50× Dune (Frank Herbert)
    = 38× Ulysses (James Joyce)
= 32× The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand)
    = 12× KJV Bible

Perhaps @BlitzGirl has Blitzed into the future… from our point of view she's in the future, but from her point of view we're in her Aforewhen. So we just need to glide inexorably forward through a certain dimension… or in other words, ⏳ Wait for It.

Thanks for the enhancing, mrob! Does 27 mean something?

Maybe, I'm not sure. It's a number I notice a lot. I'm not alone, and there are other numbers similar to 27 (like 17 and 37) that people notice a lot for no particular reason; 27 just happens to be mine. See my 27 article for more, and also 17 which describes the "psychologically random numbers" phenomenon.

Well, good news! I changed the deployment target to 10.6 and had no complaints from the compiler, so I assume I changed it to 10.7 unintentionally rather than as a result of a need for new features. I haven't actually tested it on 10.6 though.
mrob27 wrote:And yes, I see you really want to go wild on the icon, so perhaps it's beyond all of our skills. (Apple expects you to make it look photo-realistic but without using photos? )
Yes, the constraints are rather difficult for a one-coder team to fulfil. There are companies that charge thousands of dollars for icons now. But I can still distribute it for free or sell it with Kagi (it's probably about time I sold something through them again; I've been using their email forwarder for decades) with a less-good icon. Actually, I don't know how strict the app store is about icon quality. Maybe I could just do a not-so-great one.

No, I just came back because I happened to have some Time to fix some problems in Haiku Detector, so I came here to announce them. And then I nerdsniped myself with other improvements, and I'm still playing with it now. It's good to be coding again. :)

mrob27 wrote:
Angelastic wrote:There are not many / Haiku with the word 'any' / Spoiler: show Panther Salve.

Yeah, it was a bug. A very silly bug. I had sets of one- and two-syllable words from the top ten hundred words, as a bit of an optimisation (I didn't want to cache syllable counts of all the words I looked up until I did more profiling) but I'd put 'any' into the wrong list. This had the effect of filtering out almost all the 'any' haiku (one survived, somehow.) There were no false positives, since it checks the syllable count of each line as a whole due to punctuation possibly causing pronunciation differences. Anyway, now I have a unit test checking that the lists are accurate. I also added a progress bar rather than an indeterminate progress indicator, and I'm running the OTT through Haiku Detector again, but somewhere along the line I have acquired a new hanging bug, so I haven't got it to finish yet.

Edit: It now finds 16776 haiku instead of 16667. Here are the new ones:

Postby balthasar_s » Sat May 16, 2015 4:11 am UTC

the mrONGbdex story continues.

Code: Select all

masterworks from each run, curating a large body of literature with which to educate the OTTificial intelligence that would become the Bard itself.
Mrorl spent the better part of two wips building the great brain, combining the more passionate (but less destructive) aspects of each of his earlier Machines and Bots, with more emotive elements and semantic circuits in the spots that seemed best. He was about to invite Balthacarius to attend a trial run, then thought better of it and switched on the machine for some private tests. It immediately began to deliver a dissertaion on The Origin and Perpetuation of Neo-Sociological Distributed Collaborative Creative Consortia^{3}. Mrorl bypassed some of the logical circuits, and turned up the gain on the emotive whim-generators; the machine sulked and repeated a short epigram on e****ishness in a steadily falling monotone until Mrorl sympathetically switched it off. Mrorl augmented its semantic modules and re-installed a major confidence unit (that he had for a while blamed for Cueball's cliff-diving tendencies); the Botcastle then informed him that he -- *Mrorl* -- had been created to fulfill *its* every wish, and that Mrorl was hereby ordered to begin adding another twenty floors to the Botcastle's existing seven, so it could better formulate the meaning of Existence, Spaaace and Time, and enjoy a better view across the valley. Mrorl installed philosophical rate-limiters instead, and the Botcastle basemented. Only after a dip of pleading, PMing and public posts was he able to get it to recite something: <*:"I saw a little ribbit.":> That appeared to exhaust its repertoire.
Mrorl adjusted, recalibrated, cross-connected, pivoted, inverted, transposed, renormalised, did everything he could think of -- and the machine presented him with a "poem" that made him thank the GLR that Balthacarius was not there to laugh -- imagine simulating an entire epic journey, many Times over, in exquisite detail, not to mention an entire OTTiverse for each, containing OTTers to observe the Frames and comment thereon, only to end up with such a dreadful mess, almost more palatable when rot13'd. Mrorl attached seven entropy filters, but they melted; he refabricated them out of pure corundum. This seemed to work; he turned the semanticity up to eleven, appended an alternating-rhyme generator -- which ruined everything, as the machine resolved to start a band and tour the third galactic arm playing acid-metal nursery rhymes to any planet still lacking an organised Kindergarten system. But at the very last minip, just as he was nearly about to give up and take a pry-bar to the whole thing, Mrorl had a sudden inspiration; tossing out all remaining logic units, he replaced them with self-centred (but also self-regulating) solipsistic semantic synchronisers. The machine wimpered a bit, then simpered, looked out across the valley, winked and blinked, then laughed and remarked at how OTTish everything had been seeming lately, then politely but firmly asked for pen and paper. Relieved, Mrorl sighed, hurriedly tucked the pry-bar away in a tools-cabinet, switched the machine off and

