0305: "Rule 34"

Postby nyeguy » Mon Aug 20, 2007 4:04 am UTC

Image

Alt-text: "Okay, Lance. For entry into the college bowl, spell 'Throbbing'"

I have a feeling this is how strange porn always starts.

alt text, commentary, link, etc.

I hope I'm not the only one who instantly checked for wetriffs.com right after reading it. XD

Rule 34 deals with hentai, not porn.

Who wants to bet there will be hentai of all of these by the time the next comic comes out?

I know I'm not the only one to actually check to see if that was registered.

And if it wasn't... I'd have snatched it right up.

I missed my opportunity with colbertkilledapanda.com (I think it was that; might have been something else from TDS) and have regretted it since.

This one was pretty funny. Especially the alt-text. I assume it's a reference to Lance Bass.
Also: http://wetriffs.com/
I'd submit a picture if I could.

I thought the "if it exists, there is porn of it. No exceptions" thing was rule 36, not rule 34.

EDIT: it is, indeed, rule 34. Urbandictionary confirms ths. My bad. :)

I'm pretty sure it's rule 34. And rule 35 is if porn doesn't exist, * will make it.

so ofcourse like everyone I immediately went to check it out... but then I decided to google it aswell. Turns out that wetriffs has gone through some changes recently. The google cache shows a very different version of the site. It is an exact clone of the regular xkcd site detailing the future syndication of the series in newspapers and the like. The text is as follows, and as soon as I can get around to it I'll upload and add the image.

"Syndication Notice

* First
* Prev
* Archive
* Next
* Current

Last month, sometime after xkcd.com passed 150,000 daily readers, I got an email from United Features Syndicate. They've seen the explosive growth of online comics as an opportunity to reach a younger audience. Last year they began carrying a family-friendly version of Diesel Sweeties, and they told me they were interested in doing the same with xkcd. I considered this offer carefully, and in the end decided that the long-term stability of syndication trumped any concerns over artistic freedom. I accepted their offer, and I'm looking forward to working with them to bring xkcd to a wider audience.

That said, there are going to be a few changes to the comic. Obviously, with the rights signed over to UFS, it will no longer be published under Creative Commons, and all previous strips will be retroactively un-CC'd and relicensed under UFS terms. All online content will be protected via proprietary DRM. I also recieved a letter outlining topics and content that would be off-limits in the new xkcd. Prohibited content includes:

- Cultural references that would be lost on the average newspaper reader
- Mathematics above the high-school level
- Obscure scientific subjects
- Overt sexual material
- Objectionable words such as fuck, shit, cunt, ass, tits, cock, scrotum, bitch, Belgium, pussy, or twat
- Same-sex relationships
- Star Wars
- Star Trek (Original Series and Enterprise)
- The home phone numbers of White House employees
- Bacon-based currencies
- Erotic use of flywheels
- Exposés regarding other United Features syndicated characters
- Exposés regarding the personal lives of United Features Syndicate executives, specifically including CEO Kenneth Lowe
- Teledildonics
- Portrayals of Johnny Cash as an Amway distributor
- Any story that ends with "and that's how my penis got the nickname 'grappling hook'."
- Computer-computer cybersex
- Swordfights between white people
- Bitch & Animal
- Sexualization of Mt. Rushmore
- Staplers as mélée weapons
- Road trip buddy comedies starring Tank Girl and William Howard Taft
- Eric S. Raymond performing in Cirque du Soleil
- Hats with buckles
- Licking of nipples atop a moving train

I'm looking forward to the future! Oh, and here's a free preview of the new xkcd!"

Is wetriffs not 100% coded/debugged yet, or did that upload just go much faster than I expected and pictures are moderated?

mmmm. runon.

I don't think that's true.

I think that the problem here is a confusion of terms. Rule 34 tends to be fulfilled with drawn or cartoon porn (which can include hentai, but not necessarily), mainly because those seeking rule 34 material and those able to supply it don't tend to be those able to hire hot women to actually do it -- and because most rule 34 comes from existing cartoons, TV shows, and the like, things that couldn't be well-imitated by real-life models because that would just be cosplay.

And that guitar fantasy actually does sound pretty hot...

But I think that this comic gets rule 34 slightly wrong. Rule 34 isn't that porn exists of all that can be imagined -- it's that porn exists of something that already exists. Thomas the Tank Engine can be 34'd, because it's an existing media -- but the other examples in the comic are more fantasies, things that would be covered by /r/ (request) boards, not rule 34, because it's not something existing that can be converted into porn. Rule 34 also often involves converting cherished childhood memories into porn.

My assumption was that it would be moderated.

I've just wondered what content would be allowed.

radiantthought, that was the April Fool's Day issue of XKCD too.

quote ended because copying it in its entirety would be obnoxious for everyone

this could be funny, except that it somehow reminds me of Bill Watterson.

You guys are making this far more complicated than it really is.
The rule is "If it exists, there's porn of it."
It has nothing to do with drawn porn/hentai/whateverthefuckelse. It's just plain and simple: there is porn of it.

Good point.

If no one objects, I declare this thread to be a brainstorming session for unusual (and slightly geeky) fantasies. Something in the vein of those young topless women with equations on their backs (that will forever be hot!).

Hmm... I wonder if there's any female blacksmith porn? ;)

Ok, more importantly than the domain, who instantly thought "Dream Girl" (number 5, or whatever Randall is on).

A dumbed down version of XKCD for newspapers sounds miserable. Although the dieselsweeties syndicated comics are hilarious.
