1350: "Lorenz"

Postby nickjbor » Tue Apr 01, 2014 2:36 pm UTC

Image
uploaded image of comic at start
link to comic: http://xkcd.com/1350/ (non image)
hidden text: Every choice, no matter how small, begins a new story.

This is the image that is actually linked to in the source code:
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/shouldnt_be_hard.png
This is the previous comic.

I came here to read the thread to see what was up with the comic today; only to find there is none :P

BTW, in case this was not clear, this comic is interactive!

If anyone knows a better way to get the image, as opposed to be uploading it to my own imgur, please let me know as I don't feel comfortable with such a possible copyright violation

Sometimes I click an option, but no text appears in the box. A bug?

I think he's actively working behind the scenes on it. If you submit something interesting, he adds it as a future/additional option to the comic!

I do not see any options, just the image for "Shouldn't Be Hard" and a large white space underneath. I am using IE9, though, so not all that surprised.

Here's an example, I clicked a text option for the second debater to say, but it came up blank:

Dang. With Chrome it works; if it's not working 100% for either firefox or IE it would explain why nobody else started the thread before I did!

It's borked on Chrome on OSX 10.8.5, it shows the "Shouldn't Be Hard" PNG, with a big white space under it.

Seems to be fine in Safari however.

It's working for me in firefox, though a little slow. That may be normal, though...

What a great comic! Randall never ceases to impress. Got his work cut out for him if he really is adding to it based on suggestions. I look forward to seeing this all collected and catalogued like Umwelt was.

Hmm... yeah, it seems the text doesn't get shown in the second row of pictures. Also, another comic which doesn't display on uni.xkcd.com =(

I had to disable Ghostery for the Google AJAX api to get it to work, but it didn't fully kick in until the fix suggested above.

Going back and then forward again starts a new story, so, this looks like it might take a while to catalog

Before I realized it was interactive, I thought it was funnier. I read it as someone trying these things in order ending with trying to install BSD after which there is no more comic because he couldn't get it installed.

Every frame I've encountered that has two lines of dialogue causes the story to end on the second line, and any attempt to input a response causes the text to overlap. Seems to be a bug.

The first time I posted in the forum it was about Time.
I then stopped posting for a while.
Now I'm back for this, since it has the potential to become the Second True Comic.
(and considering the Madness, I could even get a new title... "Double Cardinal" maybe?)

Very interesting. This should be fun to check out later, as more suggestions come in.

I typed in a suggestion, and then later found it as an option on a different panel! It all seems a little random at the moment. Chaotic, even...

This is truly incredible. However, it just stopped working for me.

I got to the point where the guy asks if there should be a crossroad there. Then I realized that the panels are largely white space. Made me think it was turning into this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298482/

Are the scenarios being organically developed by user submissions or something?

Aha. Thank you, xkcd forum!

(Is it intentional torture that wacky word replacement day on the forum coincides with massively interesting comic occurrences? This played havok with the "Time" thread last year. And... my goodness, that thread is still running? Amazing.)

Edit: I keep coming across "suggest a line", so I suppose if I try to see all the possible paths now I'll just have to come back and do it again later once more options are added. Conclusion: screw it, I'll do it later. A lot of the paths abruptly end in "suggest a line" too, so this is unfulfilling.

Some of the links people are leaving aren't working for me, they just create the first panel but with no text or options. I'm starting to see the meaning of "Lorenz" though, of the links here that work, two of them show the character waking up and looping back to the first panel, which falls in line with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenz_system
"notable for having chaotic solutions for certain parameter values and initial conditions. In particular, the Lorenz attractor is a set of chaotic solutions of the Lorenz system which, when plotted, resemble a butterfly or figure eight."
and an animation of a dot traveling around in the figure eight loop.

On another tangent, after seeing the Dinosaur Comics T-Rex popping up, I decided to go look over there
http://www.qwantz.com/index.php
It's webcomics cameo day there, including our local stick figures, a few others I read, and several I don't recognize.

So you really think the Lorenz comic is somehow chaotic? Weird. I think it has the potential to become another cult comic similar to "Time", develop its own subculture, cause war and peace and eventually have babies named after it. These are the days I like most.

I think Randall was saving it for April's Fools' day, other than that it's a coincidence.

Also, the Time thread has been going for over a year now, so obviously it has coincided with every single annual event. Twice even with some.