It's interesting that you should say that, because I'm pretty sure I've heard people (people such as Richard Stallman) vehemently insisting (he loves vehemently insisting things!) that Open Source and Free are not the same thing and one should not get them confused (although Open Source Software is a superset of Free Software.) Which is why I made a distinction in my post. You don't want to mess with a guy who has a katana.

I have no issues with the other just-in-case, though.

I make most of things I write available. Even If I know that the code does not look as well as I would like and am afraid of what people may think of me when they see what I have written. Because maybe It can be useful for someone.
The mirror, for example. I started writing it without really knowing how to do all the things I needed for this. I learned everything while writing and that's visible in the code. Especially bot2.awk could be written much better.
However I DID make some changes before releasing it. It had to be done otherwise it would only work on my server and nowhere else.

The singing Amiga 500 I made available without changing anything. It was supposed to work once and it did. I will probobly never go back to it. And that's what the code looked like: portal.c (Amiga), portal.cpp (PC).

I WAITED HALF A MIP FOR ONE DARKENING PIXEL

Postby mrob27 » Sat May 16, 2015 2:58 pm UTC

Back on 1990 Aug 1st, Richard Stallman led a LPF (League for Programming Freedom) protest in front of the Lotus building in Cambridge (Massachusetts), USA[cn] over their role in instigating "look and feel copyright" lawsuits. It's the only time I got a chance to speak with him one-to-one. I wanted his opinion on the general issue of writing free (or "open-source", but that term wasn't too popular yet) software for commercial platforms like Mac or DOS/Windows. I told RMS that I write free software for the Apple "Mac" platform. He did, indeed, vehemently insist that was a bad idea.
25 years ago, I wrote:The League means a lot to me, even though I haven't been involved directly until today. I ask Richard Stallman (calling him "Mr. Stallman") the question - "I fell in love with the Macintosh back before Apple was such a bunch of jerks. What should I do?" He smiles and says he knows it's difficult when you 'fall in love' with something. I should not buy any more Macintoshes, and should tell others not to buy them either. Then I tell him that I write free software for the Mac — probably a big mistake. He goes into a rather long description of the reasons behind not writing software for Apple machines. This makes me feel bad, as I am making him repeat himself (and thus waste his time) and am also insulting the League (by supporting them while at the same time being a Macintosh developer). But he also gives me a bit of advice which I appreciate: I should port my software to other machines. This, at least, is something which I can do to "save my face".

Stallman's reasons were similar to some of those @Sustainibilizer expounded in his talk at the beginning of the Bochum conference. I now write my free (libre) software mainly for the UNIX/POSIX environment and it just happens to run on Apple systems because subsequent to 1990, Apple adopted UNIX.

Also, I agree with @balthasar_s on the general idea that m*stardy code is better than no code at all, so I just go ahead and share stuff. The main reason I don't publish more is that most of my code is Perl scripts that use a single huge require file of subroutines, and those include personal information that I would need to separate out. Mainly stuff like depending on my username (mostly fixed) and directory names that won't exist in someone else's account, or might exist already for a different purpose.

Yes, that is what I meant:

A bell means ONG. ⏰ It is a good sign.

I was saying, approximately:
  "bell"
→ ONG and t1i (the closest we have to a "Time 2")
→ SilentTimer Image (note ong in final frame of avatar's animation, also "bell" in upper-left of full-size avatar)
  → alarm clock ⏰
→ The original hourly ONG which is a web-based countdown timer alarm
  → bell
  → etc…

 — mrob27 Image

[cn]Huh. I see that Wikipedia needs a citation for the existence of those LPF protests. I guess I'll try to write something about this and put it on a web page so they can cite me.

