1241: "Annoying Ringtone Champion"

It beat out "Clock radio alarm", "B-flat at 194 decibels", "That noise from Dumb & Dumber", and "Recording of a sobbing voice begging you to answer".

Saw the title first: honestly thought it'd be the Brown Noise.

Hmm, my money was on '8-year old boy making popping sound with finger in mouth.'

I'd go with "antagonistic co-worker slurping coffee in neighboring cubicle," but it's just too real.

How is it annoying? I thought people over the age of 30 couldn't even hear it.

Does anyone have a link to a sound bite like that? Now I need to make this my new ringtone!

Who even created that alarm clock beep? Since it's meant to be jarring and off-putting, they did a very good job.
A ringer which changes pitch and volume while ringing, in such a way that it's impossible to judge where you left your phone, would be interesting.

With a good speaker, 194 dB would require 21,000,000,000 watts. That's 10 times more power than you need for a flux capacitor.

Unless you managed to make it stereophonic by having an array of speakers on your phone and some sophisticated DSP to target peoples ears, the mosquito ringtone wouldn't work. As it would be audible to both ears, your brain wouldn't be tricked into thinking something flew close to your head.

My choice for annoying people would be Brownian noise. It just overpowers all other sound in the vicinity and is difficult to locate. If you didn't immediately react to your phone making the sound in your pocket, it's feasible you could annoy people for weeks before they figured out the source.

My sister used "arrow striking into wood" as a incoming SMS ringtone... but had to change it because it was annoying to others.

I used to have Arrow Striking the Trusty Servant - "Message for you, Sir" for incoming texts.

I'm surprised no-ones brought up the Crazy Frog yet, that was ridiculously popular and yet stupidly annoying all at the same time, so when you got away from one fool who had it, you were bound to run into another... at least it seems to have died a death more than 5 years ago now (though as with all things, it'll make a comeback when kids these days realise what they were missing out on).

Not to mention the brown noise.

Hey, me too! Then I switched it for: "*fanfare* More bad news" from Duck Soup by MArx Brothers.

Anyway, my ringtone is the one from Brazil. Not a serious contender, but annoying nontheless =P

If you've seen The IT Crowd you might remember the ringtone Moss used. It can be amusing. Especially if used for text notifications when you are on call.

To me this is the most annoying ringtone, because I've seen people use it:

"I've Got a Friend Ringtone"

Ouch!

Really I would have gone for the sound TVs make when they are turned on (mostly with sound turned off), although it doesn't work on those newfangled tubeless screens so it may have been long forgotten.

Or maybe the sound blackboards make when written on (whiteboard squishes are also annoying, but to a lesser extend).

The mosquito sound is mostly annoying because you mostly hear it when you want to sleep, which is made difficult due to the noise. It's not as annoying during daytime/evenings.

"B-flat at 194 decibels"

I wonder how many people in this thread were aware B-flat makes alligators horny. (ask Penn and Teller, I'm not making this up)

I could see how having B-flat at 194 decibels for a ringtone could be a problem.

I have on my phone the least annoying ringtone in the world: three seconds of complete silence, created by me and assigned to a particular telemarketer whose calls I not only don't want to answer, but I don't even want to have to look at the phone to see that it's the telemarketer.

This is on the same phone where I have the ringtone I've always wanted, because (a) it's loud enough to hear on the freeway with the car windows down, (b) a song I really like, and (c) unlikely to match the ring of any other phone around me (don't you hate it when "Für Elise" plays in a meeting and sixteen people all simultaneously reach for their phones?). That would be the first three lines of the song "狠狠愛" by Vivian Hsu. (Also on the same phone, the full music video for the same song, in case I feel a need for a little T&A.)

Not to mention you really wouldn't percieve this as a sound, more like awful pain of your ear being torn apart. Oh, and that's probably the last thing you'd "hear" in your life.

Recently, the mosquito device has become popular as a means of driving off teenagers. Teenagers have responded by recording the sound as a ringtone that most adults cannot hear.
Personally, I'm nearly 30 and the things cause a headache after a short period of time.

A special type of alarm: the cloister bell from Doctor Who. Who cares about Daleks, Cyberman or anything else? The TARDIS is about to explode!

The one I hate most is The Nokia Tune. Second is that "hello-Moto" thing.

Coming to think of it, maybe what I hate is people who cant config their devices away from defaults.

For a short while I used a recording of the actual Gran Vals as my ringtone. It was a self-challenge to pick up calls within the first 20 seconds or so, before it gets to THAT phrase.

I put this as my ring tone (just the first 34 seconds), and I feel really clever whenever it plays:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2SKW9ttNwc
(∫|p|2)(∫|q|2) ≥ (∫|pq|)2
Thanks, skeptical scientist, for knowing symbols and giving them to me.

So close! I have the TARDIS engines as my text alert sound. Guaranteed to get a "What the hell was that?" out of people.

(BTW, why isn't there a link to the xkcd forums on the main page?)

31 years old and can still hear it. I'm ahead of the game. Aaalright!

Also, we have one of those new tennnis racket looking bug swaters that zaps the bugs. I can hear a high pitched tone whenever you push the button. No one else, except my 4 year old son, can hear it. They think I am making it up and that my son is just copying me, pretending to hear it. There so too is a high pitched tone. "What's that sound? You hear it? It's a funny squeaky sound."

I'm 50 and can still hear sounds in the higher freq.s. I haven't been married, so that could have something to do with it.

My phone doesn't have a ring tone, it has a voice reading out the name/number of who is calling. That way I can ignore some people without even having to look at the phone.

40+, and hearing those "silent" rat repeller devices, but only from particular angles.

For a few months, my ring tone has been the one from Kim possible. It's simple, polyphonic and most importantly, not annoying. Also, I get to say "what's the sitch?" Whenever I get a text.

There is one ringtone that should at least be in the running...
Having become a Wizard on n.p. 2183, the Yellow Piggy retroactively appointed his honorable self a Temporal Wizardly Piggy on n.p.1488, not to be effective until n.p. 2183, thereby avoiding a partial temporal paradox. Since he couldn't afford two philosophical PhDs to rule on the title.

Most annoying ringtone if you're driving and can't reach the phone...

To be intoned with childlike innocence every three seconds or so:

"Are we there yet?"
