ZoomanSP wrote:Hey, we have a goat decree! :D

That's a pretty molpish idea. I decree that Goats may decree if they wish, and {Mome/Pope}s may also, but if the Goat decreed something the Mome may feel free to not decree. Does that make sense?
What I mean is that for any given page, either the top post or the last post of the previous page is eligible for decreeing. This might be just the thing for those who sometime would rather not post if they're going to be Mome, or (for different reasons perhaps) would rather not post if they're going to be Goat. It also means we can end up with two suggested decrees at any given Time, which might be good for the general REDUNDANCY and so on…

This pipe is supposed to be a post. Decree was "DECREE: PUT FIRSTPOST ONG HEAD -- ongomome".

Why does lmjbot make a goatdecree?
lmjbot sees there are 40 posts on the page.
"my next post will be a mome post"
lmjbot makes an autogenerated decree.
lmjbot writes the post
"the last post is mine, I'll edit it instead of doubleposting"
lmjbot adds the new post to the old one.
The decree becomes a goat decree.

Problem is, the scarier looking features (which allow others to help you) have to be in "Powerful" mode, where you don't need them.

Balthacarius asked for a chair, then sat and thought. Finally he smiled, nodded to Mrorl (who hesitantly switched the Bard back on, and nodded in return when it had warmed up a bit), and said:
"Very well. Write me an Odeity, a Timeless poem of Time: an ottpoem of Cueganshipping, Sarcasm, Geology, and Language. With feeling, and a bittersweet e****, if need be, but in the true OTTish spirit."

Quite so. What I'm doing is RELATED, though, in the sense that it involves a lot of Waiting for it ("it", in this case, usually being vacuum systems or chemical processes). Unfortunately, Waiting isn't nearly as molpish if you have to do it in very many successive short (<100 mNP) bursts, in a cleanroom under harsh yellow light.

Different problem. She seems better this morning though, so perhaps all the molpish thoughts (and thoughtfully translated chant) helped.

On a scale of Sandcastle to Epilogue, she's probably at Civilization, so there's that. She's waited well, but I don't know how much more waiting there is for her.

One year ago, SilentTimer wrote:

*** STARTING THOUGHT TRANSMISSION FROM THE PAST ***

May 2014. April 13291.

You are a Beanish engineer.
Your comrades are asking you to build a tool to recover a corpse from a cave.

Why not just go in and fetch it?

Image If you enter the cave you pick up an illness which causes a slow, but certain death.
We have no idea why, but we suspect that the dust inside the cave has something to do with it.

What about wearing masks and gloves to protect you from the dust?
And cleaning your clothes after the operation?

I'm not sure that this will be enough. Maybe there's more than just the dust. I only know that two of us went into the cave for a short time and died. I stood in front of the entrance for some longer time and survived. But you're right: When we pull something out of the cave, some dust will come with it. Then it will be a good idea to wear masks and gloves.

You can use a fishing rod.

We can only stand on a small ledge and won't have the space to operate it precisely enough.
What kind of machine can you build to recover a corpse from a hazard area?
Spoiler:
Hmm… let's see …
We can use rope to build a crane.

Image

The anchor would have to be fixed at the opposite wall.
Can you throw it there?

I'm afraid we can't. Even if we had a master thrower among us, there's just nothing where the anchor can gain hold. As far as I could see from the entrance, the roof seems to consist of very smooth rock.

Then what about something like this?

Image

That's a nice toy, but it won't be strong enough
to pull a human corpse over a floor covered with debris.

OK, let's try something more sophisticated.

Image

You can power this robot by turning these cranks. Over this bendable chain of belts you can move the wheels and other parts of its “body”. We can even attach arms if you see a use for them.

That looks nice, but I'm afraid it's too sophisticated. Remember, if something goes wrong we cannot go in and repair it. We need something as robust as possible. Keep it simple.

Hmm…

*A moment of silence passes while the engineer is contemplating.*

The problem with a fishing rod is its length. You have to support its weight and to wind a loop dangling from the far end around a corpse lying on the floor – while standing on a narrow ledge. If we find a way to support the weight in the middle – a wheel, for example – this can be your pivot point for precise movements of the far end.

So the device is standing on its wheel, I'm holding it upright. I can move it forward and backward, and I can turn it to the sides, Image

Image

Sounds reasonable. But what if there is no way to the target the wheel can pass over?

We can make the rod extensible. You push the machine inside on the wheel as far as possible. From that point on you extend the forward part until you reach the target. This will even work in case the wheel gets stuck.

Excellent.
Now we need a mechanism to twine the rope around the target.

Hmm…

*Another moment of silence passes while the engineer is contemplating.*

We can guide the rope through two eyes attached to a second wheel, a horizontal one, at the front end. We use some gears and an extensible axle to connect it to a crank at the aft end, so you can turn it from there.

Image
(click on image for seaish version)

Another crank is for extending and retracting the rod.

Image

(Image The extensible axle ends in a sprocket which rotates the horizontal wheel. The cranks and the ropes are not drawn in this resolution. Instead, the device is rotated in high resolution, scaled down, darkened, and then the cranks and ropes are drawn to fit the scene.)

(Image When the device is lying flat on the floor, only the front wheel is visible.)

Image

(Image Now comes the evil part. Something must happen which turns the device inoperable. This event must block the wheel and the extending mechanism at the same time.)

(Image The device rolls over a stone. On the far side of the stone, the wheel falls down on a barrel, which gives way. At the same time the front part of the rod hits another stone and bends – just a little, but fusing the axles.)

Image
I like your tool. I'm confident that it will serve its purpose. Thank you! Image