(Edit to quote myself and clarify the SilentTimer connection)

Okay, when I say “are the same software” I'm referring to this:
Richard Stallman wrote:The official definition of “open source software” (which is published by the Open Source Initiative and is too long to include here) was derived indirectly from our criteria for free software. It is not the same; it is a little looser in some respects. Nonetheless, their definition agrees with our definition in most cases.

I would like to thank the OTT for providing such a comprehensive set of test data. Every time I think I'll just test it one more time, release it and go coma, I notice a possible bug or a possible feature and keep going. I just fixed a bug involving something clever about the pronunciation of initialisms and the way that interacts (badly) with the separation into words, which I would not have noticed if it weren't for the fact that one good haiku disappeared after I fixed the 'any' bug.

Up here we're learning lots.

Postby mrob27 » Sat May 16, 2015 9:00 pm UTC

Sorry @Angelastic, I see that my "m*stardy code is better than no code at all" coments were across purposes to your objective of doing things that would help on a résumé. I was jumping on a bandwagon there. I blame it on broken botcastle angst.

Angelastic wrote:Well, good news! I changed the deployment target to 10.6 and had no complaints from the compiler, so I assume I changed it to 10.7 unintentionally rather than as a result of a need for new features. I haven't actually tested it on 10.6 though.

I'll test for you. I'm sure it'll work fine, based on your descriptions so far and the overall statistics of 10.6 apps that run with no modification in 10.7, I don't think they changed anything that would affect this app.

Actually, I don't know how strict the app store is about icon quality. Maybe I could just do a not-so-great one.

The only icon I've had any part in is Ready.
Image

(Look familiar?) But that icon violates the "don't make it look like an iOS app" rule. It's not on the App Store and I don't know if there are plans to make it an app for any store, but I doubt Apple could object to this icon if the shape were changed to a circle.
The related program Golly is on both Google Play and iTunes App Stores. (I have made only minor contributions to both programs, mainly because it's a pain to have to keep upgrading the libraries it depends on and avoid disrupting all the rest of my workflow. So I just use an old version that does everything I'd ever want anyway).

My main botcastle has failed yet again, and this portable I'm using now is probably going to stop working soon. The bOTTeriada ONGs suffered a bit, but I've tried to manually ONG a few lines of text to catch up to where we would have been (I think). When this happens again, it will again take a day or two for me to waste time trying to get the broken machine to work, and then re-synchronise my bots or transfer them to another machine.
A lot of the things I do can be readily switched over to Linux, so my long-term plan is to replace one or the other Mac system with a Linux system.

Sustainibilizer wrote:My impression is that for RMS communication via email is more natural than in person. (Maybe he's secretly an OTTer?)

Hah! Yes I suppose that's probably true. Reading what I wrote 25 years ago, I think it's true for me too. But I am one of those who believe that Richard Stallman is secretly Rosetta.

Whoa! Did you know that Mac speech synthesis pronounces a single letter repeating with whitespace between the individual letters, e.g.

F F F F F F F

as only three of that letter, no matter how many there actually are? So if I double-check each full line after reading individual words to see where the breaks are, it thinks that this masterpiece:

F F F F F
F F F F F F F
F F F F FTHUNK!!!

(which, incidentally, I change to lowercase so that the last word is not spelt out, which is why OTT is one syllable, but I think this is an okay compromise) might not be a haiku after all.

The OTT is truly a wealth of test data. GlaDOS would love it here. Especially with all the cakes.

That sounds a bit double entendreish.

balthasar_s wrote:Caprice, I like the songs. The first one I like the most. If I understand correctly It's done in a voice-generation software that was designed for the Japanese language. But you make it sing English. I like it.

I once made the Amiga 500 sing "still alive" by using the narrator.device which was designed for English but not for singing. So I understand that this is not as easy as it looks like.

All the voices I've used so far were made for English, actually (except for MAIKA, which is meant for Spanish, but also has extra sounds for English).

Can it be kxa's wheelstick with a 3d camera attachted to it, looking to the ground?

In the background we see an antenna¹ and a crane, so we are most probably in the Moonbase.
(Is that a molpy floating above the 3d camera?)

Right ONG, Sustainibilizer!
