Unless I misunderstood what they just said on the stream, they have not managed to harpoon the comet, or at least have not confirmed that harpooning a comet is possible...?

XKCD has updated to state that we don't know if harpoons work on a comet, so I guess we can trust the ESA stream. ;)

I thought they said that the anchors didn't work which I took to mean the screws on the feet, so my understanding is that the harpoons are all that's keeping the lander on the surface right now. I could well be wrong though, I guess we'll know more soon enough.

Just now, a different group in a different control room reported that "the harpoons have been fired and rewound, and the landing gear is inside, and we are sitting on the surface."

Sounds like they are moored and tied down.

That sounds a lot better than "they didn't fire, and we might try firing them again later" from the earlier report. (Mental picture of firing them actually pushing the lander off from the surface)

I wonder how many frames Randall has drawn for this. How many possibilities of outcomes? Guess we'll never get to see the ones he drew for the outcomes that didn't happen!

Oh my RandallGod, this thread is so hard to catch, especially when one tries to watch the livestream at the same time... It's like the OTT at its busiest times.

Anyway, congrats to ESA!
