Title: “Shoot, it landed in the golf course. Gonna be hard to get it down the--oh, never mind, it rolled onto the ice hazard. Face-off!”

Where’s Calvin when you need him?

Metaball seems to be only a more marketable subset of Calvinball.

The main problem is that the playing field is 2 km2. You gotta have at least a golf course, a race track and a paintball area. These surface areas add up you know.

I was thinking why is it titled "Meatball". Maybe they ate it at last.

The ordinary metaball variety bores me now it is mainstream. I only play the multiball variety.

I read the last panel (on my phone) as "The ball clipped the corner of the baseball zone infield fly rule" (one sentence). I assumed that they were playing a game in a space inhabited by the rules themselves, which fitted well with the "meta-" prefix. However, I couldn't make the title text work with this. The game as depicted doesn't seem particularly meta, it's more a union or composite of the different games.

Then I started thinking about the space created by the rules of a ball game; it's something like the product of the 4D spacetimes for each player, the one for the ball, and a load of extra dimensions defining the degrees of freedom with which players can move limbs etc. Within this space are dynamically varying regions which are allowed and forbidden; the forbidden region is divided into areas that will result in different types of sanction for different teams. Then there's a much higher- (i.e. infinite-) order space in which each possible game is a single point; this space contains regions that are legal and illegal; the legal area is divided into regions labelled with the corresponding final score. Perhaps metaball ought to be a ballgame played in one of these spaces.

I dunno... I've never metaball I didn't like.

Metaball implies the rules change and are part of the game. It did not seem to be and I would just call it Chimeraball.

Calvinball was way more "meta".

More specifically, metaball wouldn't include actually playing ball.

I feel like I want to play a more manageable version of this on a baseball field (kick ball), with soccer nets in the outfield, and portable basketball hoops somewhere in foul territory. Scoring works the same as whatever sport that you scored on. As soon as the ball crosses a painted line, the rules switch to the new sport (If you kick it into the outfield, you better have players out there to defend your goal!).

I feel like there is room for another sport on the other foul line, but I don't know what else would be feasible.

Metaballs look like they get more complicated the more balls you have, though physically rewarding.

My thought exactly!

And anyway, this might be the exact opposite of A game from 1975 .
E.g., "NYC Coach: I don't want another man on that track. Houston, what are you trying to do? Nobody's gonna win this game?
Rusty, Team Executive: Game? This wasn't meant to be a game. NEVER."

Only two square kilometers? Pfff, small fry stuff.

These archaic forms of football, typically classified as mob football, would be played between neighbouring towns and villages, involving an unlimited number of players on opposing teams, who would clash in a heaving mass of people struggling to drag an inflated pig's bladder by any means possible to markers at each end of a town. By some accounts, in some such events any means could be used to move the ball towards the goal, as long as it did not lead to manslaughter or murder. Sometimes instead of markers, the teams would attempt to kick the bladder into the balcony of the opponents' church. A legend that these games in England evolved from a more ancient and bloody ritual of kicking the "Dane's head" is unlikely to be true. These antiquated games went into sharp decline in the 19th century when the Highway Act 1835 was passed banning the playing of football on public highways.

So: make it at least a golf course, a race track and a paintball area, two major roads, a couple of churches, and five hundred per team ...THEN we're talking.

I think Disney World in Florida would make a good venue. 110 km2, and it definitely has the facilities. One goal on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster in Magic Kingdom, the other in the tiger enclosure in the Animal Kingdom (so there's your Hobbes connection).

I was at some point trying to find a way to have two people play chess and GO respectively, each following their own rules.

Bowling?

Or possibly field goals from American Football.

OK, I think I get it now. There are different zones in which the rules of different games apply, so part of the tactics might involve aiming for a different zone; in other words to some extent part of playing the game is choosing which game to play, or attempting to make to rules change by forcing play into a particular zone. That is kind of meta, although there are elements of it in most sports: e.g. different rules apply in the penalty area of football, inside the "22" in rugby, and in the "D" of basketball. This goes beyond that, thought it's not clear quite how. Would changing from one zone to another involve changing the actual aim of the game, such that at the final whistle only the score in the currently active zone would matter? Or would all the baskets, runs and goals be added up in some weighted manner?

Better find a way to work this into the game, too.

I gave up trying to invent absurd sports after describing "cross-country bowling" only to learn from a Michael Palin travel documentary that the Irish already had it.

Thought Mr. Munroe may have grown up in Florida like me, but no mention of it in his 'about' page. In junior high, we played a game called "Gatorball" in PE class, which was a combination of soccer, basketball and touch football. Ever try to dribble a soccer ball in the sand while trying to avoid getting tackled? (I could post a link for it if you don't believe me, but it gets flagged as 'spam').

Thank you Randall. I was in a bad mood due to an email I got a couple of days ago. You fixed that. As to adding a sport, how about polo?

Little disappointed in the Metaball strip. Would have thought it would have something to do with Italian American cuisine. Guess I was chasing the pun a little too hard.

You know they are using a soccer ball so in "Metaball" is their a title does not dictate behavior rule so that the the type of ball used does not dictate the rules of the game played?
